Katie continued gazing at the basket Nick was busy unpacking, watching as each neatly wrapped sandwich was placed on the blanket, followed by the drinks. She was just about to pause to grab herself a ham and cheese sandwich with grape soda, but was suddenly caught off guard by the surprise Nick was holding inside for them later. Her eyes grew wider just by the mention of the word chocolate, her mouth in the shape of an O. "Are you serious? Chocolate...chocolate cake?" she could barely get the words out properly without her having her mouth start watering from just the image of the chocolatey goodness. She bit her lip lightly then, going back to grab her sandwich and drink, but holding off a bit from unwrapping the food to say one more thing. "Chocolate is my weakness." she said a bit too casually, but still holding up a smile to Nick.

Nick chuckled at her reaction to the chocolate cake. He couldn't help it; she was just so adorable. She reminded him a little of his younger sister when she was younger and their parents would take them out for ice cream. She would always act like she had just witnessed a man landing on the moon or some other major event instead of simply being informed that she was getting ice cream. "Yeah, I'm dead serious," he said, holding up the wrapped slices of cake. "It was my birthday cake. My mom wanted to have this family thing with a cake and stuff, so we kind of had a little party before I left to pick you up." He took a bite of his sandwich and smiled at her explanation about chocolate being her weakness. "Good to know. Are there any other weaknesses I should know about? Or things that make you smile?"

Katie managed to take a bite out of her sandwich as well as a small sip of her drink while listening to Nick's explanation of the chocolate cake. Her eyes widened slightly when he mentioned it was his birthday then. "Wait.." she swallowed her bite of sandwich before continuing, "Your birthday cake? Is your birthday today, or...or was it yesterday or something?" she couldn't help but wonder. Not like she usually cared for others birthdays besides herself or even her son's, but she was still curious to know. Then she couldn't help but giggle a bit at his question about her having any other weaknesses. "Well..." she thought out loud, "I don't know about weaknesses...but things that make me smile....Um..that's kind of a tricky one." she giggled. "I guess you'll have to find that one out on your own..." she winked, but quickly added in, "but I'll give you hint. I love to be spoiled in whatever way possible. That'll sure to get me to smile. Even a kiss will do, even." she offered another wink to him, while sipping on her drink some more.

Nick laughed before taking a sip of juice to wash down his sandwich. "Yeah, my birthday's today," he said, finishing off the first half of his sandwich. "I'm eighteen now." He had thought that he had mentioned it when he had asked her out, but he had probably forgotten to do so. It was also possible that she had just forgotten about his birthday herself. He couldn't blame her for doing so; after all, she had two kids and other responsibilities to deal with. Her explanation about her weaknesses made him blush a little. Does she want me to kiss her right now? After thinking it over and glancing at her, he figured that now would probably be a bad time. She was in the middle of drinking a juice box and it would be lame for him to ask her to put it down just so that he could kiss her. If he suddenly leaned in and did it, she might get startled and spill it all over her shirt and would more than likely kill him. Not to mention, this would be the second time in his entire life that he had ever kissed a girl, which made it even more complicated. If there was a chance that this date would go well, it would be better idea to wait until the end in case he screwed up the kiss. "That's also good to know," he finally replied, as he picked up the second half of his sandwich.

"No kidding." Katie chuckled lightly, taking another bite of her sandwich before continuing. So today was his birthday. Well, that just proved that Katie was older, but just by a couple months though. She didn't mind being older than him or anything, it was just nice to know more about him, like when his birthday is, or how much older or younger he is to her. She grinned wider then at his last reply. She just hoped that he would get the hint soon enough. She had to admit though, Nick didn't seem to know much about being in a relationship, or what girls like. In her opinion, he was brand new at this. Has he even kissed a girl before? She had the urge to ask, but stopped herself knowing that would be too personal. She was curious though, even when you looked in her eyes as she slurped her juice some more, she was curious to know more about this boy in front of her. "So what about you? What are things that make you smile?" she finally asked, letting out her curiosity. "Since I've been telling you about myself, its only fair for me to know more about you, right?" she laughed lightly.

Nick bit into his sandwich and thought long and hard. "Would you believe me if I told you that sitting here with you right now is something that makes me smile?" he finally asked, smiling back at her to prove his point. He knew that it sounded like a lame pick-up line, but it was the honest truth. "Let's see....what else? Well you know by now that Spaceballs makes me smile. A lot of other funny movies make me laugh and smile. Extreme sports make me smile, even though I've gotten hurt a million times. My family makes me smile sometimes. Eating certain foods makes me happy. Ummmm.....I guess that's about it. I'll let you know if I can think of anything else." After eating the rest of his sandwich, he wiped his mouth and folded his hands on his lap. "Feel free to ask me anything else. I'm pretty much an open book."

Katie couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at him. Sure it did sound pretty lame, but at the same time, she could tell when a guy really liked her and really did try to impress her. And that was exactly what Nick was trying to do. "Oh, really now?" she grinned, giving him a little smirk after taking a bite out of her sandwich. "Well, it seems like it shouldn't be too hard to make you smile then, huh?" she giggled, sipping at her juice next, followed by eating the rest of her sandwich after him. "But like you said, I'll let you know if any questions come up in my head to ask you. But then again, most of the things you said can usually make me smile too." She finished her juice after her sandwich was gone then, and her eyes started inching closer towards the chocolate dessert. "So.....dessert time?" she asked with a chuckle.

Nick grinned and nodded his head. "Nope, it's not too difficult to make me smile. I guess that's why I'm so easy to get along with. I have a sister that's difficult to get along with. She hardly ever smiles. Life would be so much easier if people just smiled more at one another." Great, now you sound like a stupid greeting card...... Still smiling, he picked up the two pieces of cake and handed one of them to her. "So tell me something, Katie," he said as he unwrapped the piece of cake and lifted it to his lips. "Is sitting here with me actually making you smile or are you just excited for the chocolate cake?"

Katie laughed a bit more at his response. Especially about his sister he brought up. "Yeah, some people say that I hardly ever smile. Er, well used to anyway." she shrugged, "I guess I did used to be the mean girl type. Always trying to take advantage of other people." she bit her lip lightly then, realizing what she was telling Nick. She didn't want him to take her the wrong way all of a sudden. And on the first date. She was glad though when the subject was changed and Nick handed her a piece of cake. "Mmm..." she licked her lips, unwrapping the chocolatey goodness, before grabbing one of the plastic forks and taking her first bite of the dessert. She looked up to him when he called her name then, swallowing before replying back anything. "Well.." she licked her lips, "At first, it was the chocolate cake. But now that I've gotten to know you. I'm starting to think that maybe its you making me smile." she laughed, enjoying the tease she got out of her answer, and took another bite of cake.

After taking two huge bites of cake, Nick wiped his mouth and glanced over at Katie. "Really?" he asked, a surprised grin on his face. "Well, I'm glad that's it's me. Because you'd be bored to death as soon as we finished eating this cake. Then I'd have to take you home, which would officially make this one of the shortest dates that I've ever been on in my life." He chuckled a little before returning to a more serious expression. "I was always that dorky kid that pretty much kept to myself. You would have probably hated me if you had met me in tenth grade. I'm sure of it." He breathed a sigh of relief at the fact that he had met her now instead of then. "I talked and participated in some activities, but I was known mostly because of my siblings. I was pretty much known as Jack, Hayden, Brandie, or Kylie's brother, or whichever one of my siblings happened to be popular at the time."

Katie continued munching small bites of her cake while he started talking again, laughing a little here and there, and just plain enjoying herself in his company. She wiped her mouth off with her napkin again, before replying back to him with a curious expression. "Really now? Well then, I sure am glad I didn't meet you back then." she took a sip of what was left of her drink, slurping it down to the bottom. "Because honestly, I probably would of been one of the girls picking on or messing with you." she shrugged her shoulders, digging in on her cake again, swallowing another piece before adding in, "It's weird. Back in high school, I mean, early in high school, I wasn't the..." she paused a moment, trying to figure out the right word to say, "right girl to mess with. I took advantage of people...went partying, snuck alcohol around. But then...when I had Kyle and Connor. I guess I sort of...changed." Katie bit her lip, keeping her gaze on Nick wondering how he was going to respond to all that. Maybe she wasn't the right girl to be with him. Not yet anyway.

Nick's eyebrow arched up a little as Katie described the way that she used to be. He was nowhere near her level when he was a sophomore. In fact, he was hardly even near it now. "Yeah, you probably would have liked my brother Hayden. He was the cool guy, the one that always got all the girls." Especially the ones that I wanted.... He could just picture her coming over to his house after school with all of Hayden's other groupies, listening to his band rehearse and thinking that he was singing directly to her. Considering the amount of partying and drinking that Hayden did, he would have loved Katie. He would have probably snuck out with her late at night to some bar and then snuck her back into his bedroom to do God-knows-what. Katie would have probably been one of those girls that hid in Hayden's bedroom closet or under the bed. Yeah, she would have probably gone with a wild rock star like Hayden and not a quiet, shy person like him. He reached out and squeezed her hand when she mentioned her boys. "They're adorable," he said with a smile. Hayden would have probably disappeared into thin air at the very sight of them. It was yet another example of just how different Nick was from Hayden.

"Yeah, I probably would have." Katie laughed, giving out a small smirk over her lips. Despite how much 'fun' her past might have been though, Katie wouldn't think to change back to that unhappy girl. The girl who got drunk nearly every night; the girl who nearly flunked out of school for ditching so many classes; the girl who had taken after her uninspiring mother who left her when she was just a mere infant. The more Katie thought about it, the more she was actually glad for what she was finally becoming. Maybe becoming a mother was a way of telling her to grow up. It was possible. As soon as Nick grabbed her hand then, and spoke those endearing words to her, she could of sworn she felt her heart soften up even more so than ever before. "Thanks." she smiled warmly, and squeezed his hand back in return. "And...as much trouble as they can be, they're, also part of the reason why I've changed so much over the years," she gave him a toothy grin, "And I love them for that."

Still squeezing her hand tightly, Nick thought back over what Katie just said. Between Mabtown and Riverside, he had seen tons of girls around his age that were pregnant. Most of them were either engaged or had a boyfriend. In fact, the only he knew of that was pretty much alone was his cousin Emma, who had gotten pregnant as a result of something random that had happened at a party one night. She had been out of town during the entire pregnancy and it was a huge shock to his family when she had shown up for Christmas one year with a daughter not much older than his half sister Molly. There was little to no mention made of her daughter's father. Most of what she did say about him involved quite a few four letter words. He wondered about Katie's pregnancy. Did she have to go through it alone or was the father around? And if he was, where the hell was he now? He didn't want to bring it up now; it wasn't the right time, but he was already starting to harbor a lot of pent-up rage towards someone that he'd never even met. "I'm sure they love you too," he said, still smiling at her. "And even though I didn't get the chance to meet the old Katie, I must say that I really like the current Katie a lot."

Katie smiled a bit wider at Nick, tightening her own grip on his hand as well. "Thanks." she said simply, leaning in closer to kiss him on the lips again. "And, honestly, if you have met the old Katie. I can guarantee you that you wouldn't be with me here today." she shrugged her shoulders slightly with a giggle.
