PJ followed in the same direction, trailing a little bit behind her. "Well, I just arrived here yesterday, actually." he said, biting his lower lip. "So, I haven't had enough time to go around and explore, or talk to anyone around here. Basically, this is my first day out of the house." he shrugged. "Uh, how long have you been here? Didn't you mention that you haven't been here long?"

Sheryl glanced behind her as he spoke, but still made sure to watch where she was going in case they came up to a eating spot. "We've only been here a few weeks." She answered with a small shrug. "I haven't really gotten a chance to explore either. The way we got here was...less than pleasant." Sheryl turned back around, eyes darting left and right. "There's a diner over there if you want. Or we could find some place else."

Is that so? he thought, wondering how their coming to Riverside could have been so unpleasant. However, PJ decided it was probably a better idea to not ask... His attention turned to the diner that Sheryl had mentioned. "Hm? Oh, yeah, sure." he nodded. "If that's where you want, I mean." PJ shrugged. He actually really didn't mind wherever they ate, but if it was him that was paying, he would at least want a place that they would both enjoy and could agree on.

She was glad he hadn't asked her to elaborate, Sheryl didn't think she would be able to without breaking down. "Here is fine." Sheryl said, leading him into the cafe. She walked up to the counter, her eyes scanning the menu. She was really hungry, but she didn't want to spend all his money. Sheryl sighed softly, her hand going to her constantly growling stomach. "I think I'll just get a sandwich and some water."

He followed her into the cafe, his eyes moving to her stomach, which he noticed her hand was holding. "A-are you sure that's enough?" PJ asked, concerned. "I'm not that hungry..." he moved his hand to his pocket, where he pulled out his wallet. "I think I'm just gonna get coffee, actually." PJ had been able to eat some breakfast before he left. He actually had only told her he was hungry because he wanted to get her mind off of things, and it was the first excuse he had been able to come up with. It wasn't that he was pitying her, but he didn't want her to go on with her crying.

Sheryl shrugged. "I'm used to having little." As soon as the words came out of her mouth she frowned and looked away. Her brother told her many times about speaking without thinking, but half the time she couldn't help it. "I'll be fine." She finally sighed, running a hand once again through her hair. She looked up at him after a while though, biting her lip but not saying anything else, seeing as she couldn't think of anything else to say.

PJ hesitated before giving his money to the woman at the cashier. "O-okay." he stuttered, with a slight nod. "Uh, why don't you go find us a table?" PJ asked, waiting at the counter for their order. Somehow, he couldn't think of any more topics (besides about why exactly Sheryl had been crying) to talk about. His mind wandered, he couldn't figure out what could have made her feel so bad. He hadn't had been so upset before in his life. Was it a break up or something? he thought, remembering how his sister was reacting to her recent break up with her boyfriend. However, he doubted that was it. She said it was something about her arriving in Riverside, didn't she? Ugh, I guess I have to uncover this for myself. Asking Sheryl wouldn't be so easy, would it? His attention turned back to the cashier, and he took the tray from her. "Thanks." he murmured, before turning around, his eyes scanning the cafe for where Sheryl was.

Sheryl nodded and went to find a table like asked, glad that she would have at least a few minutes to think about what had just occurred. Finding a booth away from people, she slid close to the window, resting her head against it and closing her eyes. She wasn't used to people being nice to her. Ever since her parents had died when she was younger, her and her brothers had lived with a foster family that were less than kind to her. They'd run away about a year ago but they still had no where to live, and they tended to push away anyone who tried to help due to trust issues. So why am I here, alone, with this guy I barely know?

Spotting Sheryl sitting by the windows, he made his way over to her and set the tray down on the table. Was she thinking or something? PJ thought. "I didn't interrupt anything, did I?" he asked, biting his lower lip and picking up his coffee. "You look a bit preoccupied. Not that it's a bad thing." he shrugged lightly. Sometimes, his mind wandered, too. Was she thinking about her past or something? Biting his lower lip, PJ hesitated before asking her directly. "Er...about before, what was it exactly that you were crying about?" he tried not to make his voice sound sensitive, though he doubted it was really working. "Uh... You don't have to answer that, if you don't want to..." he quickly put in, not sure whether or not it was a good idea to ask her. Yet.

Sheryl looked up, startled when she heard PJ's voice. "Huh? Oh, no you didn't." She took the water from the tray, sipping it slowly. His next question caught her off guard, though she really didn't know why. She figured he would ask her sooner or later. Question was, was she ready to tell him? Maybe not everything... "Today is the anniversary of my parents death." She murmured. "I..." Sheryl started, and then shook her head, lowering her gaze. "Nevermind."

"Oh.", was all he said, he really didn't know how to respond to such things. "My parents left us when I was four." he said softly. "I mean, my mom works for this cosmetics company. She had to travel to Paris before, and we weren't able to go with her... Well, mainly because we were too young, my mom thought. Ever since, I've been living with my aunt." PJ bit his lower lip. "But since my sister recently turned twenty, my sister and I have been living with her."

"Oh..." Sheryl wished her parents had just left instead of dying. "At least you had somewhere to go. We were stuck in this horrible foster home." Bitterness creeped into her voice as she continued talking, though she never looked up at him. "The people there didn't care about us at all. They hardly fed us and we didn't have clothes that fit half the time. Of course, when someone came by to check up on us we were given clothes to wear just for that day with threats of not having what little food we got for a week if we appeared miserable. And the father was a perv..." She broke off, a tear sliding down her cheek. Her voice broke as she continued in a whisper. "We eventually ran away from there, after my older brother found out what the man had been doing to us girls..."

His eyes widened. "I--I'm sorry..." he said, his voice trailing off. PJ just wished there was something that he could do. He couldn't imagine what Sheryl and her brother felt suffering through all of that. He couldn't even imagine what he would have done in that situation. Would he even be brave enough to run away and attempt to escape? His gaze turned back to Sheryl, who he noticed had a tear sliding down her cheek. "You have a place to stay now, right?" he asked, his blue eyes filled with concern for the her. I wish I could offer to her to stay at my place or something... he thought, biting his lower lip. He knew Annelise wouldn't think it was a good idea... "Why didn't you call the police or something as soon as you guys ran away...?" he leaned over her and wiped the tear she shed away.

Sheryl gave a small nod. "Yeah...well...sorta. We found an abandoned house to stay in for the time being. None of us are old enough to get a job so..." She sniffed as yet another tear slid down her cheek, looking up at PJ when he brushed a tear away. "They wouldn't believe us. We've called before. Besides, they'd just make us go back..." She shook her head. "I can't go back there..."

He couldn't possibly be thinking about inviting a girl he just met into his house... Even so, he felt somewhat scared for her. Sheryl seemed brave, to be living in an abandoned house with only her brothers to protect her. What if someone found out where she lived? "I think..." his voiced trailed off. What would she say?
Wasn't it going to be weird that he was offerring to let her stay with him, when they had merely just met each other? PJ looked away, unsure about what he was going to say next... And what would his sister say about that? Would she even allow it? "Uh... I know this is kind of sudden, since we just met and all... And I think it might not even work out... But maybe you can stay with us, at least until you'll be able to get your own job... And have your own house..." his voice trailed off, What the hell am I doing?
