My grandfather was in the military. I never met him though, he died before I was born, when my dad was only thirteen. From the stories I've heard, I know without a doubt that he was a good man. Everything my family says about him is positive, and he really reminds me of my dad in many ways. Sometimes, I step back and realize how lucky I am to have my dad. Not because of the money, or the celebrity status his line of work entails, but because of what an amazing person he is. You see, many years ago my father was the lead singer in a band that became very famous here in the United States. These days, he actually runs his own record label that specializes in local bands here in Riverside. Where I'm going with this is, the money our family has, and my father's job makes people think I'm some spoiled little rich girl. The curly blonde hair doesn't help much either. Nobody really see's the girl behind the dance uniforms and lip gloss. This is why I am thankful for the people who actually know me, and my family.
Julian Mayes is my cousin, but he also doubles as my best friend. He's got to be the sweetest guy I know, and he definitely has the biggest heart. Ever since we were little, we did everything together, when we weren't attached to our parent's hips, that is. You see, Julian didn't have a dad, and I didn't have a mom. Now, Julian has his adoptive father, Tad, who is the funniest adult I've ever met. His mother, my Aunt Molly, has a huge heart and heartwarming smile, and boy do her hugs make you feel at home. My cousin Emilie, Julian's half sister is all quiet smiles and bookworm most of the time. She keeps to herself usually, but get her on sugar? She's a powerhouse.
Then, there is my step-mom Azalia, we don't talk very much. To be honest, I think she feels threatened by my existence, but I don't blame her for feeling that way. She hates my mom, who can hardly be called my mom to begin with. But I am what ties my dad to her, and Azalia doesn't like that very much. She's good with my little brother and sister Micah and Hayden, though, for which I am thankful. Micah. I love my little brother with all of my heart. I would go to the ends of the earth just to make sure he's happy. Hayden is only four right now, about the age I was when my dad met Azalia. Sometimes I wish Azalia and I were closer, because I see how loving she is with my siblings, and I want that too.
My uncle Mason used to have a really cool job, albeit dangerous. He was a professional motocrosser/stunt man, but he quit after a bad accident that almost killed him. Now, he's a chef. I enjoy going over to his house. It's right on the beach, and I mean right there. It's always a plus that her cooks me awesome food. My aunt Cybill tells me stories sometimes, she was such a badass. She and uncle Mason met at a skate park and hit it off right away, which I think is cute. I think my dad's friend Abby has the best story though. She met her husband while drunk on a bridge, then jumped. By a chance of fate, Shane ran into her the next day, and was a complete ass to her. But after that? History. The way they met, and how mean he was to her is kind of sad, but they are happy now and that's all that matters. It kind of scares me though, because they have two kids, and Shane is in the military. I babysit for Abby whenever I can, when she needs a break, or has something to do. Sometimes I just go over there to keep her company. I feel for her, because I can tell that it's really hard for her to be alone so much.
My uncle Eli, who is actually my second cousin, is alone. I find it sad that he still doesn't have anyone to call his own. Sometimes I wonder if his parent's death really screwed him up that much. There are times when the look in his eyes is so depressing, that I just want to give him a huge bear hug. But, he doesn't really do well with physical contact these days. I've caught him looking at his best friend with this wistful look in his eyes, and it makes me question why. He usually just plays stupid and tells me that it's none of my business anyway when I ask. I don't know the girl very well, but she's pretty, and looks happy, so maybe that's why he never said anything.
