Alegrah shrugged lightly and smiled at his statement. "Yeah, well, it helps somewhat. That's exactly what I mean, though. I'm not rational at all when I'm with you, so that means I was terrible without you." She smiled softly at him and shook her head. "I know I sound like I'm trying to feel sorry for myself, but I'm really not. I just…" She shook her head again and looked away. "I can't function on my own, not well, anyway."
She looked at him with his question, seeing a salesperson, she jumped and pulled him by the arm behind a dresser. "Sorry, I'm just trying to get away from him." She looked at him with his question and gave him a light smile, nodding. "I do, actually. It's just a small one, but I'm dancing. It's only a solo. I haven't found a new partner since the hurricane…."

Wes chuckled a little. "Well, we're both irrational, so that doesn't make much sense, but I guess I'm glad you think I help." I can't function on my own, not well, anyway. Wes didn't believe that was true -- Alegrah was a quite capable woman -- but she seemed to, and he was sorry about that.
Wes nodded, understanding why she had pulled him around the corner, then listened to his response, distracted for a moment from the meaning by the smile. When she completed her thought, however, he flinched. "What happened to Daniel?" Wes asked, though unsure if he wanted to know the answer.

Alegrah shrugged. "Yeah, I know, I guess what I want to say is that when I freak out I can't think straight and then I turn into some kind of paranoid freak." She sighed lightly and moved them again, more toward the back of the store as the clerk came around to where he could possibly see them. She just wanted to talk to Wes, she didn't want the interruptions.
His question hit her somewhere deep inside and she shrugged lightly. She covered her sadness, but it wasn't easy. "There was a hurricane. His family didn't even try to evacuate, they just stayed at their house. He was in his car trying to get out because he'd finally gotten to his car without his parents seeing. It hit while he was on his way. He was trying to get to the highway, which I guess you know is by the beach and he disappeared. I was talking to him on the phone and he just stopped talking…" She shook her head lightly, swallowing the tears that were threatening in her throat. She shook her head again and looked down. "They didn't find him."

Wes wanted to pull her close, but instead just sat beside her. "I'm sorry, Alegrah," he said. "I know you guys were close." He exhaled; the topics they talked about were always too heavy, but it wasn't as if anyone had any control over that. "That phone call must've been the scariest thing in the world," he said, barely more than muttering, because he didn't want to bring her back to it if she wasn't already there. I hope you find a new partner, he thought, but he didn't say that, because it would be insensitive.

The whole time I was crying about him, I wished you were there to help me, she wanted to say, but she couldn't bring herself to say it. She didn't want to make him feel bad, either. She let out a sigh and sat down, letting her head fall over onto Wes' shoulder. she didn't know if he would want that or not, but she couldn't just sit there. It was killing her not to be touching him in some way. She really did miss him and she wished they could just get over everything and stay in their own little world without friends or family, just the two of them forever, no one to tell her she was making bad decisions or crying too much. She nodded. "It was scary… I called the police, but they said they couldn't get out there until the storm passed and by then he was long gone. I kind of pray that he just hit his head and got amnesia. Just living off somewhere in a fantasy that he made up when he couldn't remember who he was…"

Wes felt Alegrah lay her head on his shoulder, and after a moment, he started stroking her hair. Things felt right as rain, if only for the time being. I'm here for you, he thought. "Yeah, even the police don't have superpowers." He bent his head to kiss her forehead lightly. He couldn't possibly have amnesia -- how could anybody forget you? "That would be better, I guess," he said, trying to say what she wanted to hear, although he was sure a missing persons search would have found it by now if that had been the case. "Sometimes I think we all wish we could have amnesia, so that we could start over with a clean slate. If that's what happened, I bet he's doing pretty well." He dropped his arm from it's position to rest around her shoulders, and bent his head to gently rest with hers. "Even so, I'm sorry he can't be here with you."

Alegrah nodded. She knew very well that they didn't. It they did they would've found her dad and forced him to pay for something or at least look her in the face. She felt his kiss and it made her feel better. She knew that he might not know how to act right now or what to say. Hell, neither did she, but she did know that he still cared. She'd accused him of not caring earlier, but now she couldn't imagine why. She guessed it was some sort of way of defending herself and her feelings. She shrugged, "I guess. It's unlikely. Very unlikely, but I want to believe it." She sighed and turned her head into his chest, trying to think of something else to talk about. She nodded at his thought. She couldn't help but think that that's what she wanted to do. "Like right now?" she asked quietly, looking up at him, her eyes searching his for something. She nodded at him when he spoke of Daniel again, but she was done with that. She just wanted to know what he wanted.

Wes wrapped his arms around her, not caring that they were sitting in the middle of a furniture store. "I know babe," he whispered. If he could fix it, he would. "Right now? Only for the past few months," he said. He wanted to forget leaving her here and not letting her know where he was. If he'd stayed, though, he might have gotten caught in the hurricane, too. "Selective amnesia would be nice, though," he said. If he could forget the loss of his parents, for example, but not what they'd taught him, he would. Wes wondered what she was looking for in his expression, but let her look. He didn't have anything to hide. He offered a smile. "Everything but you," he said, but trailed into a brief laugh.

Alegrah let out a sigh and put her head back on his shoulder. She listened to him as he spoke of the amnesia and how it would be good. She nodded, she'd like to forget those things too. She would like to forget about the hurricane, Daniel, her parents, her family, Malachi's suicide attempt, Ali's engagement. She wanted to just let it all go, everything was too complicated. Everything but him. Wes wasn't complicated. She let out a sigh and looked up at him again. "What's our problem? Why can't I just forget what happened between us? It's obviously no ones fault..." She looked up and saw his face looking back down and she couldn't stop herself. She leaned forward and kissed him lightly on the lips, she hadn't been thinking and when her mind caught up, her cheeks turned a bright shade of pink. "I'm sorry..."

Because you've got a nagging feeling that I'm going to leave you again,Wes thought in response, but didn't have time to phrase that more gently, seeing as he knew he did have to leave again soon -- hopefully, it would be the last time he'd be leaving her. Alegrah initiated a kiss, but his lips had just changed shape when she pulled away. "Don't apologize," he said. He brought a hand to her face and lightly stroked her just-pinked cheek. "Don't be sorry, please."

Alegrah licked her lips as she looked down at her feet. She sighed and set her head against his shoulder again, "I'm not sorry, not really, anyway… I'm only sorry because…" She sighed lightly, she didn't really want to admit what she was thinking, but she had to now that she started. "Because I keep thinking that you're just going to leave again. And you aren't going to come back…" She sighed and looked back up. "I can't forget, Wes."

It didn't exactly raise Wes's spirits when he heard that Alegrah was thinking along the same lines. He kept himself from commenting on her lip-licking habit, and just wrapped his arms around the girl. He wanted to comfort her, and he wanted to comfort himself. If she could stay in his arms like this all the time, there would be no problem. "I'm coming back." You don't have to forget. Just...forgive me, he thought, but he couldn't say it. He probably didn't deserve her forgiveness. "Alegrah, you'll have to try pretty hard if you want to get rid of me for good."

A sigh rose from Alegrah's chest as he hugged her to him. She didn't understand, after he had been gone and the whole time thinking that he didn't care, why she was back in his arms, letting him touch her, even if it wasn't really intimate. It was a friendly gesture, the hug, but really, she wasn't lying about her fears. She knew that if he tried hard enough he could get her to do anything, that's just who she was, and he was basically her Achilles Heel. "I know," she said lightly as he said she'd have to work hard to get rid of him. She did know, and it made sense. "Do you want to go somewhere else? It looks like the rain's let up a little…"

“Yeah.” Wes nodded, although agreeing meant that he had to let go of her. He unwrapped his arms from her body, but didn’t let go of one of her arms right away. Wes bent over a little and pressed a quick kiss to her wrist. Maybe that wasn’t appropriate; he wasn’t sure, but it felt like the most natural thing in the world. He leaned back against the dresser, giving her the chance to get up, and sighed inwardly. As much as he just wanted to go somewhere with her and have fun, he was afraid that they probably weren’t done having serious conversations for the week, maybe not even for the day. “So, where did you have in mind?” he asked, keeping his tone light as he looked directly into those gorgeous green eyes of hers.

Alegrah turned her head and started at his face as he kissed her wrist. She wasn't really sure how to react. He'd been gone for so long and now that he was here, she just couldn't figure out what he was doing here or why he'd expected to just show up and not see her. She gave a gentle shrug at his question as he looked back up to her eyes. "I don't know. I guess we can go to Palmer's," she said softly. She was out of her element with him for some reason and she wasn't sure how well this week would go. They still had a lot left unsaid and they needed to get it out.
