"Okay," Wes said, though he didn't know the town and was unsure what Palmer's was. "Is that a restaurant?" He hoped so. Not only was Wes hungry, but he also wouldn't mind being able to take some time to chew and swallow if they were going to continue their...discussion? Conversation? Catch-up? Fight? Crisis aversion? He didn't know where things were going at all, because one second, things felt just like they used to, and the next, everything seemed to have changed. Yes, it had been months, but as much as he'd gotten his schoolwork on track and settled into family life, just hearing Alegrah's voice and the somewhat-masked pain in her tone made him wish that those months had not happened. "Well, you lead the way," he said, still waiting for her to get up. Wes glanced outside again, just watching water droplets fall from the roof of the store onto the sidewalk. The weather was just as in flux as their...discussion, it seemed.

Alegrah let out a light giggle and nodded, "Yeah, it's a diner. They have burgers and stuff, and the best milkshakes you'll ever taste in you life, I swear." She stood from where they were sitting on the floor and slid her tongue out of her mouth to wet her lips a little. She still couldn't get a hold on this conversation, or the entire situation for that matter. She still had a hard time believing that Wes was actually here talking to her. She started to walk, checking behind her to make sure that he was following before she left the store and headed in the direction of the diner where she'd suggested that they eat.

"The best I'll ever taste in my life? Alright, they'd better, otherwise I'm holding you accountable," he said. Wes hoped that they had cookies and cream milkshakes, because he could practically taste one now, and he'd have trouble pushing the thought from his head. Wes stood, putting one hand on the dresser for balance as he did so, glad he hadn't broken anything when he noticed a couple of lamps sitting on top of it. Turning back to Alegrah, he found himself staring as she licked her lips, so he averted his gaze a little. Wes took a heavy breath, then looked up again and followed her out of the store. He sped up a little, so that he was walking beside her, but he had to shove his hands deep into his pockets so that he wouldn't reach for Alegrah's hand or her waist. Realizing that he was still looking down sort of a lot, he pulled his head up and gave the girl a sideways glance and a tentative smile, wishing this once-so-familiar dance weren't so awkward now.

Alegrah gave him a nod, "Swear to god. Cross my heart and hope to die, that's how good they are." She continued down the road in the direction of the restaurant. "Ooh! And you get a free refill. It's kind of the best deal ever. Like, two milkshakes for the price of one." She knew this was awkward and she hated that almost as much as she hated him being gone in the first place. Why couldn't they just go back to normal. He really hadn't done anything wrong, after all, she just blamed the whole thing on him. She was to blame as well, though. Maybe this was it. Maybe they were done for. It wasn't how she wanted it, though.

"I am so tossing you in a lake if the milkshakes aren't as good as you say they are. But damn, free refill milkshakes. How do they keep from going under?" Wes laughed and ruffled his hair with one hand when he realized that it had escaped from his pocket. "Is that it over there?" he asked, pointing to a sign that he couldn't quite read. Wes' phone began to ring, but he silenced it quickly and continued walking.
Sorry so short.

Alegrah let her jaw dropped as he threatened to throw her in a lake. "Okay, look, mister, just because you're bigger than me doesn't mean you get to perform feats of strength when I'm wrong about something!" She let out a laugh, shaking her head lightly. She shook her head again, "I guess because people eat there so often that it doesn't make much difference." His phone started ringing, and he silenced it immediately. She took a breath and shook her head before she looked at him, "You know I'm not going to get mad at you if you answer your phone. I mean, I understand that you're on this trip with your friends... I kind of... intruded, I guess."

"Feats of strength?" Wes asked, mocking her a little, and laughing quite a bit. "Alright," he said. "No feats of strength. But you're the one who said 'hope to die.' I thought that being submerged in cold water would be a much milder alternative." Wes nodded when Alegrah suggested that the milkshakes were intended to make people frequent Palmers often and that the diner still made money because of that. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense," he said.
Yeah, sure. Wes wasn't sure whether or not to believe Alegrah about not getting mad if he answered his phone, but he wasn't going to refute her statement. Instead, he simply shrugged. "Intruded? I'm...kind of the one that crashed my car into you, if I recall correctly. Really sorry about that," he added. "You're definitely okay?"

She laughed and nodded lightly, "I suppose you're right. It would be much better to be thrown into freezing water than to die." She bit her lip, not sure where this conversation was actually headed, but she tried not to think about it too hard. She shrugged her shoulders at him before she turned her face back so she cold look at him. She was still so attracted to him that it almost hurt. He hadn't really changed that much, although, it had only been six months. "Yeah, but I didn't have to come over this morning, I didn't really give you much of a choice in the matter. I could have just called you. What's-her-name wanted to go to that show." I'm sure you'd rather be there than walking around some unfamiliar town arguing with me. She nodded, "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm not going to be mad if you have to answer your phone, pinky swear." She held her pinky out to him to shake so he knew she was serious, she still solemnly believed that the pinky promise was the most binding contract there was.

"I'm glad you came," he said. The anticipation of just talking with her on the phone had been killing him all morning. To actually see her was amazing. The weighted conversations and loaded questions were worth those moments when he looked at her and for a moment, all he could hear was his pounding heartbeat as it raced and then tensed in his chest, skipping a beat. "What's...Meredith? She gets her way often enough. It'll do her some good to realize she's not the most important person to everyone." Even so, Wes figured that Cameron had probably found a way to appease her by now. "I'm glad you're okay. Really glad." This day could have been a true nightmare for him if he had rammed into her car any harder yesterday. Wes laughed and took her pinky in his. "Okay, but I'm still not going to answer it. Whoever it is will call back if it's really important." One way or the other, this conversation was sure to be a pivotal point in their relationship, and he couldn't think of anything else more important.

Alegrah smiled as they got about a block from the restaurant. They still had to cross the street as well. For some reason it made her feel good to know what Meredith was not the most important person, somehow, though, she didn't think she got her way as often as she would like, especially with Wes being so thick skulled. She shook her head lightly, "You really don't know that she likes you, do you?" she asked before she stopped and looked in both directions to cross the street. As she started across she smiled at him, "Okay, but you're gonna feel really horrible when they call back later if someone got hurt and you didn't answer the call."

Wes laughed, because the idea that Meredith liked him really was crazy to him. "No," he said. "I really don't think that she does. I think you're full of it. And please don't shove me in front of a car for thinking that," he added, since they were crossing a road. Sure, Meredith was pretty, but she'd never attracted his attention. She was home base for him, and that was it. She had kissed him once after getting very drunk, but he'd written it off, because he knew that alcohol made people do crazy shit. Wes really didn't notice Meredith's attraction. After all, her liking him had never really started; it had just always been there. "I'm pretty sure Cameron or Austin would've said something at some point if she were into me, you know?"
Wes laughed lightly again. "Yeah, and what am I supposed to do if someone is hurt? I can't exactly save someone unless they're about to get hurt, and even then, they'd have to be, like, jumping off the building right next to us or something. And I don't do deathbeds." Once was enough.

Alegrah rolled her eyes playfully and shook her head lightly, "Fine, whatever," she said lightly as she reached the door and opened it, stepping into the chilly interior of the restaurant. She smiled back at him and raised a brow, "Why don't you just ask her. Or one of them. I mean, if you're so sure about it, what can it hurt? It'll only prove me wrong," she said, challenging him. She was sure she was right. She had seen that look in Meredith's eyes. She was jealous of Alegrah as Wes had left, and maybe it was just a friendship jealous, but she doubted it. She was pretty good at reading people.
She shrugged, "Alright, then, as long as you're okay with the consequences," she teased as she sat down at a booth and nodded her head toward the other side, gesturing for him to join her. "It's just a thought..." She really didn't care if he answered his phone or if he ignored every call that came his way, but she just wanted to figure out what was happening.

"Why would it matter?" Wes asked, his eyebrows pulling together. Wes was pretty sure that it wouldn't cause him to suddenly be interested in her romantically. It'll only prove me wrong, Alegrah challenged, and that made him grin. "Alright, I'll ask Cameron later, then. You should be there, too, and hear it for yourself."
Wes slid into the booth across from Alegrah and placed a menu in front of himself, scanning it for the infamous milkshakes. He shrugged in response to her teasing, but continued to look down at his menu. "Whenever I'm around you and I pick up the phone, I have to leave. That's not a consequence I'm particularly okay with, you know."

Alegrah shrugged, "It doesn't really, I just want to show you that you're wrong," she said with a playful spark in her eyes. She let a laugh escape her mouth when he said he wanted her there. "Why so I can be there to see the look on your face when you realize I'm right?" Her teasing was helping her feel a little better about this. She liked that they were acting this way right after they'd been arguing. It made her feel like everything would turn out fine, even though that might not be the case. She already knew what she want, but she grabbed a menu anyway and looked it over, figuring she might find something else she wanted to try. His words distracted her from that task, however and she stopped reading, looking up to his face. He had said it like it wasn't a big deal, but it was to her. A small smile crept it's way onto her lips and it stayed there, "That's really sweet."

"I was thinking the opposite, actually. I'd like to see the look on your face when Cameron just starts laughing at the idea. But if by some miracle that doesn't happen, I get an ego boost to cancel out my surprise," he said with a smirk. Despite the mutual teasing, Wes was treading carefully, because he wasn't sure how Alegrah would react to being accused of jealousy right now. However, he was positive that it was her mind playing tricks, not his.
Wes shrugged again, looking around for a waitress, but he was glad that she'd appreciated his comment rather than mocked him for being so illogical. He counted to three, composing his face to make sure that he didn't look as embarrassed as he felt for admitting that, and then turned to look at Alegrah. "I've really missed you."
