Tillie nodded, and cleared her throat. "Hello. Ni hao ma. Like that?" she asked, hoping she got the first part of the lesson right. Tillie was already having fun, too. Getting a new friend and learning a new language all in one day? What's next, getting a kiss from him too? Tillie shook her head from those thoughts. Geez, Tillie. You barely know the guy...slow down already.

JuLong nodded, enthusiastically grasping her hands in his and swinging them, "You are genius! Oh my gosh, you so much fast learner!" He praised her, not even caring about his grammar at the moment. He was right, her hands were soft and pretty and... perfect. 天啊,这是他们的爱是一见钟情吗?(Oh my god, is this what they mean by love at first sight? He wondered to himself, realizing just how beautiful this girl in front of him truly was.

Tillie giggled and laughed even louder than before when JuLong started swinging their arms together just as she had set her sketchbook and pencil down on the rock next to them. He really was a fun guy to be around. And the more she looked at him, the more she thought how cute he was, too. Maybe he was the one.... he seemed to be strange and odd just like her. They could be childish and silly together without worrying so much of being or acting a certain way around each other. She could be herself around him. That was something she's been waiting for for a long time now. "I do tend to be a fast learner. So I'm told anyway..." she giggled some more. "Teach me more!" she cooed at him, jumping up and down on her toes.

"Um..." JuLong hummed as he tried to think of something else to teach her. "Okay, okay. This one a little more harder. wo bu zhi dao putonghua lianghao (I Don't Know Chinese Well)." He said slowly, then repeated it syllable by syllable to help her. "It mean... um... 'I... no know Chinese good.'" He tried, this time knowing his grammar was a little more important. "Don't know. yes." He rambled after the fact, correcting himself.

Tillie listened carefully to his next lesson. She could tell this one was going to be a little more difficult. "Okay.... Wo bu zhi--um... dau puto--putonga langha?" she scrunched up her face at that one, knowing for a fact she didn't even come close to getting it right. "Ahh...this is hard.." she groaned. "So...what I was, er, was trying to say was that I don't know Chinese well?" she asked him, speaking it more slowly for him to understand the grammar more.

JuLong laughed, not necessarily at her, and shook his head. "Close! Wo. Bu. Zhi. Dao. Pu. Tong. Hua. Liang. Hao." He said again, even slower this time. He also made a point to show he was still trying to learn English. "I don't know Chinese well." He repeated as a reminder for her. With a giggle, he practiced using the grammar in general. "I don't know English well." Before Tillie had the chance to say anything, he thought of another to show her, and pointed to her sketchbook. "Can I use? Maybe write down in pinyin it will much easier, then you can see where words belong."*
((What he's trying to say is "If I write it down in pinyin (the romanized version of Chinese), then I can translate it for you and maybe you can understand it better."))

"Wo. Bu. Zhi. Dao. Pu. Tong. Hua. Liang. Hao." she repeated each word after him. Tillie giggled with him when he repeated what the phrase meant, then rephrasing it with his own sentence. She was about to say something else, but JuLong added in something, having to do with her sketchbook. "Oh! Sure." she smiled, grabbing her sketchbook and pencil and handing it to him. "Hopefully it'll help. I tend to be more of a visual person anyway..." she explained, watching as he began writing.

JuLong took the sketchbook and pencil from her earnestly but gently as began writing down the phrase in Chinese, pinyin, and English. 我___ 不 __ 知道 ___ 普通话 ____ 良好 wǒ__bù__zhīdào_pǔtōnghuà__liánghǎo I___don't_know___Mandarin___well "Like this is how it means." He told her with a big smile.

Tillie couldn't help but look over his shoulder as he wrote the translations down. She grabbed her sketchbook back to get a better look at what he wrote, and tried repeating the phrase again. "Wo bu zhidao putonghua lianghao." she said a bit slowly, but still more accurately than the last two or three times. "How's that?" she asked eagerly but cutely.

"Wow! You really good genius~" He praised, his voice even squeaking a bit as he said the sentence. He clapped enthusiastically, "Very much better. I think write down and it much easy." He told her, his smile still wide.

Tillie squealed with excitement, jumping up and down on her toes as well. "See? Not only am I a fast learner, but I do better when stuff is written down. But you also have to repeat it to me. So that I know what the words are suppose to sound like of course." She explained to him enthusiastically. "Write another! I wanna learn some more!" she exclaimed, pushing the pad and pencil back into his hands, feeling eager like a little kid to learn something new.

JuLong nodded enthusiastically as thought about what else he could teach her, and then thought of something else, turning the page and scribbling on the back of the last page he used. 是多少[这]? Shi duoshao [zhe]? "Shi duoshao zhe. How much is it? ah no, this. How much this is. Also." He brought the sketchpad back to facing him and wrote down something else under what he had just written. 谢谢. Xie Xie. "Xie xie, thank you." He told her, biting his bottom lip as he waited for her to try saying it.

Tillie waited patiently, as well as eagerly for the pad of paper to be handed back to her, once it had, she practically snatched it, eager to read the next few he wrote out for her. After saying them to her, she tried on her own. "Shi duo--du, ah...duoshao zhe." She scrunched her nose up knowing she messed that one up...but continued with the next one, as it seemed easier to say. "Xie, xie." she grinned like a little kid. "Now that one was so much easier!" she said cutely with a small laugh. "How did I do with the first one though? It was much harder..." she whined a bit.

"Um yeah. Probably really hard." JuLong agreed, the tiniest bit of a frown on his face. "Shi duo shao zhe." He repeated, saying each syllable slowly so she could hear the tones and how to say it properly. "But you do really good. Now you know how to say three thing. Soon four. You really fast learn." He told her, giving her some more enthusiastic applause.

"I am a fast learner, huh?" she giggled, emphasizing on the last bit to show himself how to pronounce certain words in English. "Okay, let me try again." she cleared her throat, before repeated what he said again. "Shi duo shao zhe." Again, she squealed with excitement, knowing for a fact she got it right that time. She applauded herself for it, too.
