Avery licked his lips and looked away. "I didn't say cut her out forever Gracie girl." He felt awful now and pushed his chair back. "Come on." He put his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. "I'm sorry, she can treat you like shit all she wants and I won't say anything until it starts to affect my kids." He kissed her head again and gave her a tight hug. "Now I'm going to shut my mouth before I start affecting my own kids by stressing you out. Let's go see your mother."

Gracie sighed as he apologized and leaned into him. This was a ridiculous argument, and she knew the only reason it turned into so much was because her hormones were going crazy and running wild all around. "I know that you're only saying this because you care about me, but you've got to let me decide what to do about my mom. I promise to make sure she doesn't stress me out too much, but I can handle it, okay?" she asked lightly, trying to be gentle. "I'm sorry that I'm easily agitated, but I can't deal with my mom not liking you and you not liking her. At least not openly. If you still don't get along by the time the babies are born, then you can complain about her all you want." She kissed her boyfriend lightly on the cheek. "Let's go."

Avery shook his head and just agreed with her. "Fine." He let her go and started for the door, running upstairs to grab his keys and his wallet before starting out to the car. He told her he loved her and then drove to her apartment without another word. He didn't want to question Gracie's ability to tell her mom when to stop and he didn't trust himself to keep that to himself if he opened his mouth. He put the car into park and unbuckled his seat belt. "I'm not going to speak unless spoken to, I don't trust myself right now and I love you and I feel like I've already offended you."

Gracie unbuckled her seatbelt after they reached her house. She looked at him as he spoke and sighed. She turned to him and took his hand in hers. "Ave, you didn't offend me, okay? If you were anyone else, I would be offended, honestly, but I know you. You want to protect me, and I know that, I understand that. You feel like you have to protect the people you love, it's your military mentality, that's why I know you'll do great in the air force." She squeezed his hand lightly and looked down at their hands. "It's just sometimes you need to let me protect myself, or just not protect me at all, despite what all of your reasoning is telling you. You mean well, I know you do, but this is my battle. I'll call for reinforcements when I need them. As soon as I do, you can take the reigns and do whatever you need to do."

Avery thought she made sense with the need to protect but he wasn't sure he knew how to not protect her even when she said no. He took a deep breath and opened his car door. He got out and slammed the door, not because he was mad at Gracie, but because he needed a stress reliever and something quick before he lost it. Slamming his car door wouldn't hurt anyone, though after he did it he was sure it migt of scared her. "Sorry." He mumbled, as he opened her door. "I can only do so much right now to protect those babies and once I'm on that plane for basic that's it, I can't do anything else except sit and pray that your mom leaves you be, that Monte will step up and do just about everything he can until I come back, and that's it, so sorry if I seem overly protective." He wasn't screaming or raising his voice but the legitimate concern was coming through every syllable. "I can't carry them, Gracie, I would if I could and if you say you can stand up to your mom then fine."

Gracie didn't understand what was happening as he suddenly got out of the car. She jumped and let out a small scream as he slammed the door and she sighed, trying to figure out what it was that she'd said wrong. They were both on edge, it seemed and she just didn't get it. He opened her door and she didn't look at him, afraid that he was still angry with her. Sorry, he said and she looked up at him then. She knew he just wanted the best for his family, that made perfect sense, she just wished that it didn't have to be at the expense of basically losing her mother. "I know, Avery," she said as she got out of the car and wrapped her arms around his middle. "But its not your job to protect them right now. It's my job to protect them in every way possible right now. You just have to wait until they're born, okay? You worry about the house, a place for them to live and be safe in. Let me worry about their well being for now." She let her face tip up and kissed his chin. "I promise you that if I have any difficulty with my mother that turns out to be catastrophic, then I'll let you know very first thing, and I'll move out. I promise you that much."

"That's just it Gracie, I don't want it to get to the catastrophic point, but fine." He let his hands come off of her in surrender. "You say you can do it, I can't do anything but trust you." He let his hands drop and go back around her. He kissed her neck and let his lips linger there. "I'm sorry I keep fighting you, babe, I'll stop." He motioned to the apartment. "Let's go break the wonderful news to your mom. Then I think I'll just go." He kissed her lips. "I have a house to find and buy."

Gracie licked her lips and looked at him. "What if I promise it won't get that far? Listen, I promise I'll leave without a care if it gets much further than it is now." She accepted his kisses willingly and let out a light sigh. "Alright, let's get this over with I guess." She was a little surprised by the last kiss and nodded. "Sounds like a plan. I have some homework to finish this weekend."

Avery kept his mouth shut and nodded before leading her all the way up to her apartment door. He was still frustrated and though her mother hadn't given him any reason to be angry with her today, he could still feel that anger boiling below the surface of his skin, he told himself if she did or said anything that would set his temper into motion, he'd have to leave. He might even have to be in a fight with Gracie for a few days, but his fingers were crossed that she'd be pleasant enough and he could leave the apartment and not want to tear things apart.
