For once in her young life, Beverly came sauntering in the Coffee shop alone. No boyfriend, no twin. Quite an odd sight to see coming from her, yes. But she figured it was time for some alone time. She was getting to that stage where she was just getting over being with her twin brother 24/7. It was annoying, really.
As usual, the coffee shop she entered was nearly empty, and she walked up to the counter to order her usual strawberry smoothie, sipping on it numerous times before getting too comfortable at a nearby table. She slipped out her phone after another sip, texting back a message to her mother explaining where she was at. She thought about texting her boyfriend a few times, but decided against it. All she really wanted today was some alone time away from the family and friends. She wanted to do something new, something different. She wanted to meet some new friends in the neighborhood. Friends that aren't guys, like the ones she had now. She didn't really know where to start though, she thought the mall at first, but she figured she'd save that as a last resort, and start at the coffee shop to do some people watching, which was like a hobby she enjoyed doing.

It wasn’t hard for McKenzie to learn how to get around town. After her family had gotten settled in she spent most of her days roaming around town, seeing new faces that she might meet in the future. Today was no different, McKenzie had overheard two women talking about the Mud and Grind coffee shop the day before and she wanted to check it out.
Kenzie was a bit surprised to see the coffee shop nearly empty when she entered. She always thought of coffee shops as a cool hangout place. Guess things are different here she thought as she walked to the counter and ordered a hot chocolate. As she blew over her cup of hot chocolate, McKenzie examined the room. There weren’t many people here so most of the tables were empty. She never liked sitting at a table by herself; it made her feel like an odd ball or something. She settled with the table where a girl was sitting. She looked about the same age as Kenzie, if not older, which made her feel better about sitting with her. Kenzie slid into the seat across from the girl, a huge smile on her face. “Hi, I’m McKenzie. Is it okay if I sit here?”

Taking sip by sip of her strawberry smoothie, Beverly scanned every body that walked either past or through the doors of the coffee shop. Unfortunately there were more bodies passing by rather than entering. From what she saw, only three other people had come in after her. While she was checking her phone for any missed texts, she nearly jumped slightly at the sudden voice coming from across the table she was sitting at. Tilting her head up, Beverly found a girl looking about her own age smiling back at her. "Oh, sure, go for it." she encouraged, with a wider grin on her face. "I'm Beverly. Nice to meet you, McKenzie." she nodded, rather than did the proper thing and shake hands. She wasn't too into that sort of thing anyway.

McKenzie nodded back in response. She sat there quietly for a minute before she spoke. “So… how old are you? I’m fourteen.” She told her then took a sip of her coffee. “My family just moved here not to long ago and I’m gonna start going to Riverside high school; as a freshman.” She rolled her eyes when she said the last part. Her older brother and sister always told her how badly freshmen get treated in high school, and since this was her first year in public school McKenzie wasn’t too excited about it.

"Oh, you are? I'm fourteen too." Beverly replied, already sounding so intrigued by this small talk. "I'm a freshman as well though, so don't worry. It's not as bad as you think it is. I have an older sister who's a junior there, as well as my brother who's in the same grade as me. Well, twin brother that is." she giggled, taking a small sip of her smoothie keeping a light grin on her face.

McKenzie’s smile grew wider “Oh, thank god.” She giggled “Now I already kinda know someone” she added then took a quick sip of her smoothie. “Hey, I have an older sister who’s a junior there too, and an older brother who’s a senior.” She pointed out; the fact that she and Beverly had so much in common made McKenzie smile. “A twin brother? Aww, I’ve always wanted a twin. Do you guys act alike? Do a lot of stuff together? Wear the same clothes?” she asked quickly. It took her just a second to think about her last question “Wait. You don’t answer that last one. Sorry” she said, shaking her head as she laughed at herself.

Beverly laughed at her first comment. "Seriously, I know right? You're probably like, the first friend I'll have that isn't a guy." she giggled, grinning and nodding at her later response. "That's cool." she smiled, "Well, we used to act the same. Sometimes still do actually, when I'm not being a girl that is." she chuckled, "Whenever we're together though, we normally either just chill on the couch, play video games, or are out in the forest climbing trees and exploring." she explained to her. "We haven't really been all that close lately though. Like, the older we get, the more we try to get away from each other, sometimes."
