Lauryn nodded simply, glad he got it. Lauryn thought she heard Kasem laugh unexpectedly then, but it was hard to tell because of her hearing aid giving her slight troubles again. Although she did hear his next question to her. "Oh, um...well I really love dancing. I just came from my dance class actually." she told him, motioning down to her bag beside the table. "What about you? What do you like to do?"

Kasem shrugged, "I'm not really good at sports... I just like watching TV and hanging out with my older brother..." He muttered. He fiddled with the edge of his plate, still seeming shy.

"Oh. Well, dancing is the only sport that I do." Lauryn explained simply, still keeping full eye contact even though he wasn't. "What's your name?" she suddenly asked, her head tilting to the side a bit. "I'm Lauryn."

Kasem finally looked up at her, extending a hand as if he had been trained to do so. "I'm Kasem." He told her simply. He bit his lip, still seeming nervous but also seeming to warm up to her finally.

Lauryn looked at the hand extended to her, and took it in a small shake. "Nice name." she smiled warmly. "So...are you in summer school or something?" she asked again, hinting over to his backpack and books beside him.

Kasem looked down at the book and then sighed. "No, I'm a bit behind so my mom is making do extra work." He told her, sounding just as upset about it as he looked. He was still slouching in his chair, a frown seeming stuck on his face.

"Oh. Well, what sort of stuff is she making you catch up on? Maybe I can help." she offered, her smile looking just as soft and friendly as before. "I'm pretty good at almost all subjects. Which one do you have trouble with?" she asked again, her head tilting slightly at her curiosity.

"English..." Kasem replied, opening the book back up to his page where he had done only one problem. "It's just annoying... I wanna be a normal kid, you know? Not have to do homework all summer." He complained, biting the eraser end of his pencil.

Lauryn sat up in her chair and leaned over to get a better look at his workbook. She noticed his handwriting was much sloppier than her own. Although she wouldn't say hers was the best either, but it was still better than his. It was like he had dyslexia or something. But that never crossed her mind, seeing as she didn't even know what that was. "Well, I do see that you have trouble with spelling. That's my favorite part of English!" she told him rather proudly after pointing to a careless spelling mistake he had made.

Kasem twitched and nodded, flattening his bangs as if it would help him hide his face. "I do..." He muttered. He played with his pencil, spinning it around lazily on his fingers. "I'm bad at spelling cause I have dyslexia." He explained.

Lauryn's eyebrows furrowed deeply as she looked strangely back up to Kasem. "What's...Dyslexia?" she asked, repeated the word carefully back. "I don't think I ever heard of that before..." she added in honestly, and leaning over the table interested.

Kasem shrugged, "Mom says it means I mix up my letters." He made a discontented face, "I just think it means I'll never pass a spelling test..." He grumbled just loud enough for Lauryn to hear.

"Oh." Lauryn said simply. But she laughed softly at what he said about never passing a spelling test. "Well I can help you with that! I think I can, anyway.... If you want my help, I mean." She continued adding in, not sure if she was scaring him off yet or not.

Kasem shrugged, half as enthusiastic as he normally was since he had to do school work during the summer (and Thongchai was ignoring him again whenever he spoke Thai, but that was besides the point). "Sure." He told Lauryn, finally sitting up in his seat and leaning on his arms. "But like... it's not really that I have trouble, I just don't notice when I spell something wrong." He tried explaining, not really sure even he knew what he was talking about. "Honestly, I think I just don't pay enough attention. But since the extra tutoring helped, mom's convinced it's dyslexia."
