Good friends, good family, average school grades. Spring break came and it was a family tradition to go camping. Just Cody, his older sister, and parents. The camping went great, the hike was fun, food wasn’t too bad. It was just the drive back that was the tricky part. It was pouring rain with lightning and thunder to go along with it, and as usual Cody and his sister decided then to pick on each other. Cody was just barely fourteen, a lonely freshman in high school, so it was easy to pick under his skin. Their father was driving, his eyes not leaving the road no matter how unruly and loud the kids got. Besides, their mother would smack the both of them every now and then.
They still had another half hour drive to go, and the rain was pouring harder than ever. And the lightning wasn’t helping much either. All of a sudden, a flash of lightning came striking down towards them, hitting a tree causing it to fall in front of them, just missing the car. Cody’s father managed to swerve off to the side avoiding the hit, but unfortunately the side he drove off to was over a mountain side, having the car fly into the trees, killing the driver immediately, and giving his mother a severe concussion. Cody and his sister were luckily just badly injured, his sister having a few possibly broken ribs.
Fortunately there was a rescue team not far from where they were at, and were able to take in the three remaining people still alive, and fix them up some. Unfortunately for Cody, since his mother’s concussion had grown, it was likely she wouldn’t be able to take care of her kids for the damage done to her was now permanent. As far as his sister went, she certainly had broken ribs they had to mend immediately, but again, it wasn’t enough. The doctor’s found some internal bleeding in her heart, and sure enough she died. Cody was the only one who survived, with just mere scratches, bruises and a broken leg and finger. As soon as he was cleared off and ready to head out of the hospital, it suddenly hit him that he had no place to go, no one to take care of him. So he was sent off to the nearest orphanage in hope that someone with a good enough heart would come. And they did. When Toni heard his story, being the softy that he is for kids like this, he signed the papers without any hesitations and brought Cody to his house already full of kids.
