"Yes, you did, after a couple of minutes, but that is not quite the point," Donia said, still smiling. She laughed loudly when he suggested that he would have had to call her by her full name if she'd introduced herself as such. "No, of course not, but I wouldn't do that anyway. It's just Donia."
She laughed. "Stealing pictures isn't so very nice. One day they will be worth a lot," she said, jokingly. "Kidding, of course. And I usually get reprints, so I can probably spare a few." She opened her mouth to say something, perhaps to protest and maybe just to pretend to -- she hadn't actually consented to his taking the photograph--, when he started to put it in his wallet, but closed it and let him slide it in. "Do you have pictures of your family in there?" she asked. "If so, I would love to see them." She didn't know if he actually kept photos in his wallet or not, and didn't really expect him to keep her picture there after he'd gone home. "You know, I could have given you a protective sleeve for that," she said as an afterthought. It was too large to fit in a wallet-sized photo slot, and she thought his wallet might smudge the finish, though she was overly careful.

Kai rolled his eyes but couldn't help but chuckle at her. "See?" Though honestly, if he could do it all over again he still wouldn't change it. She was the only one who called him Mikhael and when other people called him by his real name, it just wasn't the same as when it came from Donia.
He quirked a brow at Donia. "Taking pictures of people who are unaware isn't a very nice thing to do either." He laughed with her and tossed her his wallet where every important person in his life had a picture. There was one of his parents when his father was still alive, there was one where he was in between his two sisters when they were much younger, there was one with his entire family cousins included, there was one of him and Xander with their guitars and at the very back was a picture Aya had taken of Donia when she had been at the cafe. Aya had given it to him in tears as she apologized for taking him away from the person he had fallen in love with. He shook his head at the memory and smiled. "I didn't put it into the wallet thing for pictures. But I'm just going to keep it in my wallet anyway so I don't need the sleeve for it... Thanks though."

"Well, nobody said I was nice, now, did they?" Donia took the wallet, holding it carefully though he'd passed it off without, perhaps, a second thought. She looked through the pictures, looking at each in turn and appreciating them, but smiling at the one with him and his sisters, and at the one with his cousin and the guitars. "I want to meet your family some time. I lived next door to them for quite a while, but hardly saw them at all." The smiling expression left her face when she came to the last, unexpected picture. "Where --" she started, but she then recognized the background, so even if she didn't know who had taken it, she could guess. It had to be one of his family members; seeing the expression on her face in the photograph, she knew she had been watching Kai. "Compliment the photographer of that one for me, will you?" She handed the wallet back to him, still a little incredulous that he had a picture of her in his wallet. "I guess it's only fair that you have a couple of pictures of me, seeing as I have several of you on my wall." Maybe a few more than several. She rubbed at her arm, where the long scar was, more from being a little uncomfortable than from being chilly or from it itching.

Kai smiled at her. "I think you're nice." He looked down at the box and continued to look at the pictures, regardless of whether he knew the people in them or not. "Next time... I'm pretty sure they're all itching to meet you as well. Though I must warn you that we have expanded into three very large and complicated families." He shrugged, not really sure how to explain the arrival of the Burkehearts and the Andersons. Kai had the decency to blush at her surprise. "I hope you don't mind. I didn't know Aya had taken a picture of you before she got sick. She gave it to me when we moved..." He watched her fidget and frowned lightly. "You alright?"

"I have taken multiple pictures though you have protested to them, and I have let several doors shut in your face. What about that suggests me to you as nice?" Donia said, laughing lightly, but blushing from his statement anyway. She picked a photograph up out of the box, and it was another one that he'd taken, this time not of her, but of an elderly couple, and she looked at it contentedly.
She might be embarrassed to meet them if this were really so, but it wasn't an issue just yet, and she could handle herself. "Alright. I suppose it will be a fun game to try to keep track of who belongs with whom," Donia said. She watched him blush, and was not sure if she wanted to know what it meant. This day had simply been so fast-paced. "Is she alright? I don't exactly know what happened, so if it's not confidential, I'd like to hear." Donia had been looking down, but she looked up at Kai again when he asked about her. "Honestly, I'm not sure," she said, though she crossed her arms in an effort to stop fidgeting with them.

Kai took a couple of pictures from the box as he glanced at Donia and smiled. "Trade stories then? I'll tell you about Aya if you tell me what's making you fidget so much." He looked at each of them and smiled, recognizing some as ones he had present at. "She got cancer last year and we moved for her treatment... Mom wanted everyone together to support Aya so we all moved with her. She's alright now... In remission and still as fiery as ever." He shook his head and smiled, he was very proud of Aya's ability to stand up after facing such arduous battles. "When we moved back here, we found out that my mom's best friend in college had been killed in an accident with her husband so her kids are staying with us now. Xander, the guy in the picture with the guitars? He's the eldest and he's my best friend; maybe you'd like to meet him sometime." He shrugged again. "And our cousins, the Andersons decided to live a few houses down from us. I'm not sure why they moved here but apparently there's something going on with their parents so..." Kai shrugged again and chuckled. "Sorry, I'm talking too much."

When I figure it out, you'll be the first to know, Donia thought, but nodded, because he seemed about to proceed anyway. Donia nodded as he spoke. It seemed a little like what had happened with her family, except that it would be truly insane for a sibling to get that sick. She couldn't fathom that happening with Katniss, not after all they'd been through, all they had already lost. One heart can only break so many times. "I'm really glad for you that she's alright, and I hope to God she never relapses."
"No, it's alright," Donia said. "It sort of relaxes me when you keep talking like that." She blushed a little. "I would like to meet your friend Xander. Does he play as well as you do?" Donia found a recent picture of Katniss in the box she was going through, and stood to put it on the wall, knowing there wasn't a duplicate up already.
Sorry it's short again.

(( It's not short... Again. ))
Kai nodded solemnly, a tiny smile on his face as he looked through more pictures. "Yeah, me too... I honestly don't think my mom could take it." He looked at Donia and chuckled softly. Mikhael was sure that if Aya ever relapsed, she'd get through it. She was a brave girl who didn't take shit from anything, even cancer... But he worried about his mom. His mom had had to suffer through cancer with Kai's grandmother, and now her youngest daughter? It wasn't fair to her at all.
Kai quirked a brow at her but shrugged it off, pretty sure Donia wouldn't appreciate it if he teased her. "He's a pretty good bassist; he'd probably like you too." He watched her put up a picture of her younger sister on her wall and smiled. "How do you do that? I mean, there must be hundreds--and yes I know I'm grossly exaggerating, of pictures on your walls... How do you know if you've put up a duplicate of it already or not?"

Donia nodded; hopefully Kai would introduce them at some point, and since he was Kai's best friend, hopefully he would like her. "How do I do what?" Donia asked quickly, then listened to his explanation and smiled. "I don't know. It's easy. How do you remember which guitar fret is the correct one to play? It's easy to get used to once you've looked at them for a while, and I wouldn't take pictures and not look at them after I put them up. With these, though...you know I've put all of these up in the last fourty-eight hours, right? If I didn't remember which I had put up, I think it would be kind of sad. I'm not used to all of the positions yet, of course. I still might move a few around." After placing Katniss's photo next to several nature shots, near a picture of a younger Katniss, Donia turned back and sat down to look through more of the photographs in the box. "Close your eyes, Mikhael. I bet you can tell me the descriptions of at least five pictures, and where they are in this room." That was the best thing about pictures, Donia thought. You didn't have to try to remember them, but somehow the human brain records images automatically, all day long, and these pictures were no different. Her pictures became a part of her as she got to know them, like details from a story's plot can become part of a person's reasoning if they know the story well.

Kai chuckled at her question. "I got used to the frets with practice... Lots and lots of practice." He was pretty sure that her skill in photographs didn't need practice; probably that she got used to it since she looked at the pictures often enough. It made sense. Kai obediently closed his eyes and thought about the pictures on her wall. "I'm not sure I can name 5, I honestly wasn't looking at your walls that much...", he said with a soft chuckle. "Well I know there are a couple of pictures of me on the wall... The ones that you took. And the one I took of you..." He opened his eyes and smiled a bit sheepishly. "Sorry, those are the only ones that really caught my eye because they were familiar... But I get your point."

Donia laughed. "Well, they're all familiar to me," she said. "I guess I'm just more used to looking than you are. You know I'd fail miserably if I ever tried to play an instrument." Donia singled out another few pictures, one of which was from her last foster home, and the others of Katniss doing various activities, such as ice skating. "I know this isn't really your thing...if you'd rather just watch a movie or play some cards or something, that's fine. I have plenty of time to go through these pictures. And I don't know when you have to go." One more picture caught her eye, however, and she pulled it from her box. It was the sunset picture she'd been so set on taking when they'd met at the lake. She smiled, thinking of the memory, and triumphant at the beautiful mix of colors in the sky and on the lake, coupled with the slight shadows from the trees on the shore.

Kai shook his head. "No, it may not be my thing but I'm enjoying it." He shrugged and smiled at her. "I feel like I'm finally getting to know you, you know?" Donia had shared things with him before but he felt like she was only now, opening her world to him and for some reason that made him exquisitely happy. "Besides, it isn't that late yet; I don't really have a curfew though so I don't have to worry about the time." He leaned close to Donia to look at the picture she was holding and he chuckled. "Hey, I know that picture..."

I am glad, she thought, when Kai said that he was enjoying their time together. Donia felt slightly uncomfortable again, because there were still so many things he didn't know about her, and she didn't really know where to start. "I just don't know how early you have to get up in the morning," Donia explained. "Oh, you do?" she asked, raising her eyebrows, but she couldn't keep a straight face very long, so she laughed and her face relaxed to normal. "It is an MABtown favorite." She placed the photograph with the others she had been collecting, and reached back into her box, but then paused. "So is the one you took the only picture you want? Tell you what, pick any one picture in this room and I will tell you the story behind it." That could be a start, for her letting him get to know her better. If she didn't get a good start on that today, she didn't know when she would.

Kai shrugged. "Not that early; my first class isn't until 11 actually." He chuckled with her and nodded as an answer to her question. "Yeah, I'm happy with this one. I was kidding about stealing your film, you know. I don't really mind that much that you take pictures of me." He used to mind but later on, in Donia's absence, Kai had realized that he would have rather that she took pictures of him. At least then, even if they were apart, she could still remember him through the photographs. Kai grinned at her suggestion. "Okay then." He stood from the bed and looked around at all the pictures she had put on her walls. 'Okay, how about this one." He moved closer to the picture in question and pointed to it. It was one with Katniss and Donia who were much younger then; they were with someone else... A boy who he wasn't familiar with. Definitely not one of the Weirich kids.

Well, you certainly protested a lot, Donia thought, but she had hoped he didn't mind, because she didn't intend to stop taking shots of him, especially since it had been so long since she'd been able to capture his face on film.
Donia looked at the framed photo as he indicated it, her eyes brushing over her more-than-ordinarily happy face and Katniss's grin straight to Andy's features, and the favorite sweater he'd been wearing the day the picture was taken, even though it was summertime. She wasn't sure she could look at Mikhael and tell him about this one, so she kept her eyes on Andy's bright blue ones. "That day," she began, "I had just gotten home from a soccer game. I had assisted the winning goal, but as soon as I got off the field, I was worried about Andy. He had a school play that day. He wasn't in a lead role, or anything, but he was extremely nervous and he had been tangling up his lines a lot when we practiced." She had zoned out, and her hand had migrated to her neck, but she sighed when she realized it, blinked, looked briefly at another picture, and went on. "He didn't miss a line," Donia said, a hint of pride in her voice. "Mrs. Hazlin -- er, our mom," she corrected, because it seemed like an insult to her memory to call her anything else, "forgot to bring a camera, so she didn't take any pictures of Andy on stage, like everyone else's parents did. Andy expressed disappointment upon finding out, but not much. My mom was annoyed or ashamed with herself, though, and then she realized that she really didn't have any pictures of the three of us." Just those from our initial files. "When we were outside later, them playing and me doing homework, she pulled us together to get some shots, this being the best one. She insisted that Katniss hide her cast, but look, you can still see part of it behind my shoulder there." Donia pointed, her eyes on the picture once more. "Anyway, this picture was in our front room at home, and it's the only one I still have with the three of us." The others hadn't made it through the fire, nor had any others, except a couple of Katniss placed on the same surface.
Donia looked at the picture for another minute, then said offhand, "Katniss is Andy's age in that picture now. I can hardly believe that so much time has passed. This was a couple of months before his ninth birthday party." And he never got to see his tenth. Donia knew she'd sort of been in a reverie with this retelling, and she hadn't voiced the details that might be important to most, but it was all she could do, and she didn't think Kai would mind her way of explaining.
