Aya sighed and turned to lie on her back so she could stare at the dark blue-almost purple ceiling. She had been having a hard time sleeping; her eyes only closing for at most, a couple of minutes before she would sigh and turn in her bed once more. She tried to rack her mind for a reason to stay awake; a last minute thought or task she had forgotten to do in the day but she could come up with nothing.
Lightly running her fingers through her now-long hair, she turned on her side to pick up her phone. Maybe having a phone conversation with Monte would help. She blinked a bit at the bright light that beamed out of the little thing as she unlocked the phone, pressed 4 and the green call button before cradling the device against her ear and closing her eyes. It wasn’t that Monte bored her, god no. But something about the way he spoke to her, made her calm enough and feel safe enough that she could just close her eyes and sleep.
Then again, if that wasn’t going to work out, she could always ask him to pick her up and they could go on a late night date. It was something the two of them were in the habit of doing; just driving around, finding a place they could call their own and stay there until they got tired. They’d curl up in each others arms and talk about anything and everything. Sometimes they didn’t even need to talk. They’d just sit there, holding each other and it was already perfect.

Monte rolled over on his side and searched the floor for his cell phone. He could hear it buzzing somewhere among the discarded clothes. He ran a hand over his eyes to help him open them and then dragged his finger across the screen to answer it. "You alright?" He asked as a greeting. He peaked at the alarm clock, surprised that he'd actually fallen asleep already. He'd spent most of the day chasing Harper and Devyn around at the park. "Did I forget something? A date I promised or something?" He wracked his brain for any memory of making a promise to take her out.

She almost laughed at the panic that was clear in his voice. “Yes I’m fine. I’m sorry, did I wake you?” Aya couldn’t help but drop her voice to the level of a whisper. She curled back into the warmth of her comforter and closed her eyes. “I couldn’t sleep”, she confessed softly. Now that she thought about it, it was a bit selfish of her to call him so late at night but she couldn’t help it. She had come to rely on him like a kid with a baby blanket or stuffed animal. Then again, Monte was a lot hotter than that. “Calm down Monte, you didn’t forget anything.” She laughed softly; she couldn’t help it. A few years ago, he would have never been so concerned. And now? Well, she was sure he wouldn’t have recognized himself.

Monte shook his head. "Nope, you didn't wake me." He wondered if he'd get away with the lie. "You can't sleep huh? That sounds like code for I want you to come over..." He grinned, he was awake now, he might as well try his luck. He put the phone on speaker and tossed his comforter off so he could get out of bed. He pulled a pair of jeans over his boxers and started searching for his keys in the dark. "Are Cameron and Mikhael home?" He had no qualms with climbing through her bedroom window late at night, but he liked to know when he was at risk for being skewered by her cousin and brother. He was sure they still didn't really care for him.

She snorted her disbelief. “Yeah right.” Aya shook her head and sat up in bed, leaning against her pillows as she adjusted the phone to her ear. She couldn’t help but smile at the excitement she could hear in Monte’s voice. Well boys will be boys “Cameron’s over at Taylor’s but Kai is home, asleep I’m sure. His classes have been knocking him out lately.” It was true too; she had barely seen her brother over the past week. He’d leave early in the morning and return in the afternoon. But he would spend most of the time before dinner to lock himself in the music room and practice whatever assignment he had. He’d rush through dinner, excuse himself and go out to spend time with his not-girlfriend, Donia. She couldn’t blame him though; he still did spend weekends with them, usually using the time to do whatever errands their mother had for him before lazing about the living room or kitchen with Cameron.
“Don’t worry, if you are planning to climb up my window, he won’t notice.” Aya couldn’t help but laugh at the sudden rush of giddiness that tickled her insides. “Or you could just pick me up and we could go somewhere.”

Monte laughed as she caught him in the lie. He weighed the options she offered him in his head and came to the realization that he didn't have a preference. "There aren't many places to go this late, but I'm sure we could find something if you're against staying in tonight." He might stand a chance staying in with her as long as Mikhael was asleep and Cameron was MIA. "I just have to find my keys." His fingers closed in around the keys at that moment. "Never mind, I'll be there soon, you decide what to do before I get there K?" He hung up on her, hoping she'd give him grief about it when he got there. He loved pushing her buttons, hell he simply loved having her around again and ticking her off was half the fun.
He pulled a clean shirt out of the closet and pulled it over his bare shoulders, knowing by the end of the night it'd just wind up on some floor somewhere. The drive wasn't long, but he'd spoiled himself by staying at Avery's and only being five houses down from her that the drive seemed much longer. He parked on the street and walked around to her window, he found a couple of pebbles and threw them at her window.

Aya weighed out the options as well and decided that it would be better if they stayed in. The thought of freezing her ass off didn’t seem too appealing to her just yet. She was perfectly content to stay in, especially if Monte was there to keep her occupied. She was just about to express said thoughts to her boyfriend on the other line when he cut her off. She sighed, knowing she was making a face and quite prepared to bug him about it when he did get there.
Doodle Jump was a good enough distraction that she didn’t hear the first two or three pebbles on her window. But the tap-tap-tapping soon got loud enough that she jumped and rushed over to open the window for Monte. “I should have half a mind to not let you in at all; I can’t believe you hung up on me!” She bit her bottom lip and smiled; the both of them knew he’d come up anyway. She was thankful that she had unknowingly picked the room nearest the large oak tree that he had climbed on many occasions. It made sneaking in and sneaking out so much easier for the both of them, not that nobody knew about it; on the contrary, her family had the habit of teasing her about it. Aya unconsciously tugged on the purple tank top she had on, then shrugging off her insecurity. Not like he hadn’t seen everything before anyway.

Monte stopped his arm halfway through throwing another pebble and grinned up at her. He knew he'd here about hanging up in her. He dropped the pebbles on the ground and jammed his hands into his pocket. "If you're not letting me in I might as well go back home." He raised his eyebrows, daring her to tell him to go. He wouldn't but he'd make her think he was really going to leave, if only to hear her ask him not to. He climbed up and pulled her by her tank top to him. "What are you fussing about?" He asked, thinking she had no reason to be self conscious around him. Of all the people in the world, he would be the last one to care how she looked no matter how bad she thought she looked.
"Come here babe." He wrapped his arms around her neck and kissed her gently on the lips. "Your sure he's not going to wake up and tear my head off?" Her brother and cousin had been relatively civil with him at that party, but there were people around and there was no telling what they might do to him in their own house. Really nothing they could do to him or threaten him with would make him stay away from her again. "God I missed you."

She mimicked his expression, quirking her eyebrows at him and trying her best not to laugh. "Okay, then I guess I'll say goodnight." But he had already climbed up to her window, easily pulling her closer to him. Aya lay a hand on his shoulder and smiled; she was in truth a bit embarrassed that he had caught her feeling self conscious. "I don't know, honestly." She bit her bottom lip again before he leaned closer to kiss her. A swarm of butterflies invaded her stomach; there was that thrill again. The thrill she always got when he kissed her.
She giggled softly as she kissed him back before extricating herself out of his embrace so that he could come into her room. "Oh I'm sure he'd try but mom would pull him away before he did any real damage." Aya hoped he knew that she was teasing. She loved her family, especially her brother and her cousin but she would never let them do anything to Monte. Aya bit her bottom lip again before smiling. "Missed you too Monte." And she didn't expound; there just weren't enough words in the universe to explain how much she had missed him. Terribly. Extremely. And all those other words that ended in -ly.

"Would you really have let me leave if I hadn't climbed up here before you could answer?" He asked, watching her extricate herself from his embrace. He remained where he was, only leaning against the window frame, watching her as she spoke. "Oh you'd wait until your mom heard all the commotion and came up here to save me, you wouldn't do so yourself." He smirked at her and pushed himself off the window to follow her into the room. He'd been here many times before and yet everything seemed so new, like he hadn't been here before.
"How exactly do you know your mom wouldn't get a few punches in herself?" He asked, choosing her desk as a new leaning post. He picked up a random item from her desk and started playing with it, partly because he wasn't sure what to do with his hands and partly because he wanted to annoy her a bit, see her react. If everything went according to plan, she'd put herself in his arms again and he wouldn't have to play with random objects to get her fired up. "Even if your mom doesn't disapprove of me, she still might want to pound my face in for one thing or another you know, the only person who can save me is you." He meant that on more than one level, but he didn't really want to discuss that again, it had upset her the last time they'd talked about it and it would mostly likely do the same this time.

Aya rolled her eyes as she sat on her bed, crossing her legs. There he was, dressed to go out pretty much and she was in her tank top and short sleeping shorts. She had to keep reminding herself that there was nothing he hadn’t seen but the thought of him seeing her scars terrified her just a bit. “Naah, you know my mom. She’d scold Kai for being rude and tell him to go to his room and he’d sulk like a giant puppy.” She bit her bottom lip to quell the huge smile that was just threatening to break her face. “And yeah, maybe I would wait for my mom to come in before helping you out.” The both of them knew it was a lie however; she would have fought dragons for him, as strange as that sounded coming from a girl.
She stood up and snatched the object out of his hand; it was a shell she had been using as a paperweight. It had been something her grandfather had given her. “Give me that.” Aya muttered softly as she set it down again on her desk. She wondered if he had suddenly felt the tense atmosphere between them set in; she looked at him and moved closer instead of finding her position on the bed again. Aya lightly cupped his cheek, standing on her tip toes to kiss him. “I’m not leaving you again… Please, please don’t say things like that. It terrifies me.”

Monte raised his eyebrows, he knew her mom alright, there wasn't a kinder or more understanding soul in the world, that woman was a saint for putting up with him and his ridiculous antics with her daughter and for that matter, without her. "I don't really think you'd wait, I think you'd be between me and him before the first punch was thrown, though with the way I've treated you, I wouldn't blame you if you let him hit me, hell I wouldn't blame you if you punched me yourself." He grinned, this was what he loved best about being with Aya.
He relinquished the shell without needing to be told twice, she'd responded just how he'd expected and his plan worked out wonderfully as she moved closer to him and her hand cupped his cheek. He closed his eyes as her lips kissed his. "Say things like what?" He whispered. He was still bating her, but he hoped she spoke the truth when she said she was never leaving him again. He didn't believe in love at first sight or soul mates or any of that fantasy nonsense, but if he did Aya was it.

Aya scoffed and rolled her eyes, pretending that what he said wasn’t true but it really was. Deep down, she knew she would have got in between them, begging Kai to let her go and to leave Monte be. No matter how much they disapproved, she had her heart set on being with him and nothing they said or did would change that fact. Maybe that was why her mother was so kind to Monte. She had accepted this fact way before Aya knew that her heart had decided on it. Maybe that was just how mothers were and she was thankful every day that she had a mother who loved her and accepted her, mistakes and heartbreaks and all.
She couldn’t help but laugh softly at his side comment; Aya laughed and moved closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Yeah but you let me do that anyway. It’s not like you’re scared of me hitting you. Sad to say, I have a feeling you’ve gotten used to it already.” She giggled and blushed as she remembered the many times she had used Monte as a living punching bag and he had not complained a single time.
She trembled but she knew it wasn’t from the cold. Monte was suitable enough to keep her warm. It was fear that made her shake, fear that made lower lip tremble as she tried to find the words to answer him. “You don’t need to be saved anymore… Please… I…” She was so terrified that when push came to shove, she could not be someone who could save anyone. Not herself, let alone Monte. And she didn’t want to drag him through that again. Never again.

Monte let his eyes roll into the back of his head as he thought about what she said about him being used to being physically abused by her. It was true, he'd absorbed many punches from her and not a single one of them bothered him. I truth were told he honestly thought he deserved the abuse. "I believe I used to be used to it." He grinned. "If you punched me now I might cower like a little bitch." He lied, and wrapped his arms around her tighter as she trembled. "I know, you saved me and I won't let myself get into any more sticky situations alright?" He kissed her forehead and with one fell swoop he picked her up and carried her back to her bed.
He laid her down gently and settled himself next to her. "We don't have to talk about it, you have my word, I'm not letting you go and renounced the whoring around lifestyle. Honest." He looked into her eyes and held her gaze. "Tell me I'm lying, because if anyone can tell it's you." It was true, she'd been calling his lies since day one at her mom's cafe, she'd become better at calling his bluffs than his own mother or siblings.
"What exactly is on your mind right now?" He asked, glancing at the clock. It was late, he assumed something was bothering her if she couldn't fall asleep. He wasn't trying to get out of being with her, that was the last thing he wanted to do, but maybe if she thought about it, they could reach the bottom of this sleeplessness and with him by her side she could drift off too sleep.

She couldn’t help but smile when he was so charming to her. It made her forget how scared she felt for just a little while. Monte had always had that effect on her. Aya laughed a bit and wrapped her arms around his neck as he easily lifted her into his arms before depositing her on her bed. “You’re such a bad liar Monte. You? Cower like a little bitch? Don’t make me laugh. Though I bet Garret would kill to see that, eh?”
Aya moved up so she could see him properly, his face beautifully painted with moonlight. She smiled and lightly traced her fingertips along his features. His beautiful eyes could still make her swoon. “I believe you”, she said. And she really did. She knew he’d never hurt her, not on purpose anyway. And that he would try to be there for her as much as he could. He already did those things but for some reason his words just reaffirmed everything she knew he thought and felt for her. She didn’t like talking about those low times because it scared her. It scared her to think about a time when the past would repeat itself. She couldn’t bear to leave him and she was sure she couldn’t live without him anyway. They were the two different sides of a coin. They made a pair, they made… She didn’t know what. But she knew that whatever it was… It was beautiful.
She sighed and leaned against him, closing her eyes to see if his presence was enough to get her to sleep. It didn’t feel like it; she still felt wide awake. “I don’t know to be honest. I’ve been racking my brain for the past two nights, trying to figure out what it is but I can’t… I haven’t forgotten to do anything, I haven’t…” Aya laughed softly and shook her head. “I seriously don’t know. What do you think it is?”
