Nick groaned as he heard the small child wake up in the middle of the night. She was only a month old, so it was very normal for her to wake in the middle of the night, but a lot of times, she would just wake up to cry. This was a new experience for him. He had realized that some babies did this, but Gage hadn’t, so he just automatically assumed that Hollis would be the same way. He was dead wrong. That didn’t make the fact that it was two a.m. and there was a wailing child in his room any better. I’d better just get up he thought. Don’t want to wake Gage up too. He got up and plucked the small baby from her crib and started to rock her in his arms, giving a soft chuckle when he looked to Gage’s small bed and saw him still asleep with his mouth wide open. “Who am I kidding? That kid could sleep through a hurricane.”
Just in case, though, he made his way down to the kitchen so he could try to feed his daughter. When he got there he saw his older sister fallen asleep on what looked like a tower of her wedding plans. He sighed. He was getting a little tired of her planning so rigorously for a wedding that was never going to happen. He decided to ignore it as he warmed up a bottle, doing it the right way for once after Tess had gotten onto him for trying to do it in the microwave a few days before. He let out a sigh, bouncing the little girl lightly in his arms, trying to get her to stop crying. Of course it didn’t work, the girl basically never stopped crying.
Ali Rene jolted awake suddenly and sighed when she saw Nick warming a bottle while trying to comfort Hollis. She licked her lips and looked down at the plans she had spread around her in every direction. She knew this wedding wasn’t going to happen too. Layne had been out of town for a long time now. It made sense, his work needed him elsewhere right now and she understood that, but it was getting harder than she’d expected it to be. She just wished he had decided to stay home. She couldn’t be angry, though, she’d told him he should go. In the mean time, she was staying at home and making sure that his house was safe.
Nick glanced over at Ali and smirked, “Good morning, sunshine.”
Ali simply rolled her eyes, “Shut up. I got on a roll in my planning and I guess I fell asleep…”
Nick smiled and shrugged as much as he could with a baby in his arms. “Well you’d better get to bed. Wouldn’t want you to have a sore back in the morning.”
Ali shook her head, “Nah. I’m good. I had a long nap.” She stood and walked over to the fridge, grabbing a Mountain Dew. “I could stay up all night.”
“What’s the point in that, Al? I mean, you’re not studying for a test, you’re planning a wedding. Not to mention a wedding that doesn’t have a date set.”
Ali shrugged again. She realized that Nick was quite against her engagement to Layne. More so now that Layne was gone. Malachi was the same way, but she’d never let it bother her before. Besides, planning the wedding sort of made her forget that he wasn’t around. “Some of us didn’t have families in high school,” she said sharply, sitting back down again.
Nick rolled his eyes. Maybe he wasn’t the most responsible person in the world, but he had never done wrong as far as his kids were concerned. He wished he could be the man that Gage saw him as, but he knew that he wasn’t. The fact that he had wronged Tess so many times confirmed that. The simple thought was that he would never leave her. Not for good. They were both hot headed and they fought often, but he wouldn’t leave her alone for long. Not again and it wasn’t just because Zane would hunt him down. It was because he really did love her. Tess and the two beautiful kids they’d managed to create together. Maybe it was a mistake, but it was one that ended in two miracles, especially where Gage was concerned.
He didn’t reply to her remark, he just tested the bottle on his arm and walked out of the room. He didn’t need two girls screaming at him at the same time, one for food and the other for apparently being a jerk. He sat down with the baby and touched the nipple to her lips. This was what she’d wanted because she became quiet as she suckled on the bottle. He let out a light sigh of relief before he heard a little voice coming from the top of the stairs. He let out a little groan and glanced up to the top of the staircase. Gage was on the third step down, his chubby little hands wrapped around the banister rails. “What doin’ daddy?” he asked in a loud whisper as if he were trying to stay quiet, however, he didn’t really understand the concept of whispering so his voice was just as loud as if he had been talking in a normal register.
“Hollis got hungry, bub,” he told his son. “Go back to bed, I’ll be up there in a minute.” Gage looked sheepishly back at his dad and Nick sighed, knowing the little boy wasn’t about to just go back to sleep and make life a little easier. He gave in and rolled his eyes, “Come on down, then. On your butt so you don’t fall.”
Gage looked happy as his dad told him he could come downstairs and he did so, sliding down each step on his rump like he was told to do multiple times a day. He wasn’t exactly the most graceful child.
When he finally got to his father he climbed up on the couch and sat down beside him watching his baby sister drink her formula. “You’ve got to be quiet in case she decides to go back to sleep. We don’t want to have to stay up all night,” Nick said lightly to him and Gage nodded, putting a finger to his lips as if proving his dad’s point.
