Jude walked off stage ready to watch the next band start their set. They were already putting the other band's equipment on stage and preparing for their soundcheck. He looked over at his friends who were already headed back to the green room to take a break while the other band set up, he knew why. There was an all girl band back there who his two guy friends had been eyeing earlier. He wasn't really interested. He'd rather watch the next band play than flirt with a bunch of local wannabes. He didn't really understand why they were even in this town really. They'd used to play in big places, with great bands. Why had they fallen off the face of the earth?
He sighed and decided to go outside and light up while this band got ready to play. He got out his box of Marlboro 27's and his red lighter. Putting one between his lips, he lit up and took a deep breath in, inhaling the smoke and the sweet caramel taste that the cigarette offered him. It was kind of chilly out, so it was a good thing he'd decided to put on his black North Face jacket after their set was over with.

Azalia stood outside the Venue, tying her short black hair into a messy bun. She'd debated whether or not she wanted to go in there, opting instead to wait and listen to the bands from outside. Some of them were okay, and others made her ears bleed. She sighed, walking around to sit on a nearby beach, pulling her guitar onto her lap and strumming a few chords.
She pulled her leather jacket on a bit tighter and pulled her phone out of her pocket, checking the time. Her mom would probably wonder where she was, not that it mattered. She was used to Azalia staying out all night, returning the next morning. She looked down, a few tendrils of hair falling in her eyes as she strummed the guitar again and began playing one of her favorite songs, humming along to it softly.

Jude heard a guitar being played and glanced over. He raised a brow. Really? he thought, Bringing her own guitar to a music venue? Why come if you aren't going to listen to the bands play? The whole thing seemed ridiculous to him, but still, the girl was doing pretty good, and he liked that song. He let out a sigh and sat down on the pavement, not watching the girl anymore, but listening as he laid back with his feet propped up, taking another drag of his cigarette. He wasn't the type to talk to people he didn't know. Just because a girl was playing pretty guitar wasn't going to change his mind.

Azalia continued playing and singing, her eyes closed as she lost herself in the music. That is, until her fingers stummbled over a part in the song. She stopped abruptly, opening her eyes with a frown. She tried to play that part again, only to mess it up. "Fuck." She muttered, setting her guitar down angrily. She gave a soft huff, knowing that getting angry was childish of her. Not that she cared. She had practiced that song so many times, and yet she still couldn't play that one part. It made her upset and she was going to pout.
Glancing to her side, she noticed a boy sitting on the ground, smoking. She scrunched up her nose. She would do a lot of things, drink, party, even get a tattoo, but smoking was not one of them. She found it digusting. She looked away, once she realized she was staring and glanced at the guitar sitting next to her, crossing her arms and slouching on the bench.

As she screwed up the song twice he smirked, he didn't really think it was funny that she was messing up. He thought it was funny that she was getting so pissed about it. He let the time pass a little before he said anything. She huffed again, though and he couldn't help it. His typical 'don't say anything unless they ask you something' rule wasn't going to fly here. He had to say something. "The bridge goes A, E minor, G, C. It's different than the rest of the song. There's an extra chord." He opened his eyes and looked over at her as he took another suck off of his cigarette. "In case you wanted to know. That's why you're screwing it up. Whatever site you got that off of probably didn't tell you that."

Azalia looked over at the boy who spoke and frowned. "I don't learn by reading." She said as she picked up her guitar. "I learn by ear." She slowly plucked at the chords he'd said, grinning when she finally got it right. So very different from the pout she had been wearing just a few minutes ago. She finished the song and placed the guitar next to her, clearly satisfied. She would have to be more careful to remember that part next time she played. "Thanks." She said then, crossing her ankles, causing the heel to click on the ground. "You know this song?"

Jude closed his eyes again and took a drag from his smoke. "Well maybe next time you should listen more carefully," he said arrogantly, not sure he believed that she was playing by ear. He let out a sigh and nodded at her thanks. He wasn't the most humble person in the world, actually, he was far from it. He didn't really care what anyone thought of him, which is probably why it's good that he actually had friends. He guessed they only liked him because of the way he played guitar. "Yeah, I know that song. I know the guy that wrote that song. We went on tour with his band."

Azalia frowned, crossing her arms. "I was listening carefully. It's called making a mistake. You know? Humans tend to make them all the time. Nobody's perfect." She wasn't quite sure if she liked this guy, he seemed so indifferent, it was a bit annoying. Not that she was any better, with her bi-polar tendencies. But he didn't have to talk to her like she was a child or something. She didn't say anything about his going to tour with the band. She would only admit to herself that she was a little jealous, they were her favorite band after all. She refused, however, to give him the satisfaction of knowing that.

Actually, Jude probably wouldn't have cared if she'd said it was her favorite band. The fact was, he probably would've just said 'Oh, that's cool. They're pretty fun guys.' He didn't usually take an interest in other people but, he couldn't help but smirk as she got angry with his statement. "You know, you should probably learn to take criticism. That's the best quality of any musician, the ability to take criticism and use it to make yourself better. Maybe instead of just playing by ear, next time you should do the ear thing and look it up, just to make sure you're right." He didn't know why he was telling her that, it wasn't like him to give a shit about whether anyone could play their or not. Being both a drummer and a guitarist, he typically didn't listen to what everyone said about him, but if there was anything good about him it was that he took criticism and improved on it. If someone said his playing sounded too rough, he toned it down. That was really the only thing he cared about, whether people liked his music or not.

"I know how to take criticism. I just have a bad time showing it." She muttered under her breath. But he was just telling her the same thing her family told her. Even though she was usually good at learning songs, they still told her she needed sheet music too, just to be sure. But her pride got in the way and she refused to listen to them. She sighed, fingering her guitar. He was right though, she did need to start looking up the sheet music. "If only I could read it." She said softly.

Jude opened his eye and looked at her before he laughed, almost way to loud and she would probably be offended. "Seriously? You know the sheet music for guitar is really simple? It just has the letter chord over the words. Piano sheet music is difficult, but guitar? Simple as fuck." He sat up and took another drag off of his cigarette. "Although it's pretty easy to learn to read piano sheet music too, just takes a little time to get used to." He shrugged and looked at her. "So, did you come here to sit outside the venue and play your own guitar while other bands work their asses off to put on a good show here?"

"I don't know how to read music in general. Get off my case." Azalia snapped. She crossed her arms again, the frown returning to her face. "I came here to get away from stupid people." She said in reply. "My mom made us all leave the house and the only thing I had with me is my guitar. I came here because I heard there was good music. I just didn't feel like going inside." She rose an eyebrow, leaning forward a bit. "Why? Is sitting here with my guitar a crime?"

Jude raised his arms up with his palms out in surrender. "Whoa, whoa, no harm done, I was just trying to give you some help. If you don't want advice from someone who's been around, then fine, I'll just go back inside and wait for the next band to play their set." He stood up as she started to bark at him for asking about her guitar. He shrugged, "I guess it's not a crime, but I wouldn't exactly call it polite. I mean, I was just playing my ass off in there for people like you, trying to put on a good show and you were probably just sitting out here the whole time. If you ask me, it probably should be a crime. He dropped his cigarette on the ground and put it out with his shoe.

"I can hear perfectly fine out here." Azalia said. "I don't see why I would need to go inside to listen. Besides, it's not like I was playing my guitar while I was listening. I do have a little respect for people." She resisted the urge to roll her eyes and sat back against the bench, looking away from him. In all honesty, she had no idea why she was still sitting here talking to this guy. If it were any other time she would've gotten up and left already.

Jude shrugged and looked up at the sky which was growing dark at this time. "Yeah, well, there's more to a show than just listening to the music. We like it when people listen, but bands also like it when people watch and cheer. It lets us know that people still care that we're playing and doing shows for them. If everyone just sat outside there'd be no reason to put on a show in the first place." He didn't look at her, but instead got his lighter out and started playing with it. He sighed softly and looked at her, figuring if he wanted her to listen to anything at this venue ever again, he should probably be nice. "Look, I'm sorry if I insulted you or whatever. I've just got strong feelings about what I do. I'm a perfectionist and I like to be good at what I do. I'm speaking from experience if you don't take criticism you won't get anywhere with your music, because you have to play what people think is good."
