Monte pulled into the park and let the car run. Her words hit him hard, but there was nothing he could do about what was already done and as she said he couldn't lie to her. He knew any reason he gave her was going to sound stupid and untruthful. "I don't know." He said to fill the space. "I don't think highly of myself and trying to be in a relationship with a girl I really care about doesn't seem to work out." He avoided her eyes, not wanting to administer a low blow to her personally.

She couldn't help the tears that trickled down her cheeks. Aya sniffled softly and shook her head. "I wasn't the one who got a girlfriend because you thought I was dead." Ah. Low blow. Why do we do this to each other?
She wrapped her arms around herself and shut her eyes, more to stop the tears and calm down than to keep herself warm. Aya picked up the quilts and undid her seatbelt as she moved to open the door. She turned to him and smiled slowly, "Come on... The stars?"

Monte felt the blow hit him in the stomach, but let the hurtful retort die at his throat. He watched her carefully wrap her arms around herself and wanted to be the one doing so, instead he was constantly pushing her away instead. He smiled back at her, weakly, but got out of the car as she requested and followed her into the park. He took one of the blankets from her folded it onto the ground, creating a double barrier between them and the ground, but giving them less space to lay down. "I'm sorry." He said, settling himself on the twin sized palette. "If I'd known my letters weren't getting through and that you were writing me and yours weren't getting through, I'd have waited until the end of the earth for you. I'd have kept my mouth shut when I saw Serena in the park and I never would have gone off and done the other..." He closed his mouth, maybe it'd just be better for them if he stopped talking. He leaned backwards and stared up at the sky.

She settled beside him; the other blanket carefully folded around their legs. Aya knew they were supposed to be looking at the stars but she turned so she could look at him. "It's the past Monte... We can't change what we've done..." But inside all she could do was spit out apologies. I'm sorry I didn't fight for you. I'm sorry I ran away with Dan instead of being there for you. I'm sorry I love you when I shouldn't. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry....

Monte licked his bottom lip at what she said and shook his head. He could apologize over and over again and he thought he had, but somehow his past transgressions would always come back to haunt him. It wouldn't matter if she said it was alright and that she forgave him, his actions were awful enough and he didn't really blame her for not truly forgiving him, for always throwing them back in his face. He was relieved that she settled in beside him and not at all upset that she was blocking his sight from the stars. "Why does it upset you so much? You've got Dan? Why does it matter what I do to myself?" He asked, keeping his voice even. "You don't want me anymore do you?" He added softly.

For some reason, his gentle words were what broke down her walls, crumbling her defenses as she curled into him. Aya moved her hand to cup his cheek as fresh tears found its ways down her cheeks. Her voice was hoarse as she whispered, "I will always want you." Her thumb lightly brushed against his cheek bone. "I... I love you Monte. Always have, always will." She gasped at her sudden confession and pulled away as if she was burned. She wasn't supposed to feel this way. She had Dan; and yet she was relieved.

He watched her face change before him and he half wanted to drag himself off and die in a hole somewhere for doing anything remotely hurtful to her and then the tears started to fall and he nearly cracked beneath them. Her words glued him back together, he was no longer a numb being whose only temporary satisfaction came from mindless one night stands and the misery of others. She was the only person on the planet that could make him feel like he mattered. Her thumb brushing across his cheek, painted over his many cracks and her words acted as a kiln, hardening the exterior so the cracks would no longer show. "I love you Aya." He said, moving so that he was now looking down at her, cradling her in his arms, cementing her into place so she couldn't turn away from him again. "I have no meaning without you, I need you, or I lose it..." He stared down at her as he trailed off and then lowered his lips to hers, no longer feeling the need to hold back.

She whimpered as his mouth closed over hers; her tears continued to stream down her face as she wrapped her arms around his neck. There was no turning back from this. This action made it final and instead of raging guilt and sorrow, all she could feel was relief. A relief beyond words because she no longer had to deny that Danian was different from Monte. Dan was wonderful and amazing beyond belief, but he never had the power to strip her down to her barest feelings. He couldn't hurt her and love her at the same time.
She pulled away to gasp for breath, a tear-choked sigh escaped her lips as she closed her eyes. "Don't let me go again you idiot. Don't ever let me go again."

Monte smiled down at her, wiping the tears from her face. He hated those tears, he didn't like that he'd put them there and he hoped he'd never be responsible for their formation again, though with their history, it would only be a matter of time before he made her cry again. "I won't, I won't." He pecked her lips and then simply held her. "W..what about Dan?" He stammered, he'd do whatever he had to do to be with Aya and if she didn't want Dan out of the picture, he'd deal, he'd make the jealousy disappear from his heart if it meant he could have her.

She groaned and curled into his embrace as the guilt finally began to set in. "I-I don't know." Aya sighed and pulled away as she sat up and ran a frustrated hand through her growing hair. "I need to stop kidding myself; Dan was-- is great. He's sweet and understanding, incredibly funny..." She turned to Monte, her eyes meeting his. "But he's not you. He was never you. And I tried to ignore that; bury all the hurt into a new relationship so I could at least feel more than a broken heart. But I understand now. It;s just going to hurt everyone more if I stay with him. I can't care about him the way he cares about me." She sniffled and wiped at her tears. "Danian Arthur is a great guy. But he's not the guy for me." It'll always be you.

Monte was OK with 'I don't know' as long as she said they could still be together, but his musings on this note were soon lost as she sat up. He wanted to pull her back down to him, to have her back in his arms, but her words broke through to him. He let her finish or at least what he thought was her finishing and then he sat up and wrapped his arms around her again. He found he had nothing to say, he didn't know how to make her feel any better about her decision. He was certainly happy, but wasn't sure signs of ecstasy would be rewarded in this turn. "Should we..." He took a breath and collected himself. "Should we just take tonight to examine the stars until you can talk to Dan...?" In all honesty he wanted to celebrate, to consummate the reunion, but if keeping her meant waiting until loose ends were tied up, he'd wait.

She let him pull her back down, the surprise clear in her eyes as she smiled at his suggestion. "There he is. The gentleman I knew was hiding all along. Where have you been all this time?" Ayame chuckled softly as she kissed him briefly. "Yeah... I really..." Her cheeks flushed and she used the time to examine the starlit sky so she could avoid his gaze as she spoke. "Want to jump your bones right now but I also know that I need to talk to Dan about this. It isn't fair to him you know?" She couldn't help but smile as she glanced at him. "Thanks Monte. You really are the best."

Monte shook his head as she spoke. He knew he had a kind bone in his body, it was simply easier to lock it up and be an asshole so he wouldn't get hurt, apparently his plan hadn't worked, he wound up hurting himself more often by screwing everyone over. He turned his head toward her entertaining her brief kiss. It certainly felt nice to genuinely care about the girl next to him again. He watched her cheeks turn pink and smiled at what proceeded it. He wanted her too, there was no denying it and for once in seven months he didn't act on it and oddly enough he was happy with the promise of something to come. "I'm not nearly as great as you." He said, turning his eyes heavenward. "You've just saved me from myself." Another month of his antics and he would have undoubtedly done something far more idiotic than sleep with some trashy bimbo.

Aya smiled and pulled away, now content to simply curl up next to him. She pulled the other quilt higher up to their waists as she looked heavenward where the stars glittered and sparkled in the pitch darkness of the night. Aya knew that everything wasn't perfect yet. She was cheating on Dan and it felt terrible but she knew that deep down everything would be okay.
"Look at the stars, look how they shine for you..." Aya softly sang the familiar Coldplay song, humming when she couldn't recall the words.

Monte turned his head to face her again as she began to sing, he didn't know all the words to the song, after all Coldplay wasn't on his top must listen to bands. Aside from the familiar lyrics she started to sing, he only knew one other string of lyrics in the song and waited until he was certain they should be sung. "You know you know I love you so, You know I love you so." He was sure he butchered the tune and laughed at himself.
