Avery put his arm around her and started toward her apartment door. "No, I do want to do this, I want her to like me and I want you to feel better about all of this." He squeezed her gently. "I'd do just about anything for you in order to make you more comfortable and happier and no matter how terrified I am of your mother, this has to be done. I'm leaving in five months, I trust Tally to take moderately good care of you, but your mom needs to help you too."

Gracie nodded as he said he wanted to do this. She licked her lips listening to him and smiled, he really did love her, which she knew, but it made her feel better that he wanted her to be as comfortable as possible. She smiled again, "Alright. Thank you, though, I don't take it back. I'm glad you want this..." With that she took his hand and headed toward the door. She opened the door and led him inside. Tally was home now, and their mother was still there. Gracie let out a sigh and looked over at her mom and then at the clock. It was six right now, so they weren't really doing anything and Gracie cleared her throat.
Karissa looked up, "Yes?" she asked sharply, glancing at Avery, but not acknowledging him. "Mom, I brought Avery home. You two have never been properly introduced, but this is Avery, your future son-in-law. I want you to get to know him a little..." Karissa looked Avery up and down and sighed before she got up off the couch and started toward the kitchen in search of a glass of water. Gracie sighed and followed her in, "Mom, I'm serious. I'm having this baby whether you approve or not and Avery is the father. I don't see why you can't just sit down and talk to us for a while. We have a plan, I don't know what you're afraid of." Karissa looked back at her elder daughter and sighed. "Fine," she said. "But I'm not promising to be nice." Gracie nodded and licked her lips, "As long as you know that if you insult him before we've had a chance to explain our plan I'm leaving and I won't be back." Karissa looked at her daughter again, trying to see if she was bluffing. Gracie wasn't sure if she could live up to that threat, but she would try her hardest, and she didn't let the doubt show on her face. "Sit, then," she said, pointing toward the kitchen table.

Avery hated how quickly her mom got up and was against even being in the same room as him, but he kept his mouth shut and stood still until he was told to sit. He was nervous, but he was determined to sit and talk with this woman in order to make arguments between Gracie and her mom less frequent. He was glad Gracie was standing up to her though he wasn't sure what her plan was if her mom insulted him and she left. He didn't have a place for her to go yet and sure, he could sneak her into his house for a few nights, but that wouldn't be enough time to get her another place. He could get her a hotel room, but that didn't sound like something that would last long. He followed Gracie into the kitchen and sat down next to Gracie.

Gracie licked her lips and looked at her mom, "We have a plan..." Karissa cut her off, "So let's hear it, son, you seem so eager to prove yourself or Gracie's eager for you to do it, so I want to know exactly what you think." "Mom, please, let me expla--" "I want to hear your plan from him, if that's alright with you, Gracelyn," she said sharply. Gracie swallowed and looked down at the table, knowing she couldn't argue with her right now, there wouldn't be any use in that. "So how about it, Avery? How do you plan to take care of my daughter and the unborn child you've created?" she asked, daring him to say something.

Avery looked to Gracie and then sat up a little straighter. "First..." He paused, he wasn't sure if he should tell her he was going to buy them a house, she might have a problem with that and then he realized she might have a problem with everything he was going to say. "I'm going to look for a small place for Gracie and the baby, I have enough money in my savings account to put a hefty down payment on it so the monthly payments won't be high. I'm going into the Air Force in a few months and my paychecks will be sent to Gracie for anything she may need, food, doctor's appointments, you name it she'll have it." He found Gracie's hand and squeezed. "While I'm gone Gracie will be able to use my car and I'll have her on my insurance before I go." He started to feel uncomfortable. "Look, I love your daughter, I'd lasso the moon and disrupt the Earth's tides, flood the worlds largest coastal cities if she asked and I'd to the same for our child. I work hard to obtain my goals, this baby wasn't apart of my plan and I'm ready to do everything in my power, short of going to federal prison to make sure she is happy and not wanting for anything." He looked down at the table. "I know money can't buy happiness..."

Gracie swallowed as he started and looked over at him, nodding, trying to reassure him of something, or urge him in the right direction or something like that. She licked her lips and looked at her mother. Karissa was listening to him, but she didn't look amused, she didn't think that he could honestly do all of this and make it work. Maybe he loved her now, but she knew that in a few months after he was in the air force he'd figure out that he didn't like leaving all the time and he'd want some extra company while he was away. Gracie squeezed his hand back as a way to let him say he was doing this right. Karissa looked him over when he had finished talking, her arms crossed over her chest. "Alright. If you've got this all figured out then how do you plan on raising a family while you're gone away in the military? Raising children is hard enough, but doing it alone is near even more difficult." She shook her head lightly, "I don't approve of this at all, but I'm going to give you a shot. If you let down my girl or her baby..." "Mom," Gracie interjected sternly. "You have no right to threaten my boyfriend, alright? He's going to do his best and like he said, we didn't plan this." Karissa sighed, "Just don't let me down." With those words she stood from the table and disappeared into her bedroom.

Avery stared her mother directly in the eyes. "I won't let her down." He was sure of it, he could never hurt Gracie, he'd hate himself too much if he did. He wasn't sure he could guarantee not to let her mom down though, it just seemed inevitable. "I..." He looked to Gracie, completely unsure how it had gone. "What now? You think I convinced her?" He whispered, stunned.

Gracie licked her lips at his question, "I don't know. I don't think you've convinced her, but I think she'll warm up to you. Now that she's met you formally its only a matter of time. She'll love you. She has to. No one hates you," she said softly. She then smirked, "Well except maybe Donna," she said, speaking of the waitress from their very first date. "You were basically staring at her chest. She probably hates you."

Avery laughed and pressed his fingers gently over her mouth. "You are not going to help my case missy." He took his fingers away and kissed her lips softly. "She could be pressing her ear against the door right now, just looking for evidence that I'm going to disappoint you." He smiled and kissed her again. "And I wasn't staring at her chest." He chuckled. "I don't even remember her, how is it you do?"

She giggled lightly, "Oh please, she'd be able to tell I wasn't serious. There's no way that I was being serious in that statement." She shook her head at him, but took his kiss happily. She laughed again at his question, "I remember her because the man that I fell in love with happened to be watching her on our first date. We also talked about fish sex if you recall," she said. "Although that was my fault, wasn't it?"

Avery laughed. "I have no idea." He sat back in his chair and relaxed a little. "This is going to sound horrible, but I really don't remember that first date at all." He folded his arms across his chest. "I remember taking you up in a plane and eating a picnic lunch with you, but I just don't recall talking about fish sex, regardless of who brought it up." He looked toward her mom's bedroom door and then back at Gracie. "Would she be mad if we went to your room?"

Gracie giggled and shook her head, "No, not that date. The first one. The one where we went to eat at the burger place. I think that counts as our first date. Technically you took me out and then took me 'home'. Well, kind of. You took me to the beach house..." She licked her lips and looked down. She hadn't thought about that beach house being gone now. She looked back up with his question and shook her head, "She shouldn't be. That doesn't mean she won't be, but I don't care. We're getting married and we're having a baby, she can get over it." She started toward her bedroom glancing at Tally on the couch, who gave her a smile. Gracie smiled back and got to the bedroom before she closed the door behind them.

"Oh, you're talking about the first time I ever took you anywhere." He shrugged. "I kind of remember going to the burger place, you were wearing my clothes, but I don't remember Donna." He was playing with her now, he remembered the waitress, he just didn't really care to remember her. "You were extra pretty that day." He played with her hair as they went to her room. He glanced in Tally's direction as he pulled on one of Gracie's curls. "I couldn't have planned that day any better." He let go of her curl and walked through the door, she closed it. "I wish there would have been some scrumptious male waiter that I could tease you about instead of this 'Donna' that you keep referring too."

Gracie giggled and rolled her eyes, "Yeah you do. You remember Donna. Her boobs were shaped really weird and I wasn't wearing a bra and I was wearing all your clothes, you're right. Boxers included." She smirked and giggled again as he was playing with her hair. As she closed the door she smiled. "I'm glad that day went the way it did. If not we might not be together now," she said with a smile. "No, you'll never catch me because you'll never find a waiter that I'll look at more than I look at you."

"Well darn." He gave up. "I guess I'm too good looking for my own good, huh." He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her gently, then got down on one knee so he was eye level with her belly. He knocked very gently on her flat stomach. "Hey you in there, pick up most of my genes, so you'll never have to worry about the girls looking at some hot waiter while you're on your first date." He kissed her belly and stood back up. "He's well informed now." He kissed her lips and looked around her room. "Wow, different."
