Erica anxiously walked into the diner, trying to ignore the confused looks on the other customers' faces. She couldn't really blame them for looking surprised; after all, she was more than a little overdressed. It wasn't everyday that a person randomly walked into a diner wearing a white dress, let alone a formal one. Diners were one of those places that her mother had taught to avoid eating in at all costs. She always said that someone with their type of medical coverage didn't deserve to have dinner in a place that could be shut down by the health department within a matter of days. Her mother would have had a fit if she knew that Erica was about to eat in one, which made it all the more appealing.
After trying not to let the staring get to her, she made her way to the counter and sat down, not even bothering to smooth down her dress before doing so. She then flashed a tiny smile to the girl behind the counter and ordered a black coffee. Given the amount of time that she had been driving, she definitely needed it.

It had been a long day for Silas, one spent behind the counter at the movie store. It was a pretty boring job to do and one he really didn't want to be doing in the first place. Even though he didn't enjoy it, it was a job he had to do. No experience didn't get you much of anywhere, and without the connections he had grown used to, finding a job hadn't been an easy task. Silas had worked an extra shift that day, simply because he needed the money and didn't have anything better to do. He sat at the counter, staring at the wall of one of his favorite places to eat in this town, Palmer's Burgers and Fries Diner. It was a rather small joint, but they served awesome food and they served it quick, which is what he preferred.
The bell that rang every time a new customer walked inside chimed, and the restaurant quieted considerably as a girl made her way inside. She looked out of place for this diner, maybe even out of place for the whole damned town. One thing for sure though, she looked like she hadn't had the greatest of days. It reminded him of his first day in Riverside, which had been several months ago now. Silas wondered what had brought her to Riverside in the first place, it wasn't like this town had much to offer. He took his eyes off of her when she sat down, not wanting to make her any more uncomfortable than she already had to be, with all of the staring going on.

Erica flipped through the menu, trying to figure out what exactly to eat. There were way too many possible options. Not only were there about five pages of various sandwiches, there were also a few pages of breakfast foods to choose from. Besides the IHOP in her hometown, she had never heard of a place offering breakfast so late in the day. Of course, there wasn't this large of a selection over at IHOP. It was as though fate knew that she was hungry.
After the waitress placed a steaming hot cup of coffee in front of her, she continued to go through the choices, trying to invent silly excuses for why she should or shouldn't eat each dish. Unfortunately, this got her nowhere. Her stomach rumbled a third time, causing her to decide on closing her eyes and randomly pointing to something to eat. This brilliant plan eventually resulted in her ordering steak and eggs for dinner. Oh well, at least they go with coffee....somewhat.... She glanced around the diner to see what the others were eating, hoping to spot someone who was eating some sort of breakfast food. After a quick glance around the room, her eyes settled on a blonde guy staring at the wall for some reason. She found herself staring at him for at least thirty seconds until her stomach growled yet again, startling her out of her strange trance. I wonder if he likes steak and eggs...... She quickly looked away from the stranger and took a cautious, but much needed sip of hot coffee. She had an entire life to rebuild. She didn't have time to think about nighttime breakfast foods and intriguing blonde strangers. Yet, that didn't stop her from stealing another quick glance at him.

Silas appeared to not be paying attention, but he was, oh yes he was. It wasn't every day that pretty girls came into the diner, at least ones that weren't attached to some guy. He never really minded though. Under the circumstances of his arrival here in Riverside, he never really had time for relationships anyway, nor did he have the patience. That changed the longer he had been here, but her never pursued anything. Why? He didn't know. It probably had something to do with the fact that he didn't know anybody here, still, after all these months.
Out of the corner of his eye, Silas watched the girl struggle with her choice of food. It made him chuckle softly and shake his head when she opted to close her eyes and choose at random. That almost never worked out well. He wasn't surprised though, because she didn't look like she fit in here anyway. By the struggle, it looked like she had never even set foot in a place like Palmer's. Not that the place was sub par, they had great food. He cracked a smile and decided to help her out a little. "They have great waffles here, even though it's a burger place." Silas spoke casually, glancing at the girl. "If you're into breakfast this late in the afternoon, that is." He didn't know what caused him to make contact with the girl, he usually didn't speak to anyone more than necessary. "If not, I like the club sandwiches." He shrugged with his last words, turning his attention to the coffee that sat in front of him.

Erica nearly spilled her coffee at the sound of the blonde stranger's voice. Considering the strange looks that she had gotten, she didn't think that anyone would even care enough to help her. It felt so weird to be a target of ridicule. All throughout her childhood, her mother had passed down her holier-than-thou attitude, causing Erica to believe that she was better than most people. Based on her mother's line of thinking, the people were only staring at her because they were jealous of her pretty dress and wished that they could afford it.
"Thanks," she replied, flashing a polite smile back at him. "I already ordered steak and eggs, but I'll take that into consideration for future reference." In all honesty, she wasn't sure if she'd ever get a chance to eat at this diner again. She had no idea things were going to go. For all she knew, her cousins might not want to reconnect with her. She didn't really have any reason to stay in Riverside if they turned her away. Maybe I should take some waffles and club sandwiches for the road just in case..... As she lifted the coffee to her lips a second time, she thought about exactly where else she could go. The options were extremely limited.

It probably would have been best for Silas to go back to what he was doing before the girl had walked into the diner, but he couldn't find a reason to do so. Maybe he just didn't want to ignore her, or maybe he really was as starved of social contact as some had suggested, but he actually wanted to talk to her. It was strange and unlike him, well unlike the person he had become since he had finally left his father's grasp. When it came to his father, Silas was forced to be someone he was not. His father had expectations that he couldn't, wouldn't live up to. That life was a shallow one at best. He looked up from his coffee, which had gone untouched since it had been sat in front of him and glanced at the girl who sat next to him. He couldn't help but wonder what exactly brought her to Riverside. Was she just passing through? She kind of had that hopeless look about her, much like the one he had worn his first few weeks here.
Silas cleared his throat, and decided to take a chance and strike up a conversation with her. "I'm sorry," He said with a small chuckle, "Don't mean to put you on the spot, but why are you dressed like that?" He had been curious about that small fact since she had walked in. It wasn't often someone came into the diner so dressed up. Many of the customers came in pajamas-like attire, Palmer's was kind of that place. The one where you could find pregnant women at late at night because they were craving some kind of greasy concoction. The retro feel and people who worked there knew just how to make you feel like you belonged. That didn't seem to be true for the girl, though. Silas decided he would at least try to distract her from the others who were being rude, whispering about her.

Erica wasn't the least bit surprised at his question. She figured that someone would ask her about her formal choice of attire sooner or later. Ordinarily, she would have avoided the question. She probably would have told him to mind his own business in her normally snooty tone of voice and then would have made a huge production of stomping across the diner to sit somewhere else. She would have regarded him as just a simple townie, a person that didn't deserve to hear about her private affairs.
That was the old Erica. The new Erica.....well she was still a work in progress. However, she knew that if she was going to wind up staying in Riverside, she'd have to start being nice to the locals. Plus, this stranger had been kind enough to help her. The very least she could do was be kind in return. "Well," she said, still smiling politely at him. "I'm dressed like this for my wedding." She knew that she sounded ridiculous, but there was no other way that she could explain the situation. It was what it was. She wondered if he would stomp off and sit somewhere else. It would serve her right for her past behavior.

Silas raised his brow at her reply, utterly confused as to why she would be a place like this, hell be in Riverside even, on her wedding day. The only people that were here willingly were those who had ties to those who lived here and couldn't bear to leave. He was sure many couldn't wait to leave the small town, so why she was here, in Palmer's that is, was beyond him. He almost didn't want to ask anything beyond his former question, for fear of offending her but his curiosity was piked. "Wedding?" He asked, "I'm sure that's a long story if you are here instead of in a church or something." Maybe that was why everyone was staring at her, because they knew her and had been wondering all along what he was wondering right now. He was sure he would have heard something about it before now though, if she was marrying someone here, considering everyone was connected somehow in Riverside.
Silas' attention was removed from the girl next to him for a moment when a waitress came and placed a sandwich in front of his with a cheeky smile. He offered her thanks and popped a french fry into his mouth and turned his head toward the virtual stranger next to him, focusing his blue eyes back on her. "I know I wouldn't want to be here on my wedding day." He joked, hoping he didn't upset or anger her with his words.

Erica laughed at the confused look on his face. She couldn't blame him; she would have probably reacted the same way if someone had said that to her. "Yeah, you're right," she said, as the waitress placed a steaming hot plate of steak and eggs in front of her. "It's a very long story." She couldn't just simply say that she ran away from her own wedding. It would make her seem very unsympathetic. She had to explain why she was running. In order to do that, she would have to basically tell him her entire life story. He didn't appear to be in a hurry, but she doubted he had that much time on his hands.
After politely thanking the waitress, she bathed her food in ketchup and took a few bites of it, relieved at how good it tasted. At least I'm not wasting my money on this.... "My wedding day was actually a few days ago. I guess you can say that I'm on my honeymoon right now." She glanced around the retro themed diner and laughed again. Paul wouldn't be caught dead in a place like this.... "Actually this place isn't so bad. I wouldn't have minded spending my wedding here."

Silas smiled when she laughed, and it was involuntary, which surprised to him to no end. Had he gotten enough sleep last night? He was utterly confused as to why he would smile over something as simple as a stranger's laugh, especially one who he had no really business even talking to in the first place. Who was he kidding, she was supposed to be married. He shrugged, picking up his sandwich to take a bite out of it. He closed his eyes and let out a groan when the flavors hit his taste buds. Silas could eat at Palmer's daily and he wouldn't ever get tired of it. He would, though, most likely get pretty fat. He nodded when the girl replied to his comment. "Yeah, Palmer's is pretty cool." He said, looking at her again. "If you're supposed to be honeymooning, why are you alone?" He asked. He didn't really stop to think about how rude his question was, or even the fact that it wasn't his business in the slightest. Silas was just asking out of pure curiosity. He was kind of rusty in the social department, from his many months avoiding people. "I don't know if I'd want to have a wedding here though." He said, "Those things are supposed to special, you know? I would understand if it had some sentimental value, but I think it would be a little tacky to those who didn't understand." He looked down at his plate after his ramble, opting to shut his mouth for a second instead of making a fool out of himself. "Anyway, what brings you to Riverside?" He asked her, once again raising his eyes from his plate.

Erica shoved a few more forkfuls of steak and eggs in her mouth as his question began to fully sink in. "Why are you alone?" She had been driving across the country by herself for the past few days, yet it hadn't really dawned that she was very much alone. Her brother was dead and practically everyone else back home was dead to her as well. Sure, she had her mother's cousins, but given the way she and her mother had treated them in the past, her relationship with them was probably dead too. She had nobody, absolutely nobody. "I'm alone," she said finally, forcing a tiny smile. "I'm alone because I decided to start my life over. Although I guess I shouldn't call it a honeymoon since I decided to leave the groom behind." She let out a heavy sigh and took another sip of coffee. "You're right though. Weddings are supposed to be special. They're supposed to be very special things that require months of planning and heavy decision making. Usually, those plans and decisions are made by the bride and the groom together." Not by the bride's parents, the groom's parents, and everyone else under the sun, but the bride..... She put down her cup and smiled at him. "I'm here to reconnect with my cousins," she said, relieved to actually have a straightforward answer to one of his questions.

Silas' eyes widened as she spoke. It was almost utterly insane how similar his life had been just a few months ago. He had too come here in search of something new, better even than his old life. It had been filled with useless expectations. He didn't want to live his father's lonely life. He didn't want to end up alone like him, with no real friends, and family who hated him. Life was supposed to be lived surrounded by love, and it had been a long time since Silas had been given that privileged. Maybe it was time for him to again open up his life to those around him. It was easier said than done, but he was willing to try. "I know how hard that can be." He said, looking down at his plate for a moment. He took a bite of his sandwich, and ate a few fry's as she spoke. He processed the information in his head, again so confused about the things the girl was saying. She ran away from her wedding? Given that she didn't even seen to want to get married to the man, it actually wasn't all that surprising. "Sucks for him." He said with a smile and small chuckle, looking at her again. "I was in your place a few months ago," Silas said. "Running from a life I didn't want."

Erica's smile began to spread even further across her face. "Yeah, I guess it does suck for him, does it?" Her mother certainly didn't see it that way. She saw it as Erica's loss. To her mother, Erica was the one missing out on the chance to be married to Paul. Erica was the one who didn't get to live in a big fancy house with a tennis court, a swimming pool, and a stable out back. Erica was crazy for walking out on a charmed lifestyle and she would probably regret it for the rest of her life. However, her mother was wrong. She didn't regret leaving Paul for a second. The only thing she did regret was that she hadn't left him sooner. Her face lit up at the stranger's kind words Finally! Someone gets it! That's exactly what she was doing: running from a life that she didn't want. After finishing off her steak and eggs, she looked him straight in the eye and asked, "So, is the life you have now the one that you want?" She could definitely use some words of wisdom before she got back on the road.

Silas was glad he could put a smile on the strangers face, especially under what seemed to be unpleasant circumstances. He simply nodded minutely and gave her a smile when she repeated his statement back to him in question form. With her next question, though, he had to stop and think for a moment. Was this the life he wanted for himself? Did he really see himself working at a movie store in five years? The answer was no, this wasn't what he wanted out of his life, but upon arriving at Riverside, he hadn't had much of a choice. When he walked out on his father and his arrogant way of life, he had also walked away from the money and an ivy league education. He didn't know if acting still called to him because it had been so long since he had set foot on a stage. Truth was, he wasn't even sure what he wanted to do anymore, all he knew was that the movie store wasn't cutting it. He didn't want the tacky light blue and yellow walls to be all he saw for the rest of his life. "Honesty," Silas replied, "If I were to be completely honest with myself, I would say absolutely not. Is it sad to say that I have no idea what I want to do anymore?" He looked at the patterned diner wall before looking back at the girl, and shrugged. "I just hope life leads me somewhere worth while."

Erica immediately shook her head. "No it's not sad at all," she said softly. "Believe me, I know exactly what you're talking about. My whole life was pretty much planned out for me. I already knew what was expected of me and what I thought that I wanted to do. But then one day, this light bulb went off and I realized that there was a whole other world out there, one that I hadn't really explored quite yet. Hopefully, I'll find whatever it is I think I'm looking for. If not then....." I'll crawl back home like a little lost puppy and give up all my freedom and independence? She shuddered at the thought. That was one of the last things she wanted to do. As she pondered over her other options, she fished out a few bills from her purse to pay the check that the waitress had just placed in front of her. Once it was paid, she rose from her seat and smiled at him again. "I better get on the road now. I haven't even started exploring yet. Take care of yourself. I really do hope you find what you're looking for."
