Madison sighed and stared out the window, silently cursing herself for volunteering to stay. Her shift had ended at 3:00, but one of the other teachers had gone home sick, which left the staff short by one. Since she didn't have class until six, Madison had stepped in to help. She didn't mind; it wasn't a hardship. She loved playing with the kids, even though the yelling did give her the occasional migraine. Plus, taking the extra hours didn't hurt. However, if she knew that she'd wind up being late for her class due to a parent's irresponsibility, she would have just went straight back to campus. Oh my god, it's 6:15! Did you forget that you had a kid or something? Seriously! She moved away from the window and started putting away toys, making sure she kept a close eye on the innocent, forgotten child.

"Shit, shit, shit, God dammit, shit." David continued cursing to himself, as he raced straight over to the preschool to pick up his three-year-old daughter, Brooklyn. He had been kept behind at the Music Venue longer than expected, nonetheless, he had lost track of time. "They just couldn't of kept me some other day. It just had to be today..." he growled under his breath, shaking his head as he finally turned into the preschool parking lot, screeching to a stop.
He slipped out of his car and sprinted to his daughter's room, finding that she was indeed the last one waiting to be picked up. "Daddy!" the three-year-old squealed, running up to hug her daddy's leg. "Hey there, Brooky!" David greeted back, picking up his daughter in his arms, holding her close, "Sorry I took so long. Daddy had to stay behind and finish up his music." "Otay, daddy. I still wuv you." Brooklyn said, wrapping her little arms around his neck, hugging him tighter. David kissed her forehead before noticing the girl who had stayed behind with Brooklyn. "Hey, thanks for watching over my baby girl. And...I really am sorry for being so late. It won't happen again, I swear." he told the girl in the most sincere voice possible.

Relieved at the long awaited arrival of Brooklyn's father, Madison quickly put away the last of the toys and headed over to him. Typical male behavior, she thought to herself. A mother would have at least had the common decency to call first. She figured he was one of those temporary fathers that rarely picked up his kids and was always late while doing so. She had seen tons of those in her line of work. He was lucky that his daughter was so forgiving. "No biggie, it's my job," she said, managing to maintain her composure. "I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not, but there's a late fee in place if you fail to pick up your child after six. It's ten dollars for every ten minute period. You can pay it now or at the end of the month." She threw on her coat and grabbed her purse. If the traffic cooperated, she could sneak into her psych class and possibly catch the last twenty minutes of it. Hopefully, she wouldn't miss anything too crucial. She redirected her gaze at Brooklyn and smiled at the wide-eyed little girl. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" She then hung back a little and waited for them to leave so that she could lock up.

David furrowed his eyes at first, not remembering hearing about a late fee at all. But he nodded anyway. "Oh, okay. That's understandable." he simply said, moving Brooklyn on one side so he could get to his wallet, pulling out the appropriate amount he owed. "Sorry again. Got held up at work..." he apologized again, handing the girl the money. "Won't happen again, I promise." he said again, grabbing his daughter's attention again with a smile. "Come on, Brooky, why don't I buy you an ice cream to make up for being late?" "Yeaaah!" Brooklyn squealed, squirming in her daddy's arms in excitement before hugging him again. "Wuv you, daddy!" David chuckled, kissing her again. "I love you too, Brooky." he nodded to the girl who was just about to lock up the place, and smiled to her. "Thanks again. See you tomorrow?"

"Again, it's fine," Madison said as she took the money from him and placed it in the cash box that was kept in a back cabinet. She nodded her head politely as he attempted to apologize a second time. She wasn't sure why he felt the need to do so. It still didn't change the fact that she was running late. She couldn't help but roll her eyes as she overheard his promise to buy his daughter ice cream. Oh yeah, like giving your kid sugar before dinner is going to just magically solve everything.....typical, just typical..... "You're welcome. I'll see you tomorrow." she said with a tiny sigh, trying to keep her opinions to herself. The last thing she needed was some parent reporting to her to the other teachers and saying that she was rude. Eager to finally leave, she slammed the door to the cabinet, causing a box full of art supplies to fall off the top and scatter all over the floor. Oh great, can this day get any worse? She immediately got down on her hands and knees and began to pick up the various pieces of construction paper.

David was just about to head out the door, with Brooklyn now on his shoulders, when he suddenly heard a crash come back from the classroom. He turned to see the art supplies splattered all over the floor. The first thing that came to his mind was to help the girl of course. Even if she didn't seem like the most pleasant being. After all, she stayed back to watch his daughter, the least he could do was stay back and help pick up the fallen supplies.
David set Brooklyn back on the floor, leading them back inside the classroom. "Hang on Brooky, I'm gonna help clean up real quick." Brooklyn nodded, following him over to the seemingly pissed off girl where David immediately bent down to the floor and began grabbing each of the fallen construction papers. "Here, let me help you." he had said, before he leaned over to grab some of the paintbrushes which had fallen as well.

"I'm fine. I don't need help." Madison said as she struggled to pick up the hundreds of crayons. She was perfectly capable of cleaning up her own messes. She wasn't an incompetent slob in desperate need of assistance and resented the fact that someone felt the need to step in and say that she couldn't do things herself. Yeah, it was a bit of an over the top assumption, but her train of thought was very limited when the male species was concerned.
Sighing at the broken crayons, she glanced over at Brooklyn and then Brooklyn's father. "Seriously, it's not a big deal. I made the mess, therefore I must clean it up. There's no need for you to postpone your plans to stay behind and help me." He had promised his little girl ice cream and would probably use this as an excuse to get out of it. While she didn't think that the ice cream was the best idea, she'd be damned if she was used as an excuse for a father's broken promise to his child.

David paused a moment, as if trying to let what the girl said sink in a little bit. Why would she reject the offer he had given? Why would she even want to stay even later than she had to just to pick up the fallen mess. Normally, people would have thanked David for being so sweet and helpful. Apparently though, this girl was a different kind of person.
"It's fine, really." he insisted, picking up the last bit of paintbrushes before heading over to help the girl with the scattered and broken crayons. "After all, you were kind enough to stay and watch over my daughter. It's the least I can do, really." he tried saying again, glancing over his shoulder then to see Brooklyn toddling over to help pick up the crayons as well. "Faster we clean...faster get ice cream?" Brooklyn cutely asked, tossing a few unbroken crayons back in the box. David only laughed softly at his daughter's question, nodding in agreement then, and continuing to pick up the last bit of art supplies.

Despite being annoyed at the turn of events, Madison's heart warmed at Brooklyn, causing a huge smile to spread across her face. She couldn't turn down the help of an innocent little girl. "Awwwww, thanks for helping me, Brooklyn," she said, finishing up the crayons and picking up the last few magic markers. "And tell your daddy thank-you for his help too." As much as she hated to admit it, his reason for helping her did make sense. She had done him a favor and the least that he could do was repay her, even if it did annoy her a little.
She finished putting away the magic markers and breathed a tiny of relief that the mess was starting to fade away. "Here you go Brooklyn," she said, opening up a nearby drawer and pulling out some stickers that said "Number 1 Helper". She peeled off one and handed it to her. "That's for being such a big help."

Brooklyn beamed with gratefulness. "Yous welcome!" she squealed, grabbing the glue sticks off the ground next, before turning to her daddy with the same smile on her face she gave to the girl. "Oh! Maddie say tank you too, daddy!" David chuckled, rubbing the back of her head and kissing it gently. "Aw, thank you, baby girl." he smiled back wider, leaving Brooklyn with giggles when he kissed her. David turned back to the girl, his smile not fading even slightly, especially when she handed Brooklyn the sticker. "Ooo~! Cool!" she squealed, grabbing the sticker and immediately sticking it on the chest of her shirt excitedly. "Tank you, Maddie!" she hugged her. David continued grinning, mouthing a small "Thank you" to the girl, who's name seemed to be Maddie or something of the sort.

"You're very welcome, Brooklyn," Madison said as she wrapped her arms around her. She hated the nickname Maddie, but she allowed her students and other young children to call her that. The only other exception was her sister Morgan, who was emotionally still a child. Even if Brooklyn hadn't been told to address her as "Maddie", she still wouldn't have corrected her. Hers was a tough face to say no to.
She nodded her head over at Brooklyn's father as an acknowledgement for his thank-you. "What a very polite daughter you have." Her mother's done a really good job...... Based on Madison's upbringing, that was the easiest assumption that she could make about Brooklyn's kind personality. She bent back over and picked up several pairs of scissors. To her relief, they didn't look damaged. She already owed the school a few new pairs of crayons, thanks to her anger. Although if it weren't for his lateness, she would probably wouldn't have slammed the door so hard. Nope, she would be in the classroom, hard at work studying psychology. Her face broke out into a huge frown as she thought of the work that she'd had to make up.

Brooklyn widened her smile when Maddie hugged her back just as warmly. When she let go then, she returned to her father's side who had just finished up picking up the last of the markers. He scooped Brooklyn back up in his arms, and kissed her forehead gently. "Yeah, she's something alright." he said, chuckling when Brooklyn started nuzzling closer and tighter in her daddy's arms lovingly. "Wuv you, daddy." she peeped. "I love you too, sweetie. Come on, lets get you that ice cream I promised you." he said, about to head out on the girl, but turned around once more with a smile playing up on his lips. "Thanks again, um..Maddie?" he said with a questionable expression, only hoping that he got her name right. He waited another minute before heading out the door finally and back to his car getting Brooklyn settled in her seat first.

Happy that she could finally leave, Madison picked up the box and put it away as carefully as possible. She attempted another polite smile at Brooklyn before putting on her coat and grabbing her purse. The cutesy daddy-daughter talk was really starting to get to her. Okay, you love your daughter, we get it.....congrats. Maybe you actually pay child support too.....good job. She had the door locked and was headed towards her car when the rest of his statement started to sink into her head. "It's Madison," she said, heading in his direction. "The children are allowed to call me Maddie, but I would much rather prefer it if you to refer to me as Madison. Better yet, you can call me Miss Bowers. That should make things even easier."

David had just gotten Brooklyn buckled and settled in her seat when the girl from the classroom suddenly approached him. Luckily, her voice didn't seem too angry, so he was happy for that. Still, from the way she told him, he still felt bad for calling her the wrong state of name. "Oh, I'm sorry...um, Miss Bowers. Won't happen again, I swear." he apologized, holding up his right hand promising. He was just about to turn back around to his car when another thing popped in his mind. "Oh. I'm David, by the way." he quickly added, holding out his hand for a proper greeting.

Madison smirked at him, amused that she had managed to get him to call her "Miss Bowers". The only people that ever called her that were high school teachers and college professors. By the time she got to know them, however, they began calling her Madison. She was mostly joking with him and hadn't expected him to refer to her as "Miss Bowers", but it amused her that he did. "Glad to hear that it won't happen again, David" she said, shaking his hand in return. "I'll have to hold you to your word."
