Xavier lay flopped on the couch in the main room of the hotel suite, his head hanging over the edge. Jeanne walked out of her room, rubbing her damp hair with a towel.
"You still lying there?" she laughed, threw the towel at his head, and switched on the lamp next to the couch. Xavier groaned and pushed the towel off his face onto the floor, then shielded his eyes from the light with his arm.
"I drove here all the way from Mabtown," he muttered. "You guys slept the whole way while I dealt with all the post-hurricane exodus traffic."
"You should still get up soon," Ezra said, joining them from the other bedroom. "Our tour at Riverside U is in less than an hour."
Xavier sat up and pulled his shoes back out from under the coffee table. "Not like it matters," he said snarkily. "You're not going to end up wanting to stay. Too far away. You'll want to either follow the rest of the family to Portland, or you'll go to Morristown U to be near your dad."
"Fuck you, Xav," Ezra said casually, though a frown creased his forehead. He'd expected Xavier to be skeptic of his ability to be so far away from his family for the first time in his eighteen years, but the implied insult still stung. "I'm an adult, I can handle it. And Riverside has a great Psych program, better than Morristown or the schools near Portland. And it's not like you guys have to follow me wherever I end up transferring anyway, I don't get why you're acting like you do."
"Someone has to make sure you do more than study. I don't give a shit where I transfer to, I'm only going to school because my dad will kill me if I don't."
Ezra raised an eyebrow at Jeanne, waiting for her to chime in. She shrugged.
"Someone has to make sure Xav does more than drink and chase girls."
