After a few hours, Erica woke up from her nap, feeling completely refreshed. She was relieved to be so well-rested for her spontaneous junk food pig out night with Silas. She didn't want her evening of bonding with her new friend to be ruined and randomly falling asleep on him would definitely be a surefire way to do it. Glancing at the clock on her cell phone, she realized that her evening would be starting very shortly. In an attempt to make herself look presentable, she quickly took a shower and washed her hair. As she rummaged through her suitcase for something suitable to wear, she recalled yet another one of her mother's lectures about dressing up for company. Was that what she was doing? Dressing up for Silas? She hadn't meant to go overboard. All she was doing was tidying herself up so she didn't look like a person that had just rolled out of bed. I'm not my mother.....I'm not my mother..... She located a blue t-shirt and a pair of old gray warm-up sweats and threw them on, trying yet again to do something that would make her mother mad.
She was in the process of looking for a blow dryer for her hair when she heard a knock at the door. Oh crap, he's here! "Coming!" she called out, abandoning her plans to fix her hair. She wasn't even sure why she was attempting to in the first place. They were just going to spend the evening eating junk food. It was hardly a formal occasion that required her hair to look a certain way. She headed towards the door, deciding to let her hair air dry instead. "Hey Silas," she said, smiling after opening the door and seeing him standing there. "Thanks again for coming by tonight." She moved back a few steps and motioned for him to come in.

Silas stepped inside when she motioned him for him to enter the room, giving her a small grin as he walked by her. "Thanks for inviting me." He said in response. He turned toward one of the tables in the hotel room and sat the bags he held in his hands on top of it. Silas turned slightly and looked at her for a moment, even in a t-shirt and an old pair of sweats she managed to look beautiful, not that he would admit that to her. Well, he wouldn't tell her that because they just met, and this visit was purely friendly visit. "Hey." Silas breathed out, turning back to the table. He reached into one of the bags and fished out the box of moon pies, holding them up in his hand and shaking the box a little. "Look what I found." He said with a small smile. "You wouldn't believe how hard it was for me to find these." He chuckled at his own expense. "It's like the snack isle was some kind of labyrinth or something." He shook his head minutely, a hint of a smile still on his face. "Anyway, where should we start?"

Erica jumped up and down and squealed with delight at the sight of the box of moon pies. "Oh my god! I never thought I'd see one of those again! I could just kiss you right now!" As soon as the words left her mouth, she quickly turned bright red and covered her mouth with her hands. "Sorry about that, I just really love moon pies. You just don't know....." Moon pies were pretty much the only thing that she missed about home. She missed her brother as well, but she believed that he was hanging out in heaven with his girlfriend and always looking down on her with a smile. It was a bit of a stretch, considering how distant their relationship was while he was still alive, but it made her feel good at times. Trying not to focus on Rhett or any other sad aspect of her past, she looked at Silas and the box of moon pies and smiled. "I'm not sure where to begin, but if give me a moon pie, I'm sure we can figure it out."

Silas let out a chuckled at her reaction to the snack he held in his hands. He was glad she was excited as she was, with the effort he put into finding them. She was adorable, and her slip of the tongue just made him smile wider. "It's cool." He offered, shrugging. He held the box out to her, so she could take it from him. He didn't want away, he was more of a nutty bar kind of guy. Her almost childlike glee caused Silas' heart to warm up a little, and he stored the happiness he felt there, as if to use it later when he found himself in need of a happy memory. He didn't really have very many of those left, one's that weren't tainted or forgotten over time. "Eat away." He said, "They're all yours." With a smile, he reached into one of the bags, pulling out the familar tin of wooden blocks. "Ever played Jenga?" He asked, his eyes on the game. It had been ages since he felt like this, so light and full of life.

Erica eagerly ripped the box open, grabbed a handful of moon pies, and stuffed them into the nightstand next to the bed for "safe keeping". It was a habit that had originated in her childhood. Her mother wasn't exactly big on sweets, but occasionally she'd allow Erica and her brother to have some. No matter how large the amount, there just never seemed to be enough for the two of them to split equally, which led to constant fights over who would get the last treat. The only way that Erica could ensure that she'd get enough moon pies would be to hide them in her room. "Are you sure you don't want one?" she asked as she tore open a wrapper. After taking a huge, satisfying bite, her eyes glanced over to the game as well. "I played it once, but it was a pretty long time ago." She laughed and shook her head. "From what I remember, it's not the easiest game in the world."

Silas raised a brow when she placed some of the snacks in her bedside table, wondering why she was doing so. Maybe she had hoarding tendencies, or maybe she just liked snacks in the middle of the night. Who knew, and who was he to judge her for it? Everyone had their odd little quirks, and hers was actually a little cute. Silas chuckled, shaking his head in response to her question. They weren't really his kind of thing. He scrunched up his nose for a second. "Nah, I'll pass, thank you." He said, grinning. "I'm more of a nutty bar kind of guy." Silas shrugged, "It can get pretty complicated. It was my favorite game growing up, I used to play with my mom." They used to have to much fun, each trying to get the other to loose. It was a weekly routine for the pair, they even had a scoreboard up in the house. Every Friday night they would sit down at the coffee table and set up the little wooden blocks, each pulling them out one by one until the tower fell. Sometimes their games lasted for an hour or more.

"Mmmmmmm!" Erica exclaimed with a happy sigh. She finished off the moon pie in just two bites and carefully licked the stray crumbs off of her lips. "Now that's what heaven tastes like." She blushed a little at his reaction to her over the top love of moon pies. Even though she could understand how strange her fixation seemed to other people, it still made her feel a little uneasy. She felt like she did back at the diner in her wedding dress, a weird girl sticking out like a sore thumb and having nowhere to hide. "That's fine then," she said, trying not to dwell on her slight anxiety. She then switched her focus back to the game. "We always played Clue. My father was Professor Plum, my mother was Mrs. Peacock, my brother was Mr. Green, and I was Miss Scarlett." She could still picture her parents in their game playing costumes, her father with his wire-rimmed glasses and her mother with her blue feathered hat. Her parents always had a flair for drama, even offstage.

Silas let out a chuckle at how fast she scarfed down the snack. It made him smile that a simple childhood memory could bring her back and for just one little fleeting moment, she could be back there. It was nostalgic for him, that they were about to play one of his favorite games as a child. "You know," He commented, "There is always that one really unhealthy and fattening food that brings out your inner fat kid. So, when that food is given to you, it's perfectly okay to scarf it down like there's no tomorrow." Silas chuckled, sitting down at the table and clearing a spot for the game. He opened the metal container and flipped it upside-down on the surface, slowing pulling up the tin to reveal the perfectly stacked wooden blocks. He looked at Erica and smiled. "That's really cool. Your parents sound... creative. I bet you had a fun childhood." He pushed his hair out of his eyes. "My dad isn't very fun to be around anymore, after my mom died he threw himself into his work."

Erica's face flushed bright red at the fat kid comment. "Yeah, I guess it's alright to pig out some time," she said, making a quick mental note to cool it on the moon pies for the rest of the evening. Even though he seemed alright with her behavior, she still didn't think that it was a good idea to pig out in front of him. They had just met. She wanted him to get to know Erica the person, not Erica, the closet junk food addict. Her anxiety growing a bit more, she glanced down at the neat stack of blocks. "My parents were in the theater. They were a bit on the dramatic side. It made for a very interesting childhood." Growing up, she actually considered her parents to be upstanding people, better and more superior than the average set of parents. That view had changed considerably over the past months. Upon further reflection, she came to the realization that she had a happy, but strange childhood. She was about to find a way to explain this to him until he mentioned his mother's death, causing her face to fall. "I'm sorry," she said, reaching out her hand and patting his hand sympathetically. No matter how angry she was with her mother right now, she couldn't bear the thought of her dying. "I-I lost my brother a few months ago," she found herself saying.

Silas gave her a smile. "I think it's perfectly fine." He said, shrugging. "Maybe even a little healthy. You cant deny yourself the things you love all of the time, no matter how fattening they may be." He listened as she spoke about her parents. His own mother was a very colorful person, she knew just how to light up a room. When they had company, she used to sit at the piano and play for the guests. Silas used to sit at the top of the stairs, content to just listen to her waft up to him. "Wow. I used to act." He admitted, "I did Broadway, musicals and stuff. It was really fun for a while." He shrugged. He used to love acting, especially because it made his mother proud, even though he knew that anything he did would make her proud of him. But the sight of her smile after a show, he lived for that. It still hurt that he would never see her smile or hear her voice again, but it no longer haunted him... as much. Silas looked down when Erica touched his hand, swallowing. "It was a long time ago, and it wasn't sudden either." He said quietly. He looked back up, forcing a tiny smile on his face. "It never stops hurting, I'll tell you that. But, it does get easier over time. I'm sorry about your brother too."

"Thanks," Erica said, her anxiety starting to slowly melt away. "My mother would beg to differ with you. She used to always lecture us on the proper way to eat in front of people. I've been doing a terrible job so far tonight." Realizing that her hand was still resting on top of his, she moved it away, surprised at the sudden warm feeling that she felt rushing up her spine. "You were on Broadway?" she asked with a gasp. "That's wonderful." It had been her dream, as well as her parents' dream, to be on Broadway someday. Sadly, that dream had come to an end when she was rejected by the Boston Conservatory, her dream school, the only school that she had applied to. She couldn't even bring herself to tell her parents the truth about the rejection because she felt like she had disappointed them, something which she had never done in her life. Rhett was always the one that they were confused about, the tone deaf one that preferred comic books to Shakespeare. "Thanks," she said, her thoughts slowly returning to her brother's death, "I'm glad it's gotten a little easier for you. My brother was sudden, very sudden." She let out a heavy sigh, her mind racked with a depressing combination of grief and guilt. "I guess we should probably start the game now. I'm a little rusty on the rules, so you might have to explain it to me."

Silas gave an amused smile when she mentioned her so called bad etiquette. He didn't think that her seemingly messy eating habits were something to be ashamed about. In fact, who was anyone to judge they way she did things? Maybe Silas just felt that way because he happened to have had a mother who never tried to make him be something he wasn't. "That's alright." He told her, shrugging. "I don't care about your table manners. If you wanna scarf down your favorite snack, who am I to judge?" Silas thought for a moment, he knew all too well what it felt like to have a parent like that. "She sounds like my father, except he tried to make me go law school rather than just encouraging good table manners." He said, chuckling. Silas' time on the broadway circuit was fairly short-lived, but it was fun while it lasted. "Yeah, well, that's what you get when your father has connections. I doubt I would have even had the chance if it weren't for him, ironically. It was only for one summer though, after my senior year. I wouldn't call it much of a compliment." Silas would have been much more proud of himself if he had done it on his own, but he was robbed of that chance when he decided to skip town.
Silas nodded when she suggested that they start the game, a small frown forming. He barely knew Erica, but she still found himself feeling sorry that she lost her brother. He didn't know if they were even close, but he did know that when someone dies in your family, it usually hits everyone pretty hard. Silas was an only childhood, so he wouldn't even know how it felt to loose a brother or sister. "Death isn't easy." He said softly, "To loose someone close to you, especially very suddenly, has got to be really hard. Knowing myself how annoying it is to hear all of the cliche comments about them being in a better place and that everything will be okay, I wont even begin to say those things. I can't promise that the pain will go away, but I can promise that it gets easier, especially when you have someone to help you through it." Silas smiled a warm smile, hoping to make her feel even just a little bit better. If that didn't work, he would distract her with the game.

Erica breathed another heavy sigh. "My mother made me do a lot of things when I was growing up. The table manners were just the tip of the iceberg. I could probably write a tell-all book or something." A part of her regretted that she had gone along with those things and attempted to live up to the image that her mother had created. She wished she had been more like Rhett. He was only sixteen and yet managed to stand up to their mother more times than she could count. Yet sadly, it was the reason why he was no longer alive. She looked over at Silas, her face trying to hide her sadness. “We weren’t that close, my brother Rhett and I. I mean, we had moments sometimes when we got along, but we were so different. I do know for a fact that he’s in a better place now. It doesn’t really bother me if someone says that because I believe that it’s true. I didn’t really have anybody to help me through it. I’m kind of learning to deal with it on my own. Knowing that he’s in a better place does help some though.”
What was wrong with her? This was supposed to be a fun night with the person that she had unofficially designated to be her new best friend. There was certainly nothing fun about her mourning the loss of her brother. She twisted her mouth into a smile in an effort to lighten the mood once again. “So Jenga…you pretty much just stack blocks on top of each other, right? Or is there a lot more to that?”

Silas gave a sad smile. “Writing actually helps, you know. It doesn’t have to be anything in particular. Sometimes, just getting it all out makes huge difference.” He couldn’t believe he was admitting that he wrote, which was something that he hadn’t thought he would ever tell anyone. “My dad started to look down on everything I did after my mom died. He didn’t approve of acting. I think it was because it reminded him of Mom, so I don’t blame him all that much for it. I do blame him for trying to make me something I wasn’t. I could never see myself in law school, it’s ridiculous” When she spoke about her brother, it saddened him a little. “If it helps, I can see how strong you are. I think you’ll be just fine.” Silas offered a reassuring smile. He had always wished he’d had a brother or sister, especially after his mom died. He had always thought that he would have been less lonely if he had someone who would talk to him.
He let out an involuntary laugh at her portrayal of his favorite childhood game. Silas wasn’t making fun of her or anything; it was just funny to him that she had basically no idea how to play the game. He shook his head in answer. “Not quite. They point of the game is to pull blocks out of the stack one by one, until the tower falls. Whoever makes the tower fall is the loser.”

“Really?” Erica asked, raising an eyebrow. “I never considered doing that. Does it really work?” Writing was something that she had never attempted to do in her spare time. She never kept a diary while she was growing up. She had only done the required amount that was necessary for her to get through school. Apart from the various reports and assignments that she had to write, the only important thing she had written in her life was her college entrance essay, which had gotten her nowhere. “My parents never looked down on anything that I did. I always did everything that they wanted me to do. Well, except for running out on my wedding, that was all me,” she said with another laugh. “I guess I’m much stronger than I thought.” She found herself staring at him yet again. It made perfect sense to stare at him; they were having a conversation after all. However, she found herself staring at him when there was no talking at all. “You definitely don’t look like someone who belongs in a boring, stuffy law school,” she muttered. Especially with that smile…..
Shaking herself out of her random daze, she began staring at the blocks. “Oh….you pull them after they're stacked? I see. For some crazy reason, I thought it was like stacking a house of cards or something.” She picked up the tin and examined the picture on the box. “Have you ever tried stacking a house of cards? It’s really complicated. I think I only managed to get two levels up before they all fell down.” Finally understanding the concept of the game, she carefully examined the blocks and pulled one out, examining it carefully so that her eyes wouldn't revert to their newfound habit of staring at him. She took a deep breath and placed it on the top of the pile.
