Spencer watched him, turning a little more so she could see him properly. She laughed when he spoke those words, he really had a point there, and the acronym wasn't bad either. She often could be classified as that herself, even though she really did try not to most of the time. Spencer felt herself loosening up the more she talked to him. Normally an insulting name like that would have set her off, and caused her defensive walls to close in around her. "I was not tight lipped!" She said, a smile on her face. "For all I knew you could have been some creep. I've got to defend myself somehow, don't I?" Spencer looked down and back up again, holding out her hand. "I'm Spencer." She offered.

He grasped her hand and shook it; he knew he was supposed to let go afterwards but he was loathe to do it so he gently held her hand instead. "Hmm. Spencer... You look like a Spencer; though I confess I think I like calling you Spitfire more. I hope you don't mind." It was a surprise that Joseph was even talking this much. He wasn't shy like his older brother, but usually he was just too lazy to even try starting a conversation with people, especially girls. Since most of them had a habit of just hitting on him because they knew his family was loaded. He hated that.
For some reason, he found it a great achievement that he had made her laugh. Seph nodded at her, meeting her gaze with his dark blue eyes. "Yeah, yeah you were tight lipped don't deny it." He chuckled softly; a bit annoyed at the husky sound that came out. He quirked a brow at her and smirked. "Do I really look like a creep to you? Now be careful with your response; I take offense easily", but the merriment that shone in his sapphire eyes said otherwise.

Spencer couldn't help but notice that he didn't let go of her hand, but did nothing to pull her hand away from his. She let out a light laugh. Spencer didn't mind if he wanted to call her the given name instead of her real one, who knew if she would even see him other than that night anyway. "No, I don't mind in the least." She was surprised that she was even attempting a conversation with this guy, especially when he'd had her angry just moments before. She had no idea who he even was, and found herself wondering just that.
She shrugged, a small smile playing on her lips. Yeah, she had been tight lipped, but she'd had no reason no to be. She looked him over when he questioned her, her eyes traveling up his body slowly, finally stopping at his face. No, definitely not creepy in the slightest... "Hmm..." Spencer began, "Not necessarily." She leaned in a little closer her eyes fixed on his, her voice getting quieter, "But, it's always the attractive ones you have to worry about."

An amused sort of smile curved his lips as he met her gaze and held it. "Good, because I confess I have a bone to pick with you about something..." He tilted his head as he continued to look at her; she was the type of person that you could pick out from a mile away. Her hair assured you of that but aside from that Spencer had this sort of aura that said Don't touch me unless you want to get burned. But it wasn't spiteful, it was more of a... Come at your own risk type of thing and Joseph found that immensely fascinating.
"Now I know you said that music isn't ours and we shouldn't judge it and I confess that I'm the democratic sort of fellow that I would agree with you. But even criticizing music is given right? Musicians play so that people can hear it and tell them what they think of it. Right? And of course some people are going to dislike it... I mean come on, have you really met anyone who likes that Rebecca whatshername's Friday song? Anyone?" He waggled his eyebrows teasingly at her to show that he wasn't there to pick a fight, just to clear whatever had offended her out of the air.
Joseph moved closer when she did and dropped his gaze, his brow still quirked in a haughty fashion. "Are you implying something with that statement, Spitfire? Or are you just being a tease?" He lightly squeezed her hand and smirked.

Spencer eyed him curiously, she wasn't quite sure what it was about Seph that made her want to...stay. It wasn't just that he was good looking, no. He'd managed to change her opinion about him in such a short time. He made her think. Maybe he wasn't the arrogant guy she had thought him to be in the beginning. Something about him called to her, made her want to figure him out.
"Do you now?" She asked innocently, an inkling of a smirk forming on her lips. She nodded in agreement as he spoke, a laugh escaping her at the mention of Rebecca Black. "I find it hilarious that people can become famous just by posting a video on YouTube." She said, rolling her eyes. "I mean, in her case, everyone criticized her so much that she is now a world-wide freak show. But, with that song, I can only believe that was her intention from the beginning." She thought for a moment, a grin forming on her face. "I'm sure there are some closet fans, most likely teeny boppers." His eyebrow waggling caused another chuckle to make it's way up her throat and she shook her head. "Rebecca Black was a freak accident gone wrong, I'm sure of it. But, I guess you're right, criticism can only be expected when it comes to music."
When he moved closer though, the humor left her green eyes. Spencer swallowed, her eyes dropping to their joined hands. She flipped her hair over her shoulder, tilting her head slightly. She pursed her lips before a smile formed. "We'll have to wait and see now, wont we?" She said coyly, looking back up at his face.

He nodded and grinned, glad that Spencer understood where he was coming from. "And that is why, in my opinion, you have good taste." Seph motioned with his head at the vague direction of the band before shaking his head. "Most people our age? They don't even know who wrote that song." He shuddered at the thought of someone actually appreciating that Friday song and frowned as he seriously looked in Spencer's eyes. "Please tell me that was some sick joke or I might have to jump off of the nearest 4 story building. I didn't think our world could sink so low as to respond to such an attention-seeking preteen."
Seph finally released her hand, albeit reluctantly as she baited him with her coy smile and her beautiful green eyes. He did, however, move to gently tuck a stray lock of her crimson hair behind her ear before returning the smile. "Now how long are you going to have me wait for that? Patience isn't really a strong suit of mine." He offered her a boyish grin, one he knew could melt even those with the stoniest of hearts. Flirtatious smiles and arrogant smirks were all well and good but that cliche boyish grin? It really could work wonders.

Spencer's eyes brightened the more Seph spoke. She found it uncanny the sheer amount of things they seemed to have in common. She was actually having a good time, standing in the middle of the bar, just talking to him. She was having more fun than she'd had in a very long time. She covered her mouth as she laughed at his joke. Spencer slowly found herself warming up to him and his great sense of taste and humor.
She couldn't believe it when he pushed her hair behind her ear though, she she actually felt something. Her heart beat faster in her chest, and his close proximity caused butterflies to flutter in her stomach. "We'll have to test my resolve then, huh?" She finally managed to get out. The boyish grin almost rendered her speechless, it looked so good on him. It should have been illegal for him to do that, because she could have pounced on him right then. "You know," She began, "I find that song to be... very erotic. I think it may be the bass, or maybe the drums."

He smiled at her as he took a step back. "See? Now that's beautiful; I don't care about what other people say: plastic surgery, botox, makeup... Blech." He made a face before meeting her gaze. "That smile? Blew everyone else off the map." Seph waggled his eyebrows playfully again; it was an honest compliment. He wasn't trying to flirt with her; it was actually an honest to god miracle that he was even striking up a conversation with anyone- let alone a girl. But Spencer didn't seem like a shallow, vapid, golddigger. She was actually one of the most human people he had met in a very long time. And that trait alone made him want to stay and get to know her.
He chuckled softly, that throaty sound again. "We can test your resolve all you want but at the end of the day, it's my patience that will give out." Seph's brow rose of its own accord and he took a step closer to her. It had been ages since Joseph had physically been attracted to any girl but this one... She knew all the right buttons to push. He laughed again, softly... "Oh? You haven't heard sex music till you've listened to The Deftones' Change." Seph couldn't help but be increasingly curious about this spitfire girl; she was pretty, seemed to have a brain, could keep up a decent conversation and had a great taste in music... "So is it wrong of me to assume that you are a musician? You definitely sound like one."

They way he complimented her made her face heat up unnaturally and a smile spread across her face as she looked down at her feet for a moment. What the fuck?! I do not blush. Before she could freak out too much, though, he continued speaking. She really hoped her sense of judgement wasn't failing her tonight, and he would be like everyone else. If Spencer were honest with herself, she would admit that she was already becoming attached to Seph, even though he technically was a virtual stranger. Spencer tried to never get attached because that was how you got hurt.
When he chuckled, Spencer bit her lip, watching him. Maybe when he finally lost his patience, it would end up being a good thing. Though, with the way things were going, it very well could have been Spencer herself who caved first. When he stepped closer to her, his scent assaulted her senses. She released her lip and her lips parted slightly. "I have White Pony sitting on my shelf at home." She told him, a smile forming on her face at the realization that they had yet another similarity. "I'll have to go home and pop it in later." Spencer nodded at his question, he was right to assume that one. She was indeed a musician, and she was kind of proud that he could tell. "Yes, actually. I am." She told him, "I play the drums."

He nodded; he had been pretty sure when he asked. A normal person would have mentioned that they liked the song because they could dance to it, because it was 'happy' or whatever. But a musician would have noticed the notes, the underbelly beat of the bass or the fueling rhythm of a guitar. Seph's smile widened. "Yeah I thought so. I play the bass myself... Well and the cello. I started with that."
He paused and stared when she mentioned having the CD. Joseph shook his head in disbelief and laughed. "You are a miracle girl, I swear it spitfire." He watched her, searched her eyes for a sign of... anything. Anything that would discredit her as the amazing girl that he found her to be. And he found nothing; though he did realize that they had been standing by the exit of the club for a while and he groaned. Where had his gentleman-like behavior gone? Once again, he could picture his father's disapproving stare in his mind's eye. "Do you want to go sit back down? I'll buy you a drink." He paused; realizing how pick-up line-y that must have sounded and shuddered. "I don't mean.. I... Ah..." He chuckled in embarrassment, passing his hand over his face before groaning in defeat. Only a few people could make him tongue-tied. It seemed Spencer would have to be added to that short list.

Spencer's eyes widened with his mention of the cello. She couldn't imagine him playing such a calm, yet hauntingly beautiful instrument. He seemed more playful than that, though she did give him props for it. She had always thought you had to have a lot of patience for the more classical geared instruments, whereas the drums, she was able to beat the hell out of them. "The cello?" She asked, more in a rhetorical manner. "That's really cool." She gave him a warm smile. Spencer thought the bass thing was hot, but she had no intention of making that known just yet.
Spencer gave him a grin. "What can I say?" She said, "I'm one of a kind." A small laugh escaped her lips when he became flustered, messing up his words. Where did the confident guy go? She found it rather cute though, and just smiled. Spencer just wordlessly took his free hand in hers and began walking back to the bar, glancing back at him. "Hmm," She teased, "No need to get all flustered there, Joseph. I'm just a girl."

Joseph nodded at her question, though it was a rhetorical one. “Yeah. My dad was a cellist in a jazz band and he was the first person I ever heard play. I was hooked when I was little to those jazzy blues bands… I guess that was one of the biggest things that he inspired in my life; my music. I think I was 8 when I first started official lessons; I was much younger when he taught me the basics of the basics.” He paused and smiled at the memories; it had been months since the passing of his parents and he had learned to let it go… It didn’t hurt so much to think about them anymore, but it didn’t mean that it didn’t hurt to think of them still. He missed them terribly. Seph chuckled softly and glanced at her, “I didn’t expect to be good at it but I kinda am. I’m not bragging or anything… I’m actually going to Julliard now; it’s pretty tedious to take trips back and forth but New York is boring without family anyway so I spend most of my downtime here.” He paused; surprised at how much he had managed to tell her about his life in that short span of time. Seph wasn’t known as the talkative type; that was more his sister, Jackie’s thing after all. “I’m not very good at the bass; I’m still learning after all. You should hear my older brother play…” He nodded in appreciation at the thought of Xander playing. The man was a humble one, but he really did have skills.
Seph shook his head at her comment before nodding in agreement. One of a kind, that Spencer was. She was the proverbial needle in a haystack; the girl who thankfully was able to pull him out of his doldrums and keep him on his toes. He said nothing when she took his hand and pulled him back to the bar; he took the vacant stool beside hers and smirked. “Ahh, well it seems the spitfire has otherworldly powers; enough to get me flustered. Trust me, that doesn’t happen too often.” He managed to tease back as he ordered a drink for himself before asking her what she wanted. “What would you like? And to be honest, it’s just that… My father was one of those sticklers for gentlemanly behavior you know? I could almost picture his disapproving face in my head, especially when I ticked you off and you left the bar and then when I realized we were just standing there.” Joseph shook his head and offered her a sheepish smile.

Spencer quietly listened to him speak with rapt attention. Usually when she was around a guy, she would just nod and pretend to listen to what they said, making as little connections as possible. But, with Seph somehow it was different, she wanted to know. It was strange and new, a little crazy, but welcomed. She admired the way he seemed to look up to his father, a small smile forming on her face as he told her about how he had picked up the cello. Her story was far different from his, though. It was more bitter and happened when she was at the lowest point she could ever be. A scared and lonely fifteen year old girl, who had no idea how to be free. Had no idea how to let go of all of the things that haunted her. Her eyes widened in surprise at the mention of Julliard. Of course she knew what Julliard was, it was only one the most prestigious music school in the United States. She never had dreams of going there though, because she knew just how far out of her reach it was. "Julliard." She said, shaking her head, "Wow, You must be amazing, Seph." She looked down, a frown forming on her face before she let out a rueful laugh. She looked back up, "The only thing my father ever taught me was when to act like I had passed out from the beatings." As soon as the words left her mouth, though, she closed her eyes tightly, shaking her head. "Sorry, I-" She hated showing how vulnerable she could be, and cursed herself for even bringing it up.
Thankfully she grabbed his hand and dragged him back to the bar before he was offered a chance to say anything about her comment. She just hoped that would be the end of it. A small laugh escaped her lips, though with his comment. Spencer tried to shake of that bitter feeling that encased her every time she thought of her drunken excuse for a father, and forced a small smile on her face. "I'm capable of a lot of things," She quipped, her eyes lighting up with that familiar mischief as she watched him. "I'll just have the same." Spencer said, gesturing to the drink that had been placed in front of him. A genuine smile formed on her lips at the mention of his father though. "He taught you well, then." Spencer herself wasn't used to being treated like a lady, you didn't really find that in the bar scene. She found that this was actually a nice change of pace, and she might be able to live with it.

He chuckled softly at her compliment; if blushing wasn't such a feminine action, Joseph's cheeks would have been dark red. "Please, I'm not that great; when you play for that long and you have something to play for... The music just kind of comes out and it makes sense..." He paused and laughed, knowing what he had just said probably didn't make a lot of sense.
The split second of silence that passed between them was enough for him to react to her statement. "WHAT?" His voice rose a few decibels higher than normal (though no one noticed since the club was in full swing by then). A sudden swelling of pure and unbridled rage filled his entire being as he tried to meet her gaze. His eyes darkened, his brow furrowed and his mouth was no longer smiling but rather, it was set in a grim line. "Your father hurt you?" He didn't mean to sound so menacing but the tone that came from his mouth was one that could make Hitler cry. Seph's full attention was on Spencer now but he couldn't hear what else she had said. All he could think about was that fathers were not made in this world to hurt their children. He didn't notice until now that his fists were tightly clenched and his arms were shaking as he tried to calm down. Slowly, Joseph flattened his hands against his jeans and took a deep breath. "Sorry, I know it's none of my business." And it wasn't; it really wasn't. He barely knew this girl but for some reason, he was insanely protective of her.

The smile fell from Spencer's face and she looked down at the bar top, her eyes focused on the swirling lines of the polished wood. Even the wood had scars, just like she had. But the imperfections in the wood only made it more beautiful, unlike the ones that marred her skin and reminded Spencer of the life she lived every day for fifteen years. She gave him a minute nod in answer to his question, an almost unnoticeable gesture. With a small sigh, she looked back up at Seph, finally meeting his gaze. "I brought it up, so it kind of makes it your business, doesn't it?" She said softly, offering a sad smile. Her father was a drunk, a man that wasn't worthy of living to see another day as far as she was concerned, and her mother was just as bad for letting it happen. Hell, for all she knew he could have driven himself into a ditch since she left and she would have been none the wiser. Nor did she care about the man and what he did with his life now that she was no longer part of it. "I've broken eleven bones." She told him, "The first was my arm, the ulna. I was four, and they said I fell down the stairs. We never had stairs in our home." Spencer shrugged, placing her arm on the bar top and resting her chin on the palm of her hand. Part of her found how angry Seph seemed be upon learning of her father's abusive ways endearing, the other wondered why. She was just some girl with a bad attitude that he had just met, in a bar of all places. "My father was a drunk who liked to take out his every aggression on me. I learned to stop fighting back and just give in." Her use of the past tense only meant that he was only dead to her, not dead to the world, no matter how much she wanted him to be. "That was, until I ran away."
