But when Lucy got adopted not long after, the distance between them just wasn’t working out for either of them. Family: Because of Max’s brain damage and memory loss, he does have a hard time remembering the day he lost his family. Luckily enough though, he managed to hold onto the page in the newspaper from the exact day with the exact story of what happened. The title of the article is as follows: “Avalanche Causes Twenty Deaths in Nearby Cave” with the caption underneath reading, “Only One Body Was Found Alive...A Young Boy Of Eleven” You can clearly guess that young eleven year old boy was Max, no doubt, even Max knew that. That’s when even the slightest of memory started to trigger Max’s mind of what happened that day. The rest of the article then explains vaguely about the family and what had happened.
The family had been on a vacation together for the holidays, and were snowboarding together right before the avalanche hit. They figured that the cave near them would be safe enough while the avalanche passed, but they were wrong. Having lost their boards in the fallen snow, as well as two of the eldest boys, the parents quickly led their youngest further in the cave, keeping close together. That’s when rocks began caving in, nearly crushing the family. Fortunately, there was a light up ahead forming a small exit hole. Unfortunately, the hole was only big enough for the young boy. It had took a while before the boy was persuaded to get out of there, but again, rocks began caving in. The boy had barely made it his nose above the surface, managing to catch enough air to keep alive. Unfortunately though, the parents were not so lucky. The rocks and boulders had fallen on top of them and crushed them to death. As soon as the helicopters and paramedics arrived, they unburied the young boy, still unconscious, and flew him straight out to the nearest hospital where he woke up with wires and bandages wrapped all around him. Most of the wires and bandages were around his head, where the doctors found to be the most damage done on the young boy. Big enough it seemed that a large rock had knocked him out, but the damage being small enough to earn him a very mild case of memory loss.
So after about a week or so in the hospital, Max was finally recovered enough, and was sent to an orphanage, due to the fact that he had no other guardians to look after him. It took him a while to adjust, but after six years, Max was finally adopted by his first and current family. The Fosterlings.
