When the girl began to leave, Silas frowned. He didn't know what it was about the stranger than made him want to chase after her and talk to her. It was odd, and completely unlike who he had become. If he really thought about it, a lot of how he had been acting around the nameless girl had been out of character. At least unlike who he thought he was after leaving his father. But, maybe, just maybe that was changing too? Whatever it was about her was what made him throw some money on the counter and follow after her. He just hoped that when he made it to her, she didn't think he was some creep that was going to stalk her. Silas called after the girl, and caught up with her, making sure to stay a comfortable distance away. "I'm sorry, but I didn't even get your name." He said, glancing down at the ground for a second. "I'm Silas." He held out his hand for her to shake, and shrugged. "Um, just call me if you need any help. " Silas pulled out a pen and picked up a stray napkin that fluttered along the sidewalk, writing down his name and number quickly. He knew that she would probably just trash the napkin once he was out of site, but he figured it was worth a try. "I just know how it can be, when you're alone in a new place. It can be nice to know that there is someone who is willing to help." He shrugged once again, handing her the napkin.

Erica was halfway to her car when she heard him calling after her, causing her to turn around instantly. "Oh, um, I'm sorry," she said, shaking his hand in return. "I'm Erica. Erica Dempsey." She felt a small tingle in her arm as her hand touched his. Shocked at the sudden feeling, she immediately pulled her hand away. "I'd give you my number, but I have no idea where I'm staying at the moment. And there's a very good chance that I'll probably have to change my cell number." Her new life would be difficult enough, but it would be just as challenging with her mother and Paul constantly calling and harassing her. She smiled and took the napkin from him. "Thank you so much. I could really use a friend. You have no idea how much I need one right now."

Silas smiled yet again when she didn't look at him like he was utterly insane. If he were honest, he would admit that he hoped she had some kind of trouble, just so he could see her again. Though, at this point, he wasn't even sure if she was just placating him. He guessed he would find out sooner or later. He knew exactly how Erica was feeling though, he had been there too. He was kind of glad she had somebody to turn to, even if he was a stranger to her, and might always remain one. He knew that he wished he had someone when he was new in town. "I'm glad I can help." Silas replied with a shrug. He was probably in need of a friend as much as she was. He turned to walk away from her, back to his own car before turning to look at her again once he was a few feet away. "I know how it is to feel alone. I'm just glad I can be there to make sure you don't feel that way here. And hopefully I didn't sound like a total creep just now." Silas chuckled and waved, turning to head to his car once again. "Oh, and Erica?" He called over his shoulder with a smile, "Good luck."

"Thanks," Erica said as she headed back towards her car. "Good luck to you too, Silas." She got in and drove away, trying not to look back at him in her rearview mirror. The sight of him moving farther and farther away from view made her a little sad. She had been alone on the road for so long that it felt kind of depressing to be without company so suddenly. Sighing deeply, she kept driving, in search of a motel for the night. It was getting late and she figured that her mother's cousin would be more receptive to her if she showed up during the day, rather than at night.
Two days later, Erica was still in her motel room, stretched out on the bed, staring at the various cracks in the ceiling. She had managed to track down her family's address, but she couldn't bring herself to go over there no matter how hard she tried. She had no idea what she would say to them. Sure, she owed them an apology for the rude way she had treated them over the years, but what next? What if they didn't accept her apology? She had already been prepared for them turning her away, but the idea of it was now causing her to become paralyzed with fear, forcing her to imprison herself in her hotel room. Is this what freedom feels like? I escaped to get trapped again? Not knowing what else to do, she took out her phone and dialed Silas's number, all the while praying that his offer still stood. She needed somebody to talk to and she needed to get out. Hopefully he could help her with at least one of those things.

Silas went home with a smile on his face that night, for the first time in a long while. It was new to him to actually have a reason to smile genuinely, especially for something as simple meeting someone new. He didn't know why, but that smile remained on his face all throughout the evening. He didn't know when Erica would call, or if she would call at all. He didn't really want to let it bother him, he feared though, that he would return to his old ways. Those days were filled with a sadness that he had originally thought nobody would be able to fill. But maybe, just maybe, he was wrong about that. Later that night, as he turned out the lights, a warm feeling rested in Silas' chest. One that he hadn't felt in such a long time. That feeling was hope, and it felt great.
He spent the next few days working, as if nothing had changed. When, really, everything was different. Silas had a spring in his step and a look in his eye that held how new and confusing his feelings were, but he knew he would try and embrace it. Not only because it actually felt nice, but because he was tired of being alone in this town. When his lunch break came around two days later, Silas left the movie store and walked down the block to a sandwich shop. Once inside he got his sandwich and set at one of the many booths, and watched as people walked by. He got to thinking about his life, and what he wanted to do with it, but was brought out of his thoughts when his cellphone began ringing in his pocket. Pulling it out, he checked the caller id, and couldn't help but smile when it was a number he didn't recognize. He didn't want to get his hopes up though, after all, it could be anyone on the other line, a telemarketer or a wrong number even. "Hello?" He answered, setting down his soda on the table.

As soon as she heard Silas's voice on the other end, Erica immediately started to clam up. She wasn't sure why she was so nervous; she had been talking on the phone for practically her entire life. It wasn't a difficult thing to do at all. "Uh, hi Silas," she said after clearing her throat. "I-it's Erica. I'm not sure if you remember me or not...." She paused again, mentally hitting herself in the head for saying that. Of course he remembers you! It's only been a few days..... "I'm staying at a motel here in Riverside," she quickly continued. "I was wondering if you wanted to hang out or something.....whenever you have time....."
She sat up on the bed, silently hoping that he'd say yes. It felt so weird to need and rely on someone this badly. She also hoped that she hadn't caught him at a bad time. Silas had said that he had been in the same boat as her before, but that was pretty much all she knew about him. She had no idea what he did during the day, whether he had a job, responsibilities, or even a girlfriend to keep him busy. He had told her to call if she needed anything, but she felt bad about causing any type of disturbance to his daily life.

As much as he was trying not to get his hopes up, he still did. When you have to remind yourself not to get your hopes up, it usually means they already are, and there is nothing you can do about it. Silas kind of just let the girl ramble on, staring out the window of that sandwich shop. He couldn't help but feeling a little scared. He hadn't opened up to anyone in such a long time, and it was proving to be harder than it seemed. Silas smiled anyway, forcing those thoughts that scared him away. But really, who was he kidding? He still hadn't some here to do what he was going to do... meet his family.
"Yeah, Hi... Erica." He said, running his ringer through the condensation on his soda cup. "I didn't think you'd call." Silas probably wouldn't admit it, but he was glad she was staying in Riverside, and needed company. As selfish as it was, it was how he felt. "Anyway, I'd love to. It sounds fantastic, actually." Seriously? When did you get so uncool? He coughed and shook his head before continuing, leaning forward to rest his arms on the table. "I'm actually on my lunch break right now, but I get off around five thirty if that's not too late for you." A part of him was telling him to hang up the phone and never look back, that little voice that nagged at him. People always leave... He was right though, people always did leave. They move on to bigger and better things, and the ones who are afraid of change get let behind, forced to wait for the dust to settle. The question was, could he handle it again?

A wave of disappointment washed over Erica. He didn't think I'd call? Was it a bad idea to call? Had he just given his number to her out of politeness? She was all set to make up a phony excuse to get off the phone when he agreed to hang out with her, causing her to let out a huge sigh of relief. "That would be perfectly fine," she replied, trying to control her overwhelming joy. "Five-thirty's not too late at all." No time was too late for her. Even if he told her that he didn't finish work until midnight, she would still want to hang out with him. It wasn't like she had anything major planned tomorrow. There was the possible trip to her family's house, but it was still kind of iffy.
"This town is still pretty foreign to me, so I'm not sure what we could do tonight. We can always hang out here at the motel if you can't think of anything fun to do." She looked around the room. The only entertaining things were a TV and a minibar. The TV had gotten a lot of use out if since she'd arrived a few days ago, but the minibar remained untouched. There had been several desperate and lonely occasions when she had thought of making use of it, but she immediately decided against it once she realized that it would cost extra. Now was definitely not a time to be frivolous with money. "Do you want me to meet you somewhere instead? I can write down the directions."

Silas didn't admit that the town was still pretty foreign to him as well, but the difference was that he had been there for months. His little knowledge about Riverside was evidence that he really didn't get out much. He didn't want to let that stop him though because he wanted to get to know Erica. She may have been the only one in the whole city who knew what it felt like to me manipulated by their parents, and trying to start over. The only one who came here seeking out a new life, a life that didn't include all of the trivial things his father cared about. Like money and social status. "Um, honestly, I don't really know what there is to do here." Silas said, still looking out the floor to ceiling window of the sandwich shop. "But I'm sure we could figure something out." he had a feeling those social skills were returning to him, but this time without the arrogance.
He thought for a moment about her offer. Did he really want to go to her motel room? He was sure she didn't mean anything by it, but he wondered if it would turn out awkward for the both of them. "You in the mood for some old fashioned board games and a movie or two?" He asked, smiling. That seemed lighthearted and innocent enough. "Junk food is a good healer, you know." Silas chuckled softly. Companionship was also good for healing, and he certainly wished he had had that when he first left everything behind. It probably would have done him a lot of good.

Erica's ears really perked up when he mentioned bringing by junk food. She'd eaten more than her fair share on occasion, but it was yet another thing that her mother didn't encourage. By the time Erica had gotten older, she'd gotten used to eating granola bars and trail mix for a snack whenever she was hungry. Now she needed more than that; she needed something that could really stick to her bones, something that would taste so good that it would cause to focus less on her loneliness and more on what she had just eaten.
"I think that sounds absolutely wonderful," she said, the smile across her face growing bigger with each passing minute. "I haven't hung out with a friend since.....I can't even remember when....." It made her sad that she couldn't remember. It wasn't as though she was alone when she was growing up. She had plenty of friends. "Thank you so much Silas. I really appreciate this."

Silas could practically see her smile through the phone, and he was glad she seemed so happy to be spending time with him. Even though she probably would have been happy if anyone had offered. He knew how it was, to be alone, but the difference was that he was too stubborn to take up any of the offers he received when he came to Riverside. He was glad Erica wasn't doing that to herself, because it did nothing but harm in the long run. His eyes drifted to his uneaten sandwich that sat on the table in front of him and then to the watch that rested on his wrist. He had little time left on his lunch break, and dreaded going back to work. Back to that dead end job, that was taking him nowhere. He once again wondered what exactly he wanted to do with his life, and came up with nothing.
Silas smiled with his reply. "That's great." He said. "It'll take your mind right off of what is bothering you, at least I hope. Any fattening concoctions you prefer?" He knew there was no real reason for her to thank him, god knew he needed this just about as much as she did right now. He could only stay blind for so long before the complete and utter loneliness hit him. The sad part was, he hadn't even noticed until she came along and showed him what he had been missing. "No need to thank me, Erica. I hate to cut this conversation short, but my break is almost over and I have to get back to work soon." He really didn't want to hang up the phone, but knew he had to. The only thing that made it okay, was the fact that he would be seeing her later.

Erica licked her lips as she thought of the various types of junk food that she had enjoyed in her lifetime. "There are so many different kinds. I can't just pick one. I love chips and pretzels, but I love sweets too. Anything with cream in the middle. You know, like Twinkies and Ho-Hos. Also it's been forever since I've had a double-decker moon pie. Have you ever had one of those before? I swear, it's like....." She paused halfway through her sentence, realizing how silly she sounded. He must think that I'm like a huge pig or something. She cleared her throat when he said that he had to return to work. She was sad that he had to go, but it was for the best. "Oh, that's alright. I really understand. I don't want to get you in trouble or anything. I'll see you later today then. Bye."
After she hung up, she remained stretched out on the bed, continuing her thorough inspection of the ceiling cracks. She wondered what it was that Silas did for a living. It wasn't really important to her; she was just curious. There were all kinds of things about him that she was curious about. Did he like Twinkies too? What was his last name? Did he have any pets? What kind of life was he running away from? How long did it take him to snap out of his isolation? All of the questions seemed so random, but they were necessary. If he was going to be her friend for now, she had to know something about him. She closed her eyes and sighed, counting down the hours until he would arrive to temporarily rescue her from her loneliness.

Silas wanted to chuckle when Erica told him about all of her favorite snacks, and by the sound of it, it looked like there were many many more. Personally, he preferred peanut butter and chocolate. Nutty Bars, Reese's, Butterfingers, and such. But he couldn't deny a good Swiss Roll, either. He tried to memorize the things she told him, just so he would know what to buy when he went to the store later. Silas smiled, glad to have plans with someone for once. "I'll see you later, Erica." He said as they hung up, letting out a content sigh. He finished his sandwich quickly and made his way back to the movie store after disposing of his trash.
Before Silas clocked back in, he sent a text off to Erica. Looking forward to spending time with you. :) He hoped that he wasn't being too forward for her, even if the text was innocent in nature. He was excited for that evening though. He finally found someone he actually wanted to spend time with, and that person seemed to enjoy his company as well. Silas spent the rest of his shift in a daze, going through the motions and counting down the hours until he could leave. When his coworker came in fifteen minutes late, he was beyond antsy to leave the store. He didn't really mind that she was late though, considering she was a single mother. Silas left the store with a smile and a wave, and hastily made his way to his car in the back parking lot. It was nearing six and he still had to go to the store.

Erica was about to drift off into a deep sleep when she heard her text messaging alert go off. The sound worried her at first because she feared that it could have been her mother, Paul, or someone else from her past that wanted to give her some sort of aggravating lecture. She really wasn't in the mood to hear from them. She already spoken to her parents yesterday and let them know that she was alright. Of course that explanation wasn't good enough for her mother. As far as she was concerned, there was no possible way that Erica could be alright without going back to Massachusetts.
Taking a deep breath, she hesitantly picked up her phone and glanced at it, her face softening when she saw who the text was really from. She thought it was really sweet that he had texted her not too long after he had gotten off the phone with her. It reminded her of something that she and her childhood friend Faith used to do. They would talk on the phone for hours and then text each other back and forth and engage in a friendly argument over which one of them missed the other one more. It might have seemed silly to most people, but it made her feel as though she wasn't alone. Right now, she needed that feeling more than ever. Not as much as I'm looking forward to it..... :) After she texted him back, she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, thinking of her new friend Silas and her new life, instead of all the problems and stress of her old life.

Silas stood in the snack isle at the grocery store, his eyes scanning the shelves. His cart was full of snacks for the night, but he couldn't find the one thing he felt he needed to get. He blew out a frustrated breath, walking down the seemingly endless isle. God damn Moon Pies... where the hell are you? Silas probably looked ridiculous, at a grocery store at seven pm, pushing a cart filled with junk food while in his pajamas. His face lit up into a smile when he spotted that trademark moon. Quickly grabbing the box, he threw them into the cart and went to check out. As the cashier rang up his items, he thought about the text he'd received from Erica, and grinned. The girl cleared her throat and read off his total, and Silas swiped his card before shoving it back into the pocket of his black hooded sweatshirt.
Once he was back on the road, he drove to the hotel Erica had told him she was staying at. He had to admit, he was kind of nervous about seeing Erica. Sure, there were no double meaning behind him meeting her at the hotel, and it was purely innocent in nature, but Erica was still a beautiful girl. He just hoped he didn't do anything to offend her. He sent another text telling her that he was on his way, and set his phone back down. After parking his car, he just sat for a few minutes, letting himself calm down a little. He stared at her door from his rear-view mirror, but started to feel like a creep. Getting out, the few bags in hand, he walked to her door and knocked, his fist rapping lightly on the door.
