Avery's alarm clock clicked on early on the fourteenth of February and he quickly silenced it, glancing over his shoulder to check that it hadn't disturbed Gracie, he got out of bed and gathered his running gear silently. He changed in the bathroom and then slipped out of the room down to the girl's bedroom. He was filled with pride and joy when he saw their beaming smiles over the sides of their cribs. He approached Harper's crib first and chuckled a little as he watched her do what he called her 'happy' dance, a little bouncing ball of energy. He lifted her into his arms and kissed her forehead. "You two are too well behaved." He whispered, glancing at the baby monitor. He placed Harper on the changing table and changed her diaper as well as her clothes, before setting her on the rug while he took care of Devyn.
He placed Devyn on the floor. "How about we get some breakfast and then go for a run?" Harper abandoned the doll she'd picked up and waddled back to Avery, grasping onto one of his fingers. He let them lead him down the stairs, by his fingers and then scooped them both into his arms in the kitchen to put them in their high chairs. He fixed them each a bowl of Cheerios and a sippy cup of milk and then went into the garage to get the jogging stroller ready. When he returned he laughed as most of the Cheerios wound up on the floor instead of their tummy's. "I take it back, you two are rotten." He grabbed the broom, did a quick sweep up and got them into their jackets. "Daddy's just gonna grab a banana and then we'll get going deal." He put both of his hands palm up in front of them and they slapped their tiny hands against his, then giggling they ran to the stroller and climbed in, buckling themselves into it. They knew the routine.
Half the banana gone, Avery tucked a blanket around their legs and pushed the stroller back out into the garage, he pushed the button to raise the garage door and tossed the banana peel into the trash before setting off at a brisk pace down Seaview Circle and on toward the center of town.
He made a couple of trips along the way, picking up a red and pink puppy dog for each of the girls for Valentine's Day and a dozen roses for Gracie and a half dozen for his mom. He stopped at his parents house and let himself inside with his key. He put the half dozen roses in a vase in the kitchen and went in search of his dad. "Let's find grandpa." He left the diaper bag on the counter in the kitchen and followed his girl's to his parents room. The girl's raced up the stairs and waited for Avery to open the bedroom door.
Guy Mondego was lying in bed and to the girls appeared to be sleeping, Avery knew better, he'd watched him close his eyes when he'd opened the door. "Go get him." Avery whispered and the two girls tiptoed into the room, a tiny finger pressed to each of their lips. It was too cute for words, Avery remained in the doorway watching. They climbed onto the bed on grandma's side and crawled toward their grandpa, tackling him with hugs. Guy pretended to be surprised and woke up, gathering them both in his arms. "My little angels..." He roared, hugging them both. The giggles were infectious.
"I talked to mom, she said it was alright if I brought them over, I've got something planned for Gracie and I'd bring them along, but I think Gracie might have a heart attack if I did." He shrugged. "They had some Cheerios, but I'm sure if you made them your famous strawberry pancakes they'd eat them, diaper bag is on the counter, we'll come get them after..."
"Mom told me and I'm glad to have them, don't worry about picking them up enjoy your day and your night." He winked. Avery laughed. "Alright well we still might pick them up, but maybe Gracie will take one night off." He waved and slipped out of the room before the girl's realized. Since he'd been back the girl's had grown quite attached to him, usually fits of tears accompanied his departure, and the same was true for Gracie. It broke his heart and he knew Gracie was deeply affected by their tears too.
On his way out he grabbed the bouquet of roses from the stroller and made the last leg of his morning run. He put the rose in a vase and snuck them into the bedroom, placing them on her bedside table then stepped into the shower. He had quite a day planned for her, but wanted to make sure she got as much sleep as her heart desired.
