Skating down the sidewalk, with music blasting from her iPod to her ears, she had finally made it to her destination. She pulled out her ear buds, sticking her iPod back in her back pocket, holding her skateboard by her side as she took a deep breath in before exhaling it as she took slow, easy steps into the Riverside Church. She looked around the place before setting her skateboard down gently at the entrance, and the first thing that crossed her mind was how empty it was. Good. I'm alone. She preferred to be alone in a place as religious as this. So she tapped her shoulders and forehead before kneeling down at one of the back benches to start her prayer.
"It's me again. Anne." Anne started out, soft and subtle. "I know I haven't been able to talk to you lately, its just....I've had a lot on my mind lately. Hurricane in MABTown, having to move into Riverside. And having to make new friends from the start. I know its still no excuse, and I am sorry." she exhaled a soft and sincere sigh, "And I do hope my father and brothers are up there just as happy as they were down here. Because, well...I, I," she began stuttering out, holding back a few tears, "I just miss them so much. I've been through so much. And no matter how much I hold it all in, keeping up that brave face my father always said to keep up...I still feel broken. I just....All I ask of you right now is for someone to be by my side. Someone like my father, or brothers. Someone to just tell me everything will be alright, and maybe even treat me to a simple hug." she knew immediately the last part wasn't going to happen, seeing as how she came across to others, it wasn't very likely that she was going to get one of those hugs she's been asking for. "All I'm asking for, is a friend to stick by me; to be by my side."
As she finished her conversation and prayer, she stood back up to her feet, finishing up her little ritual by holding both her hands to her mouth, blowing a kiss up towards the sky; towards her family, and returning her hands back to her heart, leaving nothing but a single tear streaming down her cheek. She stood there with her chin against her chest, reciting a silent prayer and wish to herself, before even thinking of heading back out again, setting those last few bits of tears free from their misery.

It had been a very grueling week for Eli, and he felt completely bare and raw, stripped of the person he once was. This time of year was very hard for him, his parent's death still plagued him every day he had to live without them. Usually he would go to his sister for these kind of things, but he figured she would be busy with college and finals and didn't want to pester her. It was so hard for him to believe that they had really been gone for a year, the wounds were still so fresh in his heart and mind.
This is what brought Eli to the church in the first place, he somehow felt closer to them here, and was granted a few fleeting moments of refuge from the pain he carried around inside. With a sigh, the boy headed inside the church, propping his skateboard in the corner of the small entranceway. He traveled down the carpeted walkway and sat in the front row of pews. Eli sat with arms out, clasped hands and a hung head. He was fairly shielded within the hood of his dark jacket in the shadows.
It was here that he turned off his iPod that had been playing music, letting the quiet serenity wash over him. Eli let it out, tears rolling down his face. "Mom? Dad?" He let out in a choked whisper, his voice laced with sorrow, "I miss you so much." His hands clutched together tightly. "I feel like I can't do this without you. Everyone has been so supportive, but other than Ivy, nobody understands. I just wish I had someone that didn't remind me of all that I lost at every turn." He stopped speaking and sat quietly for a few moments.
When the girl began to speak, Eli's head shot up. It had startled him for a second, but then he quickly realized that she had either not seen or heard him, or chose to ignore him. He knew it was wrong to listen, but her words caught his attention. It seemed that this girl had lost as much as he had, maybe even more. She certainly sounded as lonely as he did. As the girl stood, he felt as if he intruded on a private moment, and felt horrible, even if it was unintentional. Eli stood as well, reaching up to wipe the tears that had fallen from his green eyes.

Once she was just about done with her prayer, Anne tilted her head back up again, just about to wipe away her tears when she suddenly saw another person in the church. She couldn't tell from the back of his hoodie how old he looked exactly, or even if it truly was a he. But whatever the age or gender, Anne quickly wiped away her tears with the sleeve of her jacket, wondering how much that kid had heard. Or even if they had heard what she said at all. How could I have not noticed them on my way in here? Perhaps it was the dark hooded jacket they were wearing that made them seem almost invisible to her.
Just like Anne, she didn't even want to know who the figure was, nor did she want to meet them here in the church and let her reputation slide down the drain. So she cleaned up the rest of her watery eyes, doing a slight bow with her hands clasp together and her eyes looking up at the Gods, whispering a simple, "Thank you for your time." And almost immediately dashed out of the aisle of the chapel, grabbing her skateboard on her way out and was finally out of that kids' sight if she ever was, and back on the sidewalk heading to where ever her next destination was called to.
She skidded to a stop then, not even two feet away from the church then when she realized she forgot her iPod, which happened to be sitting on the bench of the Chapel. "Ah, shit." she cursed to herself, debating whether or not she should slip back into the church just for a stupid little iPod she never went anywhere without.

Eli found himself staring at the spot the girl had just vacated with an extreme intensity. Like himself, it seemed that she had not meant for anyone to hear those words. But he couldn't make himself feel bad about it, because there was finally someone who would understand how he was feeling. Out of the corner of his eye, she say a glint in the sunlight and walked over it it. Picking it up, he realized it was an iPod, and if the girl was anything like him, she would be attached to that thing at the hip. This was his chance to follow her without looking insane, and maybe get her to talk to him.
He quickly shoved the iPod into the pocket of his hoodie. Eli darted down the aisle, his hood falling back with the bounce of his run, and chucked his board under his arm. He could catch he if he saw what direction she had gone in. He skidded to a stop when he stepped out onto the sidewalk, and saw the girl still standing there. He swallowed nervously, and shifted his skateboard to hold it by the bearings at his side.

With her board now at her side, gripping it with one arm while tapping on her thigh still debating whether to go back for the iPod or not, she decided on just leaving it. She could always buy a new one right? But as soon as she was turning her body, a figure came running up towards her. She furrowed her brows towards him with a questioning look as she took a good look at the boy. The hoodie. she nearly gasped, with her mouth slightly opened. Oh, crap. It was a guy in that church!? He probably saw me blubbering like a baby...damn. She placed her hand on her hip then, just trying to show that she really wasn't all that sensitive like most girls were. "Um...can I help you?" she asked all so casually, with an eyebrow raised.

Eli coughed nervously into his hand and brought his eyes back to hers. What was he supposed to say to her? Let me follow you around and tell me all of your secrets. Yeah, like that would go over well. His hand came up to grip the hair at the name of his neck, and he let out a frustrated sigh, letting his hand drop. Eli frowned slightly, "Um..." he began, smooth man. "You're hurting, and..." He couldn't seem to let the words out. He looked into her red rimmed eyes, and saw beyond her tough and nonchalant exterior. Her eyes held pain, and he knew, just knew she would understand him. "I just know how it feels." He rushed out nervously.

Anne went from one eyebrow raised to both of them raised. What is loser trying to say? Is he flirting or something? she scoffed mentally, giving a quick blink when he finally let it out of what he wanted to say. Or at least the first part of what he was trying to say she thought. Her eyebrows were still raised at him, as she gave a quick sniffle, wiping her nose on her sleeve. "I..I don't know what you're talking about. No one understands me." she pointed out flatly, getting ready to turn her body around and ditch the guy, but instead decided to give him another chance to retaliate of what he had just spit out to her.

Eli sighed and fought the urge to roll his eyes. He people skill had seriously been lacking in the long month spent in his solitary world. He swallowed again, and decided to just let it out. "I heard what you said in there," he began, "It wasn't intentional, I was just there when you came in. Honestly I didn't even notice until you started to speak." Eli paused, really looking at her. He didn't break eye contact, "I may not know you, but I know how you're feeling. That look in your eyes, I see it whenever I look in the mirror." He frowned, "So don't tell me I wouldn't understand, because we were both here for similar reasons." Eli reached into the pocket of his jacket, "I went after you to give you this. If it's as important to you as it for me, then I figured you'd miss it." He held the iPod out to her.

Anne listened to what he had to say, more intensely than expected. At first, she thought he was just trying to make her feel better, that is, until he held out her iPod to her. Her eyes went wide at the sight of the device and she just had the sudden urge to yell out a big thank you to the stranger. But instead, she responded back flat and dull, "Oh, thanks." with a small smile sneaking out from the corner of her mouth as she grabbed the iPod from his hand, sliding it back in her back pocket. "And sorry. I don't mean to sound so rude or anything. Its just that..." she let out a frustrated sigh, "I don't normally meet other people like me. I mean, other than the people I live with, but still..I just..." she sighed again, "I have issues, okay?" her facial expression relaxed a little more the more she spoke to him.

Eli smiled as he let his hand drop back to his side. He let his skateboard fall to the ground and propped it up with the tip of his foot. "It's okay," he said softly. "I'd be defensive if someone listened in on my private conversations." He looked at his feet with that, "I'm sorry about that, by the way." He let her finish speaking, before adding, "I know how you feel. It's really hard to feel along all of the time." Eli nodded. "Issue's, don't I know it."

Anne watched his skateboard fall to the ground with it propped upright with his foot, having her do the same, just so she could cross her arms. She nodded. "Do you really though? I mean, every time I talk to someone about it, they always say that they understand, but only I can see in their eyes, that," she swallowed another lump caught in her throat, "they don't mean it at all. And that they have no idea what its like in my shoes." she explained to him, not meaning to put him down in anyway, that's just the way she felt whenever she let others know about her past. "And I'm sorry if I'm being so rude or negative about everything your saying, but, that's just the way I am." she added in, her voice lowering to a more relaxed but still serious tone to go along with her relaxed facial expressions.

Eli kicked the ground with his foot, not aggressively. He watched his feet, he felt so exposed. "I really think I do." He said softly, looking up into her eyes. "I know exactly how that is, which is why I have taken to keeping it all to myself." Eli grimaced, knowing how skeptical he would be feeling if he was in her shoes. "I know..." He paused, wondering if he would be able to force the words out of his mouth. His throat was filled with unmasked emotion, and it filtered out as he spoke. "h-how you feel, because last year..." Eli closed his eyes, and looked down, afraid that if he opened his eyes tears would slip out. "Today. My parents were killed, while I watched." He choked the words out, willing to tears in his eyes to go away.

Anne kept her arms crossed as he continued speaking to her. It wasn't long then, while he was talking, her arms began to drift back down to her sides, her eyes focusing more onto his. At first she thought he was just saying that just to make her feel better, or tell her that she wasn't alone or some bullshit like that. But then she saw real emotion building up in the boy in front of her. That's when she knew for sure he had been telling her the truth. "Oh wow." was the first thing to spill out of her mouth. "I--I didn't know. Damn, I'm sorry." now it was her turn to lower her head to her feet, sudden emotion filling up back in her eyes again, having been reminded of her own father and brothers. But was able to buck up the courage she had and face him again, wiping her nose on her sleeve. "Sorry." she sniffled again, putting her brave face back on.

Eli wiped the tears from his eyes and swallowed the lump in his throat. His looked back up at at her, and let out an involuntary laugh at his next thought. "I just spilled out a deep dark secret and I don't even know your name." He said softly, and gazed at her in wonder. He never opened up to anyone. "Umm... I'm Eli. Eli Everdeen." He told the girl. He let out a small smile, which he'd never thought he would do on this day. "It's okay, to be skeptical and want to be alone because it's become second nature." He said, looking at her. "But, it's also okay to let people in, or to want someone to care enough to make you let them in." Eli looked down at his feet, knowing he was probably saying too much, but he couldn't bring himself to care.

Seeing him wipe the tears from his eyes, followed by laughing a bit right after made Anne realize that maybe this guy wasn't too bad after all. Maybe he really was that great trustworthy friend she's been looking for(she hasn't been much into looking for a boyfriend lately). Deciding it was best to keep the atmosphere light and happy again, Anne laughed along with the boy, Eli, as he had introduced himself. "I'm Anne. And I think I'm starting to agree with you on that." she bit her lip. "Although with the way I am, it'll probably take a while before I really tell you all about my past." she admitted to him. Mostly because she didn't want to start tearing up in public as she nearly did a moment ago when he had. Guess she just didn't want people to see that soft side of her. She never did.
