Roquelle closed her eyes, leaning against the wall of the fitness center, pretty much in the dark. She was trying hard to keep the tears at bay, but it was difficult when her entire body was in pain. That, and the fact that her ankle was currently in a cast and she was unable to dance like she wanted.
Rocky felt the hot tears begin to roll down her cheeks. She hated him. She hated him for doing this to her, he knew how much she loved dance. Dance was her life, the only thing that kept her grounded, and now she couldn't even walk. It was a struggle to get from the hospital to here.
She figured if she couldn't dance, sitting in the room would be close enough. It was a bad idea, because the one place she always felt safe almost seemed to be mocking her now. Roquelle groaned miserably as she slouched onto her side, the tears still coming. She was bruised and battered, and just ready to give up on life.

Hunter wiped his sweaty brow on one of the towels provided by the gym. He would have to remind to thank the towel lady, because the plush white fabric felt like ecstasy against his overheated skin. His sneaker-clad feet pounded against the treadmill as he ran at a steady pace, his eyes on the view of the night sky through the large floor-to-ceiling windows that lined the fitness center walls. In was late in the day, all the the soccer moms had long since left the building, for which he was thankful. Hunter wasn't trying to be conceited, but he hated being gawked at like he was some exhibit in a museum.
Hunter stepped off the treadmill when it finally slowed to a halt. He preferred going to the gym at night, there were less people. Less people to have to talk to, to smile at, to tolerate. He had never been much of a people person, he hated making small talk, and tended to avoid those who didn't set well with him. All it took was one bad impression, sometimes a mere expression on their face or what they were dressed in, was all it took for Hunter to decide whether or not he wanted to talk to them. There was one exception to this rule, though, and that was his weakness when it came to vulnerability. He hated seeing people struggle.
This fact is what caused him to pause and stare into the the dimly lit dance studio, the door had been propped open. He peered through the doorway, his brow furrowed. When a sob made its' way to his ears, he took a step into the room. Hunter's eyes scanned until they landed on a girl who was slumped on her side. Her whole demeanor screamed sorrow, and Hunter couldn't help but to want to do just that, help. He cleared his throat, his gaze fixed on her. "Hey, are you okay?" He asked tentatively.

Roquelle stayed on her side for quite awhile, eyes closed. She didn't want to get up, it wouldn't have worked very well anyway, she was way too weak to even attempt moving at this point. So fixed was she on her pain that she didn't notice anyone walk in, she hadn't thought anyone was here, and it startled her just a bit. Roquelle started to answer she was fine, but that would've been a bold-faced lie, considering she was laying in the middle of the floor, in the dark, with a cast on her ankle. She stared at the stranger for a bit, her eyes unexpectedly filling with tears she thought she'd cried out before lowering her gaze to the floor. There was no point in answering, it was obvious she wasn't okay, and she didn't see why it would matter to him anyway.
A tear slid down Roquelle's cheek as she curled tighter in a ball, wincing as she did so. The movement sent pain radiating throughout her body and she let out another sob, hating herself for being so weak, unable to help herself. She didn't care if the stranger was still here as she began crying again, the weight of how helpless she was settling down on her now.

Hunter's stare didn't waver as the girl looked him over, nor did the worried look leave his eyes. Part of him just wondered if he should just leave it be and walk away when she didn't answer him, but there was no way he would let himself do that. If he were to walk away, he knew that without a doubt it would just weigh on his heart and mind. With a soft sigh, Hunter entered the studio and walked slowly towards her. The way she was curled up on the hardwood flooring made his heart ache for the girl. He noticed that she had a cast on her leg,and a large one at that. Hunter crouched a few feet away from her, still giving her enough room to have her space. "What happened to you?" He asked again, his voice still neutral in tone.

Roquelle opened her eyes again, though she avoided his look, choosing instead to stare blankly ahead of her. He hadn't left yet, and she felt that oddly comforting. Not enough to tell him what happened though. She couldn't. Roquelle was afraid that if she started, she wouldn't be able to stop, and she would scare him off. Even now, she'd started crying and the tears were still coming, even though she wasn't making noise anymore. She didn't know how to tell him she'd been beaten by her boyfriend without falling apart. She couldn't tell him she'd been with him for five years and that she finally got away only recently, because she ended up in the hospital without letting spill that she was just ready to give up on life. That she was sure he would come find her eventually, and kill her for sure this time.

Hunter watched her for a few minutes, and when she still didn't say a word, he almost wanted to just get up and leave her there. But seeing how vulnerable and alone she seemed to be, he couldn't have done that if he tried. He didn't even know her name, but the guilt would still be there. A soft sigh escaped Hunter's lips. He got more comfortable, only taking his eyes off of her for a small moment before focusing them on her again. She would have to talk eventually, but until then, he would just talk to her. "Whatever it was must have been bad. Because you wont seem to tell me yourself, I'm going to have to come up with something myself." He said. "I'm Hunter, by the way. I've had a lot of shit happen to me in the past. But you, let's call you Hope- you should always have hope." He smiled in her direction. "Hope has been through a lot."

Why wasn't he leaving? Not that she wanted him to, quite the contrary actually. Roquelle had felt alone for so long, the fact that he was still here was a nice change. But she wasn't saying anything, didn't plan on saying anything, and that tended to drive people away. So why not him...? Roquelle's eyes flew up to his when he decided to call her Hope, widening slightly. She felt like that name couldn't be further from how she was feeling right now, there were a lot of feelings and Hope definitely wasn't one of them. Roquelle forgot about the fact that she was still laying on the ground, once again lowering her eyes and nodding ever-so lightly at his last statement. She had been through a lot, that part was right at least.

Hunter smiled a small smile at her nod, glad that he now new that she could actually hear him. "Well, Hope grew up in a huge city, one where things such as abuse could very easily go unnoticed. When she was young, she felt helpless in the middle of her parents. Her mother drank like it was a sport, and her father was quick to use his hands as a form of punishment." He looked down for a moment, it was a bit hard for him to tell his story to a stranger, but the fact that she didn't know it was about him made it a little easier. "Hope had this favorite place in the town house she lived in, and when things got really hard, she would hide there and wish that when she left that place a few hours later, things would magically get better."

Roquelle stared at Hunter as he told the story of Hope, a bit frightened of how close it was to her own story. She hadn't had abusive parents, she didn't have parents, but she had lived with her boyfriend pretty much her whole life, and he turned out to be abusive. And although she hadn't lived in a townhouse, the dance studio was that comfort place for her, to go and get away from everything.

Hunter was getting used to the silence, even though it felt a bit like he was talking to himself. He didn't mind though, if she eventually spoke to him, which he hoped she did. If she did, maybe he could help her. "Sometimes, when she emerged, for a few small minutes, things would seem okay. Her mom would try and put on a happy smile as she cooked dinner, or folded laundry- but Hope could smell that somewhat sweat stench of alcohol on her breath and see the way her mother flinched whenever she moved a certain way." It was funny how well he could tell this story, when he hadn't been able to articulate the events or feelings to anyone before. "It wasn't long before the times where Hope's mother and father's few fleeting moments of peace were gone completely. Hope loved her mother, even though she stopped giving her smiles and talking to her. Her hated towards her father, though, grew with every passing day. When Hope was twelve, she picked up a baseball bat and hit her father with it. She had had enough of hearing the beatings, and seeing the effects on her mother." Hunter paused, looking at the ceiling. That was a hard time for him, because that's when he was both freed and imprisoned in the same moment. "Shorty after that night, Hope became custody of the state- when her parent's gave her away."

Roquelle felt tears suddenly mist her eyes and she blinked them away. "Hope..." She coughed a bit, licking her lips before trying again. "Hope did have a bad life...does it get better for her?" She couldn't help but ask. Roquelle wanted Hope's life to get better, if only to have a little hope herself that her situation would get better, even if she was almost 100 percent sure it wouldn't.

Hunter couldn't help but smile when the girl finally spoke. Her question was a good one, though he debated on how exactly to answer it. Was his life better? It was certainly a far cry from where he'd been a few years ago, addicted to drugs and caught up in the worst crowd. "Well, that's up for debate." He said finally, "But she was taught to believe that the future is something to always look forward to, if you believe that it will get better."

Roquelle looked away again, shaking her head slightly. It was good that hope knew that, but she couldn't bring herself to hope for the best, not when she knew it would be a false hope. "I can't do that." She whispered, curling into another ball.

Hunter smiled, even though she was curling back into her ball on the floor. It saddened him, but he hoped that if he remained in a happy mood, she might follow suit and give him a smile or two. "Sure you can." He said, "I don't know your real story, but if you continue to be so negative, what do you think is going to happen? You need to have faith in yourself and be strong, or you'll be stuck like this forever."

Tears welled in Roquelle's eyes, and one even slid down her cheek as she shook her head. She knew exactly what would happen, it was only a matter of time before he found her again, and she knew that this time she wouldn't be as lucky to make it out alive. "I can't..." She finally got out, more tears sliding down her cheek. Roquelle hated this; this would be the third time she's cried since coming here, not including all the tears she'd shed in the hospital. She had no idea one could cry this much. "I can't have hope when I already know what's gonna happen."
