Any rational person would be inside. Any rational person would have taken one look out the window. They would have seen the torrential down pour, heard the ominous thunder that accompanied the lightning as it streaked across the sky and realized that now simply wasn't the time to take a walk. Of course, this was all disregarding the fact that it was well past the witching hour and fear had never once promised to be rational.
Claire's boots splashed through the water as she scurried across the street, ducking further into the collar of her coat as if that would block out the blare of a horn that chastised her untimely crossing. All around her, the late-night wanderers of the night gave the harried girl odd looks as she murmured to herself. Predators that lurked in corners decided that tangling with an apparently unbalanced girl like herself, however pretty she was, wasn't worth the risk. Oblivious to it all, Claire carried on, trying to brush away the fear that clung to her as spiderwebs would, persistent and just as hard to get rid of.
She couldn't tell you where she was going had you asked her. She wasn't entirely sure herself. All she knew was that her boots moved of their own accord, directing her through the sleeping city toward safety.
Claire lifted her head, exposing her face to the stinging rain while wind lashed tendrils of sable to her forehead. She stood like this for a moment, blinking the frigid water from her eyes before, with a decisive puff of breath, she chose a direction and carried on.
When she finally came to a stop, her eyes travelled over the scenery before her. In the darkness and to her spooked mind, it seemed as though every shape were reaching for her, ready to jump at her.
Claire lifted a shaking hand and rubbed at her eyes, unwittingly smearing a line of ‘waterproof’ mascara down and across her cheek. For a long moment, she stood there, slowly turn in a circle. She hadn’t the foggiest idea of where she was nor did she know where she was going.
All she knew was that they rain water was beginning to seep through to her bones, leaving her with a chill far more real than the one the nightmare had left.
“Well fuck me sideways.” She murmured the expletive and looped both her arms around herself.
