“Are you sure, Molly?” Tad questioned, trying to get her to say that she wanted him to stay home. He knew the risks involved in her being pregnant, he had tried to get her to choose a different route, adoption or even a surrogate. Molly, however, wouldn’t have any part in those plans. She wanted to have the baby herself. “I really can stay home. They’ll be fine without me. Edward can fill in for one night. He doesn’t have a very pregnant wife to look after…”
“No,” Molly said, sternly, as if she were scolding him. “You’re going and if it wouldn’t be bad for the baby’s hearing development, I would be going with you. You owe your devotion to the band.”
“Maybe so, Mol, but you’re my wife. I owe my devotion to you a little more. Besides, they understand,” he argued back, but she wouldn’t have any of it. He was going to the show, she had made her decision and counted to three, in a matter of speaking. Letting out a soft sigh he nodded, “Alright, but call me if something happens. I’ll have my phone on me the whole time, except when we’re playing. Then it will be on my amp. I’ll try to check it every so often.”
Molly just nodded and rushed him off to the door and he smiled, turning around to face her as he reached it. He kissed her, slowly and selfishly, wishing she would change her mind, but she wasn’t going to, and he knew that. “Alright babe, just take it easy, go to bed if you start feeling sick. I talked to Julian earlier, told him to help you out if you need anything, so he’s good for at least two glasses of water before he gets distrac—“ Molly cut him off with a laugh, putting her finger to his lips.
“Tad, I will be fine. Go. Have a good time. I love you.”
Smiling again he nodded, “I love you too,” he said lightly before kissing her again and walking through the door.
He reached the venue with his band and couldn’t help this nagging feeling he was having. He brushed it off, trying to forget about it. It was probably just nerves, she had told him not to worry, and he’d be scolded if he called her every ten minutes to check. He helped set up for their set after the band ahead of them played. They were the main event tonight, so they had a decently sized setlist that was supposed to fill two hours. He had explained to them that if Molly called him, he would have to leave and they all understood, of course. After they had finished setting their stage, they started to play as loudly as humanly possible, or so it seemed. Tad’s phone sat on his amp and was quickly forgotten about as their set was underway. Three songs in and Tad’s mind was completely wiped clean as adrenaline took over his body.
A half our passed, fourty-five minutes, and then at the hour mark, the phone went off. Several times. Tad didn’t notice. He continued to play, jumping around the stage; his shirt soaked with sweat, his usual flat billed hat was also drenched around the rim.
After another half hour of this, something clicked in his mind at a break in the set. He walked over to the amp to check his phone and saw the missed calls from Molly. His brow furrowed and he opened his voicemail, holding the phone up to his ear to hear his wife’s terrified voice. “Tad, it’s bad. So bad… So bad that I don’t know if I am going to make it. Baby, take care of our babies and never, and I mean never, let any of you forget how much I loved you. Tad, honey, I’m sorry I brokemy promise. I know I said I wouldn’t…do this to you. Baby, I love you—“ A huge thud came from the line. No. He thought. He couldn’t move. He knew he should have stayed home, he knew there was something wrong. It just wasn’t right. His feet were still glued to the spot when they started the next song, but Tad wasn’t playing. He wasn’t moving. He was just staring at his phone. His heart was beating too fast for any of his functions to work. His brain processes were going so slowly. Axle noticed first and looked at his best friend, “Tad!” He hollered, “What the fuck, man?!”
Tad looked up at him, face as pale as a ghost and Axle’s eyes grew large. “Oh shit.” He stood from his set and pulled Tad away from his amp, taking his bass and setting it on the stand. He gave Ansley a look and she licked her lips and nodded. “Alright, guys, change of plans. The rest of our set is going to be Acoustic. Hope that’s alright.” The crowd cheered, but Tad couldn’t hear anything. He couldn’t do anything as Axle led him to the car.
They drove Tad’s car to the hospital, not wanting to take the van in case Axle didn’t make it back before they had to pack up. Nothing was real to Tad right now. Other than the fact that his child and wife could be dying, he didn’t know anything. He walked into the waiting room as calmly as possible, trying to keep himself collected, Axle by his side. Cole was on him in an instant, “Where the hell have you been?” he hissed, standing from his chair.
Tad gave him a look that could kill, “I came as soon as I got the messages.”
“Not soon enough, Molly’s been in there for an hour!”
“If you hadn’t noticed, she’s my wife and she’s carrying my child. Don’t you dare imply that I’m careless with their lives. I begged her to let me stay home tonight!”
Alison stepped between the two and Axle laid a light hand on Tad’s shoulder. “This is no one’s fault,” she said calmly. “There are better things to waste energy on. Molly wouldn’t want you two to be fighting.”
Both of them gave her a nod and then looked at each other. They could both tell that the other was just as worried.
“Is there a Tadeus Mayes here?” a doctor called out. Tad stood and made his way to the man.
“Mr. Mayes, the surgeons are doing everything they can to make sure that your wife makes it.” He paused for a second. “I have some good news, as well. You are the father of a healthy baby girl.” It took him a moment to process, but when he did, his face grew into a larger than life smile. He waved the small group over without turning away from the doctor and they joined them. “So she’s alright?” Tad asked.
The doctor nodded, “Under the circumstances, the baby did extremely well. Though, I’m sure Molly was extremely cautious during her pregnancy, the weaknes of her uterine walls could not withstand the pressure caused by the baby. If she makes it out of surgery, there is a good chance we will need to induce a coma so she can heal properly.” The smile slowly disappeared from Tad’s face as this news was delivered, but he nodded grimly, understanding. The doctor continued, “The possibility of her having another child will be reduced to next to nothing.” Tad heard the sniffle from behind him, but didn’t turn. What he had heard was that his wife would make it through surgery, although being in an induced coma and he had a healthy baby somewhere in this hospital. It was sad, but good and it was hard for him to separate his emotions. He knew now that that goodbye kiss earlier might have been their last, and he was glad now that he had let it linger the way he did. He hoped, and prayed, that it wouldn’t be the case.
“Can I see her?” he asked lightly. “The baby?”
The doctor nodded with a smile. “Yes, Mr. Mayes.”
The doctor led them back to the nursery and Tad watched as doctor spoke to one of the nursery techs and she smiled at the group before she walked over one of the hospital baby beds. His eyes settled on the sweet little girl and he shook his head gently. She was beautiful. Perfect, even. A smile rested on his lips and he couldn’t seem to wipe it away. Axle rested a hand on his best friend’s shoulder and smiled right along with him. “I didn’t have my cigars ready,” Tad joked, trying to lighten the mood. He got a small chuckle from the group and then the tech came around to them. “We have a room set aside for you until everything is settled.” She pointed them to it and they all went there before she wheeled in the baby for the first time. Tad’s eyes gleamed as the little girl was placed into his arms.
He held her for the first time. She fit (basically) in both of his hands and it seemed like she was too tiny to be real. “She weighs exactly six pounds,” the tech explained. He licked his lips as he looked down at the baby, her features so tiny, but not unlike he and Molly’s. “She doesn’t have a name yet, sir. Do you know what you want to name her?” Looking down at the baby still, he nodded. “Yes. Emilie Hope… Emilie Hope Elizabeth.” He added a second middle name. He and Molly hadn’t talked about that, but he wanted her to have a piece of her mother. If she would never know her, she needed to have some part of her. “You’re beautiful,” he said gently. “I won’t let anything happen to you.” It was a promise, one that he intended to keep. He had made the same promise to Julian nearly three years ago. Then be blinked. Julian. “Where’s Julian?” he asked, looking up at Cole and Alison.
“He’s with Noah and Sophie. We didn’t think this was the best situ—“ Tad cut him off before he could finish. “He needs to be here. We told him he could be here to see his baby sister.”
Alison looked at him for a moment and pulled out her phone. “I’ll call Noah.”
The little girl was passed around the group once before finding her way back to Tad. He held her so close to his body as if protecting her from all of the bad things happening in the world. Everything that couldn’t be helped, but he could help this. He could make this little girl happy. Not long after, Julian appeared in the door, Noah and Sophie had stayed in the waiting room, but Alison brought the five-year-old in to meet his sister. Tad smiled at him, “Come here, bud,” he said. Julian did and looked down at the tiny baby. “Her name is Emilie.”
“Emilie,” Julian repeated, giving a nod.
Tad stood and smiled at Julian, “Sit down and you can hold her.”
Julian sat eagerly and looked up at the man he had come to know as his father. Tad smiled and knelt down, placing the baby gently in the little boy’s arms, helping him even when he wasn’t sure he needed it, just for that extra bit of protection over his newborn. Tad was on his knees beside the chair and both boys were looking down at their new family member. Axle smiled at the scene and pulled his phone out. He took a picture of the scene and neither of them noticed the snapshot being taken. Axle glanced over to Alison who was giving him a smile and Cole, who gave him a nod before they all went back to watching. He received a call from Ansley not too long after and excused himself to the waiting room. Tad still didn’t notice. He was gone for a good twenty minutes, but when he came back, he smiled at him, “Hey, Tad, Ansley and Jude are here.”
Alison stood. “Here, Cole and I will go to the waiting room. You can have the room for a while. Tad smiled at the two thanking them. As they left, Cole put a firm hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I know you would have been here sooner if you could have. It wouldn’t have done any good anyway.”
Tad shook his head, “No, I’m sorry. Thank you. For being there for her.”
“I only did what my instincts told me.”
They were silent for a few moments and then the two left and Jude and Ansley entered the room.
“We’re gonna have to let Aunt Ansley have a turn, alright, Julian.”
Nodding, Julian allowed Tad to take Emilie from his arms and pass her off to Ansley who was in love at first site. All three of the band members were looking down in a cluster at the beautiful little miracle. Tad turned his attention back to Julian for the moment. “You’re the perfect big brother,” he said. “Emilie is going to love you.” This made Julian smile. He wanted to be the best big brother he could be, he had promised her that he would when she was in his mother’s tummy. “Where’s mommy?” he asked. Tad licked his lips, not sure how to answer that question, in truth, he didn’t fully know the answer. “She’s sleeping right now,” he lied. He didn’t want to worry him. He stood up and ruffled his step-son’s hair, stepping out of the room momentarily. He walked up to the counter and inquired about Molly. The woman said they hadn’t gotten any news and Tad’s face fell and he nodded.
He stood outside the room for a moment, leaning against the wall. A doctor approached him shortly after, “Are you Tadeus Mayes?”
“Yes, sir,” he said.
The doctor explained in detail what had gone wrong with the pregnancy, what needed to be done and their course of action. Concluding with, “Your wife is stable for the time being. We’ve induced a coma and she’s in a room. You can see her whenever you want, but we ask that visitors be limited to one person at a time. She’s in a fragile state and we don’t want her condition to be effected by her surroundings.” Tad nodded and thanked the doctor. “Do you think it would be possible for me to go in with my son, though. He’s only five.” The doctor nodded, “Yes sir. We can make that exception, but no children that aren’t immediately related and the newborn can only be in the room during visiting hours, the rest of the time she will need to be in the nursery.” Tad nodded again and the doctor gave him a room number before heading down the hallway.
