Past: After Ms. Kita’s first marriage fell through, she took GenShi to Korea and taught English. While there, Ms. Kita met a co-worker, and they began dating. He took good care of GenShi, and loved Ms. Kita greatly. They soon returned to the United States and got married.
HeuSeoh was born soon after. GenShi loved having an baby brother, and HeuSeoh loved being surrounding by his family. However, a little less than a year after HeuSeoh was born, his father received his green card. He began getting violent, and Ms. Kita wouldn’t tolerate it. After he hit her, she snuck out and got divorce papers. However, when she presented them to her husband, he got furious, turning on the children. GenShi managed to get away unharmed, but after violently threatening HeuSeoh, the young boy was put into the hospital, and was diagnosed with Shaken Baby Syndrome. It was then Ms. Kita put a restraining order on her now ex-husband, forbidding him to ever see her or her kids again.
Although the doctors could not make any confirmed diagnosis at the time HeuSeoh was in the hospital, they noticed his eyes seemed a bit more cloudy than they should have been. When HeuSeoh reached school age, they found out he had monochromacy, which meant he was completely colorblind (can only see black and white). Although he didn’t know any colors when he could see them, HeuSeoh holds on greatly to faint memories of when he could see colors (for example, he knows and can somewhat understand the grass is green, the sky is blue, yellow is a lighter color than blue, etc).
He didn’t face too many problems growing up, but sometimes, his colorblindness would get him in some “trouble” (His first girlfriend broke up with him because he kept missing her changing her hair color). During grade school, many of his teachers thought he might have ADD (or ADHD) but it turned out, as a ten year old HeuSeoh once explained, "Grade school (was) just boring."
Growing up, HeuSeoh wasn’t too interested in learning about his Korean heritage. In fact, because of his hatred towards his father, he would often try to shun it, pretend it didn’t exist. However, when the family went to Korea one summer to meet Junsu, everything changed. HeuSeoh realized what he had been missing, and decided to begin learning Korean from his new older brother. Since then, HeuSeoh’s only been getting better at speaking Korean and learning about Korean culture. He also likes using it in front of Morgan just to impress her.
