The lady behind the counter stood from her seated position. "How far apart is the pain?" She asked Gracie. "When did it start?" She asked a number of questions and Avery wished he'd timed the pain bursts or had paid better attention to Gracie. He had his fingers crossed that she'd drop the offended, frustrated mood she was in and actually answer the woman's questions.

Gracie sighed and started to answer the woman's questions on by one, having to think about the answers carefully first. She asked her something about how intense the pain was and she shook her head, "Well how the he'll am I supposed to know? It just hurts!" She shook her head as she finished answering her questions and it gave Gracie a break to think except that now another contraction hit her and she moved her arms from their crossed position to hold her tummy. "Oh my God. That's not good ow ow. Ow! Shit!" She shook her head and her eyes slammed shut.

Avery tensed with her next contraction and wanted to put his arms around her, but she just didn't seem like she'd appreciate it and he'd wind up with a black eye or something. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder and looked at the lady. "Is there anything you can do?" The woman handed Avery a clipboard to fill out and asked for her OBGYN's name. He gave it to her and then started filling out the paper work, he knew Gracie well enough to fill it out and when he was finished and handed the clipboard back the woman looked it over and then within seconds of handing it over, Gracie's doctor walked down the hall. "Well Gracie, looks like we're delivering those babies today, you excited?" He gave Avery a nod and then without saying anything turned and Avery followed behind him, pushing the wheelchair into an elevator behind the doctor. "Doesn't the water usually break?" It just popped into his head, he had no idea where his brain was pulling this stuff.

Gracie was helpless in the chair and she just sat and tried to deal with what had to be contractions. She grit her teeth, happy for the hand Avery placed on her shoulder. It disappeared soon after, but she couldn't focus on that. When her OBGYN arrived and spoke to her, her eyes got wide and she hiccupped a little. "Avery..." she said quietly. The doctor started to lead her away and She heard Avery so she knew he must be following. "She's just at the beginning stages of labor. The water doesn't always break before contractions start. We just need to get her into a room and check her dilation so we know what's going on," the doctor said. "Don't worry, guys, we deliver babies every day."

Avery took one hand off the wheel chair and placed it on her shoulder when she said his name, he wasn't planning on leaving her if he could help it. "I"m here Gracie girl." He stopped talking as the doctor answered his question and then when the elevator opened he followed the doctor down to a room and was quite pleased to see that it was a private room. He'd been meaning to say something in advanced about getting her her own room, but with the selecting of the house and closing the deal it had slipped his mind.

Gracie lifted her hand and placed it on top of Avery's, giving it a squeeze. When they got to the room, the doctor helped her onto the bed and checked everything that was necessary. "Well, Gracie, it looks like you're only dilated about two inches right now. Do you want me to set you up with an epidural for a bit later?" Gracie's eyes flashed from the doctor to Avery and then back to the doctor. She gave her OBGYN a nod and licked her lips. The doctor left and Gracie looked at Avery, "I decided I didn't want to get one, but this hurts so bad. I'm sure the babies will be okay... I hope..."

Avery stood off to one side of Gracie, trying not to get in the doctor's way. He found Gracie's hand and only when the doctor left did he say anything. "I'm not worried about it." He kissed her cheek. "I want you comfortable and if an epidural is what's going to make you more comfortable then I'm fine with it. Tons of women use them, many healthy babies have been born and there's no significant difference between those with and those without it so by all means, don't worry about explaining it to me." He kissed her cheek again and then her lips and then went back to standing by her side.

Gracie smiled lightly and looked at him. "Thank you," she said. She knew that didn't make sense, but really she just wanted him to agree with her. She didn't want to Fight right now, contrary to how she'd just been acting. She sighed. "So did we decide on Harper and Devyn?" she asked. She wanted to make sure she had it right, and she wanted to get that out of the way. "I like those names."

Avery made no comment after the thank you, he didn't feel it was necessary. He smiled back at her and ran his fingers through her hair. "I think Harper and Devyn is perfect and if you're happy then I am too." His fingers slid through her hair again and then met her neck, he massaged it gently. "Are you excited at all?" He was, he couldn't wait to hold his girls.

Gracie glanced at Avery with his question. "Excited about what?" she asked. She was excited about finally seeing their babies. She wasn't excited, however, about the labor. She was terrified about that. She was nearly shaking because she was so nervous and she still wasn't so sure that she'd be a good mother. She knew that she was going to let them date whoever they wanted to and be happy for them even if she thought it was a bad idea. "I'm not sure what I'm feeling..." Another contraction hit her and there it was, her water broke. "Well there's pain, I'm feeling pain."

Avery opened his mouth to answer, but she started to writher in pain and his heart broke over and over again for her. When she said she was feeling pain he apologized again and again and moved to hold her. "I meant about seeing their beautiful faces." He bit his bottom lip. "I'll go get the doctor or a nurse maybe they'll have that epidural ready for you." He gave one of her arms a quick squeeze and stuck his head out the door. "Her water just broke and she's in a lot of pain..."

Gracie let out a groan, but nodded. She just wanted this to end. She wished it would get over with soon. Then she thought about their parents and she shook her head, pushing through the pain to let out a yell, "Avery! Avery, we didn't call our parents!" She was almost panicked now that she'd thought of it. What if she had the babies and no one was there? Sure it wouldn't be the end of the world, but she wanted people to be waiting when they were born. A nurse nodded at Avery, but told him that she couldn't get an epidural until she was dilated five centimeters, but she would check Gracie out now that her water had broken and proceeded into the room.

Avery stepped out of the room as the nurse went in, he heard what Gracie said and decided while the nurse was checking on Gracie he could call their parents. He struggled for a second on deciding who he should call first. He decided he'd call her mom first, it might not be his favorite most comfortable choice, but it might be looked on as a kind gesture. The phone rang and as it continued to ring he crossed his fingers that Tally would answer, telling Tally would be so much easier.

Tally heard the phone ring and stood up, watching the television as she started toward the phone. She'd gotten home since Gracie had left for the new house and she didn't expect that phone call to come at all. Their mother was working today. Tally picked up the phone off the wall and answered with a "Hello?" The nurse checked Gracie's dilation and rushed out to find the doctor for her epidural. She was already at four centimeters.

Avery was stunned when Tally answered, mixed emotions running through him. The nurse had run out of the room at the same time and he had questions. "Sorry..." He cleared his throat. "Tally, it's Avery, we're at the hospital, Gracie's in labor..." He turned and looked in the room. "Is, is your mom home?"
