Xander grinned, honestly agreeing with what Collins had said. He shrugged off what she said about arrogance though, she didn't seem like it. "Everyone has that bit of cockiness about something; and besides, character flaws are inherent in people; we'd be boring if we were perfect you know? I like you the way you are anyway." he muttered the last part softly. He slid back into his seat and sipped at his coffee, a huge smile on his face as she enjoyed her coffee. "You like it then? I'm glad, and no we haven't met before. I'd definitely remember someone like you if we did. Maybe in a past life?" he teased as he drank more of his coffee but a bit slowly, knowing that with the end of that cup, would come a close in his time with Collins for the day.

Collins smiled and found she didn't have anything else to add to the conversation. She listened to him and grinned as he muttered his approval of her. She sipped at the chocolate concoction and watched him over her mug. "You know I like you the way you are too." She couldn't help herself. "You seem like one of those quiet guys, but I'm sure deep down you like to talk all the time huh?"

Xander couldn't help it, he blushed and he had to look away. It was embarrassing for him to be complimented so honestly by a pretty girl like Collins. "U-uh, thanks Collins.", he muttered softly as he sipped a bit more of his coffee. He had to smile a bit at her assumption though, she was spot on. "Yeah, you found me out huh? My family really can't understand why I clam up around strangers but I can be just as loud and obnoxious as Jackie when I'm with my family. I guess it just goes to show that there are a lot of sides to people... Jackie insists that the 'real me' is the one I am with my family but I dunno... What do you think?"

Collins contemplated him and his question. "I'm not really sure. I mean you've been fairly talkative with me, but I'm sure you're louder and more talkative with your family. I'll just have to see how you are around my friend Chelsea and then how you are with Jackie." She grinned. "You said I'd like her, so if we hit it off, you know I'll get to see you around her and possibly the rest of your family too."

Xander thought about it for a second as his lips touched the rim of his mug. "Yes, I think I am more talkative with my family. It's not that I can't speak when spoken to, though I used to have a lot of trouble with that before. I just don't know how to start conversations with people I don't know, and I tend to over-think things, which is never a good thing." He said with a shake of his head. He smiled a bit though when she mentioned her friend. "Oh I think I'd like her from what you've said. Besides, I think you're a good judge of character so it'll be okay." Xander hoped with all his heart that she would hit it off with his sister because for some strange reason, Jackie was really good at figuring a person out and if she liked Collins, that meant it was okay that he was definitely starting to feel more than just-friendly with her.

Collins set her mug down and stared at him. "So basically if I hadn't acted a fool over there and then come over and told you off for laughing at me, I never would have heard you speak?" She ran her finger over the top of her mug. "I sometimes have a hard time starting a conversation and maintaing small talk too."

He chuckled and thought about it. "Well... I'm not sure but maybe.." Xander sighed softly, sobering up. He downed the remains of his coffee, feeling at a bit of a loss for words as he realized the end of their coffee mean the end of their conversation. He set down the mug and smiled at her. "Well I'm glad I'm not alone in that then... My sister actually calls this 'the improved version', when I was little I couldn't even speak when spoken to. Hence why my mom used to call me a turtle." He said with a shake of his head.

"Awe, turtle. I like that name." She grinned. "I can actually see you retreating into your shell as you're posed with a question." She smiled. "What exactly made you stop me?" She asked, finishing off her coffee immediately after asking. "That doesn't exactly sound like turtle type behavior."

Xander looked mortified and dearly wished she wouldn't start calling him turtle; it'd kill him inside. He laughed a bit though as she continued. "Yeah that's basically what happened, though when I was much younger, retreating constituted hiding behind my mother. They were always so confused as to why I was so quiet and shy. I mean Seph, my younger brother, is quiet because he doesn't like talking to people, not because he can't. And my two sisters are confident and loud and stuff." He shrugged. "I was like, the odd one out in the family." He looked at her and then looked away quickly, preferring to put his gaze on one of the ornate wall decorations in the coffee shop as he spoke in a small voice. "Well... I saw you there practically mortified with embarrassment and I didn't want you to be alone in it... I don't know why..." Xander looked at her and offered her a tiny smile. "But I wanted to help you."

Collins smiled. "Thanks for not leaving me alone to suffer in my mortification." She laughed. "Well if Seph was quiet then at least you weren't completely alone. Sure maybe he didn't run, but still it's not that odd. Do you still hide behind your mom when spoken to?" She scrunched her nose up. "Because that would be a little odd."

He tilted his head and smiled. "You're welcome." Xander thought about his little brother and made a face. "Seph's a bit of an ass actually, not in the normal way either. He knows when to keep his mouth shut and is pretty tactful but if he thinks you aren't on the same level as him, he won't speak to you." He shook his head and sincerely hoped that the move to Riverside would change him somewhat. Xander looked away at the mention of his mom and sighed wistfully before glancing at him. "I really wish I could hide behind her still..." A heavy sigh escaped his lips. "She died last week so..." It wasn't that he couldn't stand on his own but he would have given anything to still have someone to run to, to see his mother laughing at his shyness, to kiss him on the cheek and tell him that it would be okay.

"Oh goodness." She said, blushing profusely. "I'm sorry, I completely forgot." She gave him her best apologetic look and felt really bad about it. "I'm almost afraid I'm not going to be a very good teacher if I can't even remember details of a short conversation.

He smiled kindly at her and gave her hand an affectionate pat. "It's alright Collins, sometimes I forget that she's not around anymore you know? I always expect her to suddenly arrive through the door or something. I know it sounds silly but well..." Xander trailed off and stared into his empty cup before his eyes found the hands of the large clock he had been looking at earlier. "It's getting late... Do you want to head out?" He didn't really want to leave yet but seeing as how it was late and it was a school night, he didn't really want to get Collins into trouble. "And I'm sure you'll be a great teacher Collins."

Collins glanced at the clock on the wall and nodded. "Yeah we should get going." She grabbed the notebook she was scribbling away in before. "Here's my number." She said handing him a piece she ripped out. "Don't be afraid to call ok?"

He received the slip of paper with a small smile as he stood and grabbed his things. "I will, and I hope you see my sister tomorrow so you can tell me if she's just as crazy as I imagine her to be." Xander chuckled and stood by their booth, waiting for her.
