FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
[style= text-align: center;]Welcome to the Riverside, an online all human role-playing forum!
If you have a question, please refer to these FAQ's to see if it has already been answered:
What is this?
This is an online role-playing forum that takes place in the fictional city of Riverside, California located in the USA.
Is it based on the actual Riverside, California?
No, it is not. The town's namesake came from our staff during a brainstorming session. The California part came later.
What do I do?
You basically role-play your characters living in the town of Riverside. This can include them making new friends, attending college, starting a career, falling in love, etc. Use your imagination! ;)
What the heck is MABtown and why does it have such a weird name?
MABtown is the role-playing site that several of our members used to be a part of. It was similar to this site, only the town was called MABtown, or "Make A Baby Town". We're not really sure how this is supposed to be pronounced, so just act like it's normal, okay?
Once it was announced that the Make a Baby application was shutting down, we decided to create this site as a way of "starting over". Several characters and story-lines on this site originated on MABtown, which is why it may be referred to on occasion.
What happened to MABtown?
In reality, we just decided to move on and start a new site. In the fictional RP world though, MABtown was hit by a hurricane, which forced several families to split up and some to relocate to Riverside.
This site looks like other role-playing sites I've seen. What's different?
Then: MABtown was the largest and one of the first role-playing sites from the MAB application. While there were other similar sites, our MAB Role-play site was very largely used and recognized with the application developers. The active admins felt it was appropriate to move to a new url due to the Make A Baby application being shutdown. This has allowed us to role-play in many different ways and does not limit us only to MAB characters and scenarios.
Now: First and foremost, unlike most role-play sites out there, we are a single account site! Yes, this means all of your characters are RPed on one account. Secondly, we have NO character limit or word count requirement! Third, there is NO application process for new characters! Lastly, NO activity checks! Though, we do occasionally clear old inactive accounts. (those who have no posts and have not logged in for a few months) Sound different enough for you? While some role-players enjoy those rules/limitations, we tend to attract those who seek less demanding and more serene environment.
Plot Wise: We don't have catastrophes or mysterious events like some other sites, but we do have friendly members to create your own interesting plots with! You have the ability to create your own events for everyone or a select few people to join in . The site is set up like a city with houses you can move your characters into and locations they can interact with each other in. Occasionally, depending on requests and demand, we will have site wide events you can participate in.
What is "karma"?
Karma is kinda of like the "like" button on Facebook. If someone posts something that you like, you can "exalt" them. It can also be used just as a way to show someone that you appreciate them.
It can also work like the mythological "dislike" button on Facebook. If someone posts or does something that you don't like, you can "smite" them.
Where can I get my own house?
See THIS thread for housing rules and requests.
How do I update my profile/signature?
Click the button under the site banner and then click the "modify profile" link. Whala!
For signatures, you would just need to scroll down to the box that says "signature" and make the desired changes.
Make sure you save your profile after making any modifications!
How do I post a photo of my characters on here?
Upload the photo to a photo-hosting site (some great hosts include Photobucket, Tinypic, and Imgur). It will give you something called an image code. Copy and paste the image code in your post and your photo will show up. If it doesn't have an image code option, page the image url in between [img][/img] tags.
How do I get a picture in my signature?
Click on the button in the top toolbar, click the "modify profile" link, and scroll down to the signature box. UBBC can be used in signatures, and the code for an image is [img src="imageurlhere"]
Please visit THIS thread for more information on signatures and other graphics.
Nobody will RP with me! What do I do?
When you are having trouble getting threads, there are a couple things you should do. First of all, you should try and find the reason why you are having issues, yes?
- Do you have good grammar/spelling?
- People don't like to role-play with those who slaughter the English language. This may be a tad bit harsh, but it is the truth. Work on this and you'll surely do a lot better on the thread front. - Are your characters developed well?
- A well developed character will get a lot more action than one with only a paragraph for a profile. People like to know what they are getting into when they start a thread with someone. - If so, are they interesting?
- Again, pretty harsh, but people have to be interested! How do you expect them to want to thread with you if your character has nothing interesting about them? This works the same way with characters who are too damaged or too interesting. Remember, Mary Sues and Gary Stus are no fun! - Do you have a tendency to disappear frequently?
- If you have a record of falling off the face of the earth just when things get interesting, people will know. Would you want to RP with someone like this? It's inconsiderate and annoying. If this is the case, maybe you should try writing on your own rather than role-playing here/ - Are your posts really short?
- This works the same as spelling and grammar. Writing a well thought out paragraph or two and getting a sentence in return is a huge turn off for most RPers. Try to match their posts, put a little more thought into yours, etc. and things will hopefully turn out better. - Are you motivated?
- It happens to all of us! We get busy, bored, or even lazy. The most important part is having the drive to accomplish it! Check everyones characters, think up an entertaining plot, and present it to the person all wrapped up and pretty! Sometimes you have to make the first move! Don't be afraid to approach them or wary of the outcome. Worst case scenario? The say no. It happens, it sucks, but you pick yourself up, dust off your clothes and move on to the next person!
We have a couple of tools to help you with this process:
- Try posting a thread on the Introductions board.
- Visit people's character directories in search of singles/friends.
- Check for open threads or post your own!
- Post in the cbox.
- Message members! (But do not harass them!)
- Lastly, Be PATIENT! :)
